The Spring/Summer ad campaigns have arrived in the new issues of all our favorite fashion bibles and I wanna talk about them! I grew up drooling over fashion through memorable and provocative ads. Some fashion brands can be quickly identified by their famous ads, for example, Versace, Kenneth Cole, Gucci and Diesel. My 'Fab Ads' will serve as a round table to discuss the effectiveness, beauty and selling power of our favorite, and not so favorite, fashion advertisements.
To kick this off, here is the Spring/Summer '07 campaign for Italian denim pioneer Diesel.
While Diesel is known for showing their clothes through sexual messages, this season they decided to take the social commentary angle. Shot by Terry Richardson, the ads feature everyday scenes that have been drastically altered due to rising temperatures and seas. Global Warming is a hot topic right now and Diesel's aim was to take the serious issue and put it into the surreal world of premium denim. In this ad, parrots have replaced the pigeons of Venice's St. Mark's Square - signifying a world that's been turned upside down.
What do you all think of Diesel's socially aware advertising approach?

Vero Moda
Moncler
Love the parrots. No it doesn't make me think of global warming. Maybe they should have put drowning polar bears in there instead if that's their message. Shut up and sell clothes.
1I like your idea for this new feature, fab. I would never have thought that this had to do with global warming, and since parrots are attractive, they are kind of making climate change look like a good thing-which it is not. But if i had reckognized that as St. Marks, which i did not since i was just looking at the clothes, i would have just thought that the man brought the parrots or something! (yes i am a blonde) I
2You know what would have been more effective was if they were standing in the middle of a melting iceberg
3i love my diesel jeans!!
4Wow, I thought this was just an ad trying to be cool. Global Warming? My buds in Texas and Arizona are experiencing the opposite! I can't wait until they go back to predicting an ice age like they did a mere 30 years ago and this loses hype just like the ozone layer freakout fest they had. Then we can move on to new causes du jour, like space pollution. I can't wait to see those advocates!
5Miami- actually one of the affects along with warming of the earth is extreme weather of all types including snow and the super cold unusual weather we have been having
6Jess, I understand that. I actually took a course in this out of interest, not to mention some during my younger years in college. I refuse to believe most of the hype though. The scientific community is not in agreement and until all the facts are on the table, I refuse to believe this is all just man made. Our weather is very cyclical by nature. A lot of this is about the money. My company works in conjuction with NOAA and many of the weather scientists there, where we allow them to occupy labs on our ships. I have had the opportunity to meet some pretty interesting folks in the scientific community as a result, including famed vetenarians that do those shows on animals in Antartica, the Gallapogos islands, as well as some of the top folks in the hurricane center. I derive my opinion from these folks and the pure scientific journals I read, not some advocates trying to raise money for the latest cause du jour. And a lot of it is all about the money.
7"actually one of the affects along with warming of the earth is extreme weather of all types including snow and the super cold unusual weather we have been having"
That's convenient. Global warming incorporates both hot AND cold so pretty much anything, any kind of record set, can be attributed to it! Nice!
What ever happened to El Nino? It used to be blamed for everything.
8To me it just look gorgeous, I love the color of the parrots, very tropical meets the city... pretty to the eye
9Guess Diesel missed the mark in St. Marks.
10LOL, JessNess I totally agree. When I first looked at this picture the first thing that came to mind was NOT global warming. When they run this ad in magazines they need to put a little explanation in the corner or something.
11I would have NEVER guessed parrots=global warming. Pretty birdies, though.
12I want the pants in this picture! Does anybody know what they are called?
13The only thinking I did about this ad was "Wtf do parrots have to do with jeans?"
**~~Everyone who's anyone has been on sesame street.~~**
14it doesn't make me think of global warming. it just looks like something pretty and slightly surreal.
what denim has to do with the environment I really don't know...
15MBM
16"OMG there are those high waisted jeans again" That's what I thought.
MBM
17Global warming...whaaat? If you told me there was an issue & what is it, I'd guess..maybe about loss of habitat??
I love it, basically because I own a Macaw and she is the light of my life. It doesnt make me think about global warming, just makes me wish I could have a flock of Macaws around me so I could play with them.
18I should add to my above comment that I hope those girls watched their toes if that is not a photoshop! Those Macaws love to chase feet if they are not well trained.
Jessness....extreme weather(wet and cold in the west and warmer dryer in the East) is also an effect of an El Nino which they can definatly prove is occuring right now. It worries me for next hurricane season (live in the Florida Keys)
19Beegirl, if you don't answer here, I'll shoot you a note. My family is from the Keys for generations! I was just there New Year's Eve. Summerland Key used to be owned by my grandfather. Very cool.
20I voted effective..makes me think* nice pic too~very unique*
I'll admit...I was all excited and thought I was gonna see Vin.
21Miami Gal, I totally agree with you. It's a good thing we didn't do anything about the ice age thirty years ago, think how hot we'd be now! (just kidding.)
22Well, this is certainly better than those ads a few years ago where people were drinking urine... Does anyone else remember those?
Anyway, I'm not sure that the above ad raises awareness about global warming so much as exploits a current issue of debate. Parrots? Anyone who has had to contend with pigeons in urban areas knows how nasty they are; the photo almost goes as far as to assert a "brighter side" of global warming.
23That is so cute Diesel.
24Now, how about you actually do something for the environment instead of just ading about it?
You're not even going to attempt to act like you care to put out a green line?
These ads are not raising awareness about global warming at all, they're making it look fashionable.
Parrots on the street? Deserts everywhere?
Awesome! At least accessorizing will be easier!
I love this campaign -- !!!!
