I think a few countries in Europe may be this way, but I do not know about all. France is a interesting country with some pretty deep-rooted traditions, so this does not necessarily surprise
me. I think perhaps to them, to be open each day for selling, would be a nod too far towards the consumer-driven USA way of living (i.e. shopping as "entertainment" instead of for a specific
need).
And in that respect I don't actually disagree with non-shopping days, not one bit. Sundays for us become movie days, or walking days, or hang around and bake stuff with chocolate in it days.
A lot..but not all..of the shops in Scotland were also shut on Sundays. The general rule tended to be (in my experience) the smaller the store, the more likely it would not be open, with the
big stores open like 12-5ish.
