Just like with Ellen Pompeo and her SAG Awards gown, for Marion Cotillard and her Oscars gown, it was love at first sight. "I've worked with him several times," she said of Jean Paul Gaultier, who designed her fishtailed frock. "When I saw this dress from his last collection, I knew I wanted to wear it."

Her white and silver mermaid gown was based on a similar dress from Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2008 couture collection — except that one was black and gold. So I'm asking you to step back, and imagine: Do you like Marion's dress as she wore it, or do you wish she would have worn the black and gold runway version? I'm having trouble deciding which I would have preferred . . .

I like the white version much better. She's FAB!
I like the white better, too.
I prefer the black and gold. It looks less fish like.
Ditto. The white is more youthful.
Black and gold. It's more evening and less bride
I don't really like either, but I guess I prefer the white.
I think the black and gold is beautiful but I like the white for the Oscars because it wasnt safe and it made it really pop. Okay now I'm really in love with dress.
i love the white she looked perfect at the Oscar's, my favorite dress !
Black and gold. Seems to show more DETAIL.
Black and Gold.
white one is better by far!
i think the white is much prettier.
I love them both!
I immediately loved the white when I saw it on the red carpet... but something wasn't quite right... it had something to do with the texture of the dress visually, or lack thereof. Seeing the gold dress, I adore it! The way the cut of the bodice is more visible gives me what I was missing. With the white and blue dress the contrast wasn't strong enough. However, the white is certaintly more goddess-like. And I adore Marion Cotillard! While I was certain that Cate would win best actress, I've never been happier to be wrong. She is so adorable!
I love them both, but I think the black and gold is, as syako said, less bride-like.
The black and gold really looks gorgeous in photographs... "they" said the white was much prettier in person than the camera shows. She totally looked amazing and it suited her personality so well. I would have chosen the black and gold version myself but I don't think you can go wrong with either.
beautiful!
tough choice but i think the black and gold would have been better.....
i loved the white one it's more stunning and more FAP it looks alike a beautiful bride-fish amazing one....
I prefet the white on her, it was my favorite dress of the night.
I prefer the black and gold. She could have done a smoky eye and a nude lip and looked amazing. I wasn't a fan of the white.
white looks much better against the red carpet...makes her stand out!
the white is pretty, but it definitely makes her look like a fish.
The white/gold is stunning. I saw La Vie en Rose before I knew who she was - what a shock! Marion is STUNNING! (And Edith Piaf is, well, not, what a remarkable transformation!) The dress was the funkiest, styliest part of the Oscars. Perfection.
The white looks better I think, because it enhances her sweet personality. The black and gold one is more like whoa, watch out. But still good. Would look good on somebody like Gisele Bundchen or Naomi Campbell.
The white!!!! She was stunning!
white white white. white for spring! the black and gold dress will age her!
the white one without a doubt - the black and gold one actually looks like a fishnet - the white one looks so much more chic and beautiful, especially on the lovely Marion Cotillard...
that dress is ugly
the white!
i like the white better. the pattern looks more like fish scales than does the black and gold. and, the black and gold looks a little bit too similar to leopard print. Plus, i think the black and gold would have blended with her dark hair.
I like the black and gold white one a lot but Marion's coloring wouldn't go with it, it's too warm. She looks good in the white one, it's icy which goes with her cool tones. It's better that she went with the white one.
I think the white is better.
I think I prefer Marion's version better
Marion looks amazing, she was definitively best dressed at the Oscars. I prefer the white version much more!
Black and gold is better.
The white one makes her boobs look like they're a little saggy.
I like the white option better.
I'm with you, both look great!
I think with her coloring, she picked well, the white looks best for her. However I do love the black and gold one, too! This was the best dress at the Oscars IMO.
I love both!
This dress just looks so much prettier when the camera zooms in.
I love Marion's dress.
I prefer the black and gold because it has more contrast and depth. But I think the white would have been nicer if it had more of a contrasting color to it.
Or what would have really been great, is if it had been peacock blue/green and gold - the "scales" to me are reminiscent of peacock feathers. Although maybe it would have been too loud...
WHITE = LOVE
Gaultier's mermaid dress is absolutely stunning! Like especially the gold / black for it create different levels of shades on waist / hemp. The "flower" pattern details on breasts gave a cute feminine touch too!
