New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Oscar de la Renta

Feb 4 2008 - 1:58pm

As always, Oscar was all sophistication and elegance. The models trotted out to a live performance by Regina Spektor [1], who crooned and played a grand piano in the background. Full taffeta and tulle skirts swished by, ornately embellished — all with grandeur.

At times, the checkerboard tweed overcoats, shimmering skirt suits, and vivid silks were so beautiful I found myself subconsciously holding my breath. Fuzzy fur toques, beaded shearling vests, and rich jewel colors hinted at a Russian influence. Oodles of dresses for all occasions, Oscar's specialty, were present: day, cocktail, and gown. They all had one thing in common — the appearance of decadence. Ultimately, that's what Oscar is all about . . . a classic decadence.
