PETA announced today that Aretha Franklin is "queen" of their annual worst-dressed list.
The online poll, which scolds those who "drape themselves" in fur, leather, and exotic skins, also named Lindsay Lohan, Eva Longoria, Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, and Marilyn Manson as top offenders.
Here's what PETA had to say about Aretha and the runners-up — do you agree?
- Aretha Franklin: How 'bout some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for animals? Aretha, when you waddled into the Grammys in yet another vulgar fur, you looked as if you were going to perform "I Am the Walrus" by the Beatles. You might be a queen, but you don't know jack about compassion.
- Marilyn Manson: Always draped in leather from head to toe, Manson has enough skeletons in his closet to fill a pet cemetery. As if wearing dead animals isn't foul enough, Manson says that he wears his cow-skin pants 24/7— only peeling the smelly things off to have sex. That alone should be enough to tarnish leather's dated sex appeal. Manson might only be the shock rocker's stage name, but his wardrobe is a real-life tale of blood and guts.
- Eva Longoria: Eva Longoria is short on compassion. In her trashy furs, she looks like the streetwalker of Wisteria Lane. Eva is one "desperate housewife" in need of a quickie divorce — from her stylist.
- Lindsay Lohan: I Know Who Killed Me isn't just the title of Lindsay Lohan's latest bomb, it's the cry of the animals snuffed out so that this "mean girl" can pose in their pelts. Lindsay, there's no road to recovery for the foxes who are anally electrocuted so that you can look skanky.
- Kate Moss: Nothing completes the transition from supermodel to super tramp like a fur coat. If Kate could see clearly through those bleary eyes, maybe she’d clear her closet of those furs.
- Kylie Minogue: What does Kylie Minogue have in common with her python purse? They are both cold blooded. Come on Kylie, it's not cool to clutch an accessory made by nailing snakes to a tree and skinning them alive.

Geeze. Peta is way HARSH. But I like what they said about Eva Longoria.
haha
1Aretha always makes me cringe!
2Sorry if this offends anyone, but PETA really annoys me to no end. Yes, I love leather and will continue to have accessories in its particularly buttery versions. I also eat beef and chicken and seafood and sometimes pork. I think it's kind of ridiculous to expect everyone to become vegan and not eat meat or use leather-which has been used for what seems like forever. I understand fur (I'm not a big fan of unneccessarily killing little animals for nothing other than their fur) but if somebody is going to eat a cow, I'm not going to feel super bad for putting my things in one.
3I couldn't agree more bcastaneda, that's my philosophy. I eat my fair share of meat so I don't feel guilty wearing leather. Fur however is a different story, I don't wear it.
4how anyone can wear fur and not feel any guilt at all is just beyond me.
5i think just the idea of "putting your things in a dead cow" should put you off lol.
6Peta just goes overboard to really get attention. and obviously it's working. Fur is gross, and i think you're pretty gross is you are buying and wearing fur.
I kinda gotta agree with Bcastaneda!
Although a lot of my friends are vegan or vegetarian (which I pretty much think is just a "cool fad" anyways) I think people should have the right to eat and dress as they please. Personally, I have no problem eating meat as long as I know the animals were treated fairly through their life. I mean, I'm sure the gators don't care how their prey feels. I also have an occasional leather item, but if I can get a version that isn't real leather, I'm gonna go for it! I feel like if we can all make some SMALL contributions then it leads to a better world. But no one should be forced to or be called a bad person for it!
Besides, no one can really be vegan! I mean come on, even photography film (hello peta photographers) are made from gelatin- ie, they come from cow hooves!!!!!
7PETA killed over 97 percent of the animals in its care in 2006.
I have no respect for them.
8I'm a vegetarian even and I wouldn't associate with PETA, they need to find a new approach to their campaign.. Ridiculous, they are acting like school kids
9I hate PETA. I agree, they definitely act like bullying school kids. Why don't they just talk about good, positive things instead of just name calling and offending people?
10I don't appreciate them projecting THEIR misguided views on others.
They may choose not to wear leather or fur, but don't disprespect those of us who do. We're entitled to our choice, too.
Also, aside from diet and the fashion industry, animals are used in laboratories in the medical field. Hasn't every PETA member (or their family members) benefited from modern medicine such immunizations, medications, etc? Unless PETA exempt themselves from modern medicine (which I highly doubt), they need to shut the hell up about animal rights, as they're hypocrites. They're creating a
11market for animal suffering as much as we are.
Bbkf - Source? I'd be interested in finding more out about that, if you have the link anywhere.
12yeah, being catty and rude is not a way to get people interested in your cause. i don't like fur, but no way i'd align myself with peta.
13I am on the fence with this one...
14I'm not too shocked Manson's part of the fur-wearing clique.
15p.s. this website looks like where the 97% statistic came from. i do have to say, the form letter they have posted from PETA on there is pretty damning.

20I don't know how I feel about PETA, I'm just putting it this out there:
http://www.animalrightsmalta.com/killsanimals.html
I don't know the facts, but it looks like the organization who established the peta kills animals website has an ulterior motive.
I also think it's ridiculous to call veganism and vegetarianism a fad. And just because humans have eaten meat for years, doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do. One of the things that differentiates humans from other animals is morality--which you can disagree with if you want, but while I think it is morally wrong for a human to kill, it's not morally wrong for a wild animal to kill. I'm sure a crocodile never experiences guilt, but I'd be skeptical if someone here denied they've never felt guilty over something. There are feelings that humans have that animals don't, but one thing we share is the ability to feel pain. I definitely don't agree with PETA on everything (they'd probably disagree with that last paragraph because it's speciest) and I've bought leather shoes in a moment of weakness and sometimes I eat cheese at a party, but the meat, leather, and fur industries are NOT pretty. The more I learn about them, the more horrified I become.
21I think that PETA may have a good cause, but the way they work is not OK. Everyone have the right to wear anything, they can't humiliate the celebrities that use leather or fur...
22And I think that this thing of "Don't wear fur" is relative. Wear fur is bad when you kill an animal only for it and by cruel ways. But when animals are killed in a more "acceptable" way (yeah, I know that's difficult, but they don't need to torture the animals) and people utilize their meat, their fur and everything else, It's not a big thing!
People are horrified by the industry of fur by the way they treat the animals, not by the murder itself. If they give to the animals good treatment when alive and when they'll need to kill them, use painless and quickly ways, I think the society will accept the use of fur.
javsmav, you took the words out of my mouth! How could anyone argue that being vegan is a fad? it's something so personal and it's not exactly a decision that can be made instaneously, not liking buying the "It" bag. It takes a lot of careful lifestyle planning and consideration, especially if you have a significant other, and discussion of ramifications and sacrifices of being a vegan. It's not easy, which is why the people who are are truly dedicated; they're the least likely people to follow "fads" and just give it up when it becomes "so last year."
Also, it's hardly fair to say vegans shouldn't take advantage of modern medicine. The use of animals in labs are highly regulated. I come from a family and close knit group of scientific researchers and when they use mice for spinal cord injury, they treat them extremely well (maybe not for ethical reasons, but because laboratory animals are very, very expensive...nonetheless, the motive doesn't affect the end result). And speaking for myself, at least, I'm not against eating animals per se. Maybe it's the natural order of things, part of the food chain, part of evolution, I'm not a biologist. But what I am against is the treatment of animals in the procurement of meat. The cruelty exhibited against a purportedly "lesser species" is inhumane and along with health reasons that it's just better for your body to stick with plant sources for nutrition (See "The China Study"), that is why I'm a vegan. If one day, the meat industry can treat animals like they're not worthless, maybe I won't be so against eating meat. I would still personally never eat meat and it doesn't really taste that great either, but that's just a personal choice.
23Eat me PETA. EATTTTT ME!--Sorry, that was rude.
If it's already made and it's already there and it's affordable, I'm gunna buy-it, wear-it, and eat-it.
Animals were put on Earth to serve us, NOTT to be miss treated, but to serve us. Putting humans on the same level as Animals is kind of insulting to man kind!
Oh, and I don't like people or organizations that take stands by being rude. We need to start treating each other right before we trickle the favor down.

25"Aretha, when you waddled into the Grammys in yet another vulgar fur, you looked as if you were going to perform "I Am the Walrus" by the Beatles."
I'm sorry but...oh my god. That's hilarious. I feel bad for her, but still...
26I don't wear fur, or leather, but I do eat meat. We need to eat, but we don't need to wear animals to look good. And I know vegetarians get their protein somehow, but it must be hard without meat.
I would never, ever wear fur. I used to have a leather jacket, but I don't wear it anymore. I decided it was just as wrong as wearing fur.
I agree though with all the PETA statements made above. They might be a little harsh, but they're all true.
They are ridiculous....these comments are something that a 12 year old would create to get some attention, PETA has a pretty trashy campaign and I hope they shut the f*ck up before they really get in to trouble...or they could just keep talking, start to collect lawsuits and then shut the doors for sure!
27=D
javsmav and pandacn, I agree with you totally! I'm sorry but if you become a vegan or veggie for "fad" reasons then that's just ridiculous! I have been a vegetarian for 9 years and I became one because of MY BELIEFS and MORALS, not because someone said it was cool.
28I don't agree with PETA on anything, but I would never wear fur. There is just entirely too much cruelty involved with that industry.
29I agree that not all vegans and vegetarians are following a fad, but you have to admit there has been a boom (even if for a good reason) in veganism. Maybe it has something to do my living in new york, but all I see are these moronic people calling themselves vegans but not actually knowing what it means. I mean, with books like "Skinny b*tch", you can't deny it. Again, not all are doing it for fashionable reasons. Some have good intentions. It's like this boom in interest in our environment. I've been an environmentalist for years and I'm glad to see people actually caring to make small changes, and it's good when you see the industry slightly changing it's ways. I only hope people will keep on that track and it won't be forgotten in a year.
And there are local farms that treat animals properly. That's where I buy my meat from. I think as long as they are treated with care, then it's ok for my to eat it. I respect Vegetarians with good hearts but Peta gives you a bad rap. Besides, there have been articles about Peta killing the animals you see in those videos on their websites. For them to treat animals badly just to prove their point is ridiculous.
30Animal testing in the medical field can be VERY cruel as well. I don't see PETA going after the biomedical and medical industries. Oh wait, PETA members benefit from modern medicine, so that's okay.
When Pamela Anderson contracted hepatitus, did she seek treatment from a herbalist or a M.D.??
PETA is NOT about animal rights. They're just bullies.
31I eat meat as is sanctioned in the bible, where God clothed Adam and Eve in fur when he kicked them out of Eden. Got a problem with people eating meat and wearing fur PETA? Take it up with God.
32PETA sucks! If people want to wear fur, so be it! It's their decision. They're rude and invasive. I honestly love wearing fur. Well, they belong to my mom, but still. Also, there's nothing more comfortable and warm like a shatoosh scarf for winter. PETA, kiss my a**!
33Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food."
Also a true story.
34PETA isn't my cup of tea. i don't wear fur, try not to wear or use products with leather or other animal testing involved. and i give my money to people who i know will use it to really help animals, like my local humane society or aspca.
scare tactics and humiliation turn me off. even if everything they were doing was 100% cruelty free, i don't agree with forcing people to change. people will see the light when they want to, and forcing bloody pictures in children and adult's faces only detracts from a good cause.
i don't believe i can take away people's personal decisions. i can only educate and hope people do what they believe is right. i think PETA tries to take away people's right to choose by how they portray animal rights activists and how they treat humans.
35iRose: so obviously god created us to not eat meat and eating meat is a symbol of our sin. Every time you eat that hamburger you are taking a bite of the forbidden fruit. Why wouldn't you want to go back to the way god wanted you to live? There are also a lot of things in the old testament that Christians don't do anymore, because Jesus' death brought new life.
**that's just my argument for Christians who think it's their god-given right to eat meat (I was probably the lone vegetarian at my small Christian college). If you want to eat meat, fine, but don't say it's because god wants you too.
36with God involved or not, for the science, we are what we are today because of the meat. Let me explain: millions of years ago, our ancestors developed their brain capacity by eating the proteins in the meat! Without meat, I don't say we would be like monkeys now, but our development would be slowly.
37This is hilarious. If you're going to commit the ultimate fashion crime - supporting the skinning (ALIVE), electrocuting, beating, mistreating, and torture of cats, dogs, raccoons, minks, rabbits, and foxes - you really have no right to complain that people have something to say about it. ONLY BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS AND UGLY PEOPLE WEAR FUR.
38awareness is a beautiful and powerful thing, if done in the right manner. educated people intellectually, making someone like me think twice about the things I eat and wear, is much more effective, then the impression I'm left with...PETA a hostile juvenile approach to a beautiful cause...If people have morals and animals don't, then why does PETA treat people like animals?
39I'm a vegetarian (for health reasons), and PETA repulses me. Why is there such an outcry about fur (which I agree is a horrible industry. Again, I have a problem with the industry, not the actual wearing of fur, but I would never say anything to somone wearing fur). What I DO have a problem with is clothing made in sweatshops (dealing with this issue is a lot harder than just not wearing leather). I wonder if PETA people even take this into consideration. What ever happened to caring about human rights?
40NEWS FLASH: animals that are used for livestock are treated just as cruelly, AND if you ever saw what happens in a slaughter house they dont skin the cows and neatly place their skins in boxes and ship them off to chanel. Leather is not a by product and neither is fur. I hate when people make a distiction between the two. Face it, fur is just a more graphic, visual indication that this was an animal as opposed to a green leather jacket for example.
41PETA's tactics really disgust me. And yes, why don't we approach human sweatshops with the same vigor ??
I hate fur, but when will PETA realise that they will never stop everyone from wearing fur. It just won't happen.
42@ Mister- Uh, PETA is an ANIMAL rights organization. Sweatshops are not their AOR. And who said you can ONLY care about humans? Do you also think we should give up other causes, like the environment?
43@ Lola, what a lovely attitude to have about a cause you support. Thank goodness you weren't around during the civil rights struggle; you wouldn't have been much help, I'm afraid.
FYI meat eating (particularly eating *cooked* meat) has, through evolution, become a very necessary part of our survival and health- our bones and teeth have evolved and adapted to eating cooked meat and food. Not to say that you can't be healthy without eating meat (you most certainly can) but it also goes to say that it's kind of ridiculous to claim that meat is unhealthy or that everyone should stop eating it.
And you know, I'm not even the biggest meat eater, I just don't appreciate when people are very adamant about how I live my life when it doesn't really effect them personally. Also I buy organic meat a lot (DELICIOUS) since I go to Fairway, so I guess it helps my conscience, but to be completely honest I really don't think about it.
Oh well. I think I'm going to go get a hamburger.
44Nah, meat's not unhealthy... that's why the first thing recommended to cancer patients or other people with serious illnesses much of the time is to pursue a veggie diet. It's also so healthy that it's been linked to miscarriage and clogged arteries.
45There's a way to eat meat in a safe way (small amounts), but most people don't do that. Most people scarf it down. Eat meat if you want to (what a cute hamburger quip you have there. Mature), but there's just no denying that a veggie diet is ideal for health, nature, and animals alike.
PETA - get a life you freaking losers. How about HUMANS as a crusade and not some stupid animal? You are wasting your time. We will always eat and wear animals. Direct you hard work for a good cause like working for HUMAN rights and the sick political culture we are living in. Our country is falling apart and YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT ARETHA IS WEARING?
46Riiiggghhht, PETA, because making fun of Aretha Franklin's *weigh* is SO compassionate. Or are they saying that the only people who deserve compassion are people like them??
47AK, if you are the type of person who pays to have animals needlessly tortured and abused, you are an EFFED UP PERSON, and *no,* you do NOT deserve to be treated nicely.
48I don't have a problem with Fur but what I do have a problem with is how Tacky PETA is. People have the right to make choices good and bad but it's not their responsibility to attack people's personal lives or exploit. Instead garnering more attention to the celebrities why not send a letter and encourage those to educate themselves. In all honesty the point gets tuned out and all one focuses on the celebrity and not the cause
49Ugh, PETA is over the top. I'm a vegetarian and I love animals, rescuing and fostering out of my own pocket, but PETA really doesn't get it. There actions are far too extreme - yes, pointing out trashy fur wearing celebs is definitely not their worst deed, but when they go and purposely stain furs, well that's just dumb - the person wearing the fur will just get a new one and the stained fur will go in a landfill making that death even more cruel than it was to begin with.
And to whoever said that we've been eating meat forever and its the right thing - wow, you are horribly misled. We actually originated from herbivores, just look at our teeth structure. Our teeth are made for grinding, not ripping. Compare our canines to a dog or cat - we weren't designed to go out, capture an animal and rip flesh. Technology has allowed us to hunt animals. While I don't mean to make anyone a vegetarian (its a personal choice, even when I have kids I'm going to raise them to eat both and they can make the choice), but I just hate when people get their facts wrong and say we're designed to eat meat because originally we were not.
