We all have a pair of favorite jeans that we want to last a lifetime. Unfortunately dry-cleaning is expensive and handwashing is a pain. The problem with machine washing and drying jeans is they tend to fade and lose their stretch over time. Fab to the rescue!

Wear jeans a couple of times before washing — unless of course, they're dirty or have a stain. Less washing will help preserve the color of your jeans. Invest in a detergent that specializes in color washes such as Caldrea's Dark Wash ($12). Don't forget to wash in cold water — hot water will melt that gorgeous dark stain away. Also, set your dryer to low or medium heat to avoid over drying, which can cause your jeans to lose Lycra and thus, lose that precious stretch.

OOoo great post. I needed this.
Great post!
who makes the middle pair of jeans? i like them!
My brother and I were just researching ways to prevent jeans from fading this weekend, because we both have been complaining about fading jeans. Fab post, Fab!!
Good tips
i've heard also that adding vinegar to the wash will keep colors bright. i haven't actually tried it, but if it works it'd be a nice cheap alternative!
Thanks for the tips.
thanks Fab! this is perfect!
i need new jeans! where is jean no. 1 & 2 from?
I usually wash my jeans on a delicate cycle and only dry them (on low) for about 20-30 minutes. Then I put them on a drying rack to finish drying.
This seems to work.
fabulous
You should also turn them inside out. It protects the color.
Fab could you identify the jeans? Which are MJ and which are J Brand?
Thanks! My jeans need this.
Great tip Fab! One thing I always do is hang dry them instead of putting them into a dryer. Saves energy and conserves the jeans, in the long run.
The 1st one looks like Paige jeans
OK, so I'm not crazy about my lycra-infused jeans (and other cotton pants) shrinking. I admit, I'm a laundry sinner and wash and dry all the way. My jeans and other cotton pants with lycra have gotten tighter lately, but the rest of my clothes fit fine. Glad to know I'm not imagining things and gaining weight. I'll be sure to follow these laundry tips from now on. I've been converted!
Good tip! I love my extra-dark Silver Jeans!
I know that Laundress also provides a wash just for jeans. Being a college student I just use Tide but I always do my jeans in one wash of just denim. I also just air dry my jeans and then press them lightly with a warm (not hot!) iron to smooth out wrinkles.
Something that also help my dark jeans: Wash them inside out!
a little shopbop research has yielded the style of jeans for you ladies wondering!

good luck in your search for new jeans!
Thanks, Fab!
thanks ace!!
I was taught to wash jeans on cold, dry for 10 minutes on low, then hang dry! Even still, I dry clean my favorite pairs.
Thanks Ace! I though they looked like shobop photos!
I always dry my jeans lightly on cool for 15 - 20 minutes and then hang dr afterwards. Its easier to press them that way.
Washing and drying them inside out really helps.
Glad you all liked the story — thanks for finding the jeans ace!
Hmm I always wash and dry on hot thinking that they will shrink since they stretch out so much when you wear them. I guess I would rather have tight, slightly faded jeans than a baggy butt.
Good post. Totally needs to treat my jeans better!
Oooooorrr... how about you think about how environmentally unfriendly (and often times unnecessary) it is to tumble dry your clothes and hang then on a radiator, drying rack or washing line instead?
Just a thought

Yes my best friend swears by washing her dark jeans inside out with some vinegar in it (in cold water). It really does work! (
kgtg1 i totally agree with you!
wash your jeans inside out! it works
Thanks a lot ace.. am so getting the first pair.. I usually wash my jeans in cold water and then air dry it and go over it with a slightly warm iron to get wrid of any wrinkles
Also Woolite now makes a detergent for darks. Probably cheaper than the Caldera and more available. (Target ect)
I find that using fabric softener in the wash and then line-drying my jeans keeps them from losing their shape or shrinking so small that I need a shoehorn to fit my butt into them.
I just got some Woolite Dark for my dark jeans, and a tub of Oxy for my white jeans. I read somewhere (was it here, Fab?) that to keep white jeans bright, soak them overnight in Oxy Clean before washing.
Great post!!
