UPDATE: Steve & Barry's have officially went under and has filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in Manhattan bankruptcy court.
Tear. Mega retail chain Steve and Barry's is headed toward major financial downturn. The 28-year-old clothing chain who recently gained popularity for carrying celebrity sportswear lines — most notably, Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker — at rock-bottom prices has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Steve and Barry's is set to shut down a large number of its 270 stores and will most likely be forced to liquidate all assets. So how does SJP feel about this failed venture? “We are surprised and disappointed that this situation has developed. We are surprised because our understanding, based on the accounting statements we see, was that sales have been very, very strong” said Sarah Jessica Parker's lawyer, Ira Schreck.
Let's not lose hope too soon. The company is looking for an acquisition; Sears and Kmart have showed interest, with the possibility of continuing a partnership with its licensed celebrity lines. Would you miss Steve and Barry's?

thats one store I wont miss.
This is the classic example of "You get what you paid for". The Bitten line looks cool from a far but the way her clothes are stiched is crappy. All of her pants, including jeans are "mom" jeans! and her $8 career pants itch. The tee shirts are weirdly shaped; its just wrong.
1Martini Rossi, OMG! you are dead on with the mom jeans. I am curvy and I tried on some bitten jeans and they were baggy in the front and saggy in the back, LOL. I bought a pair of pants, a shirt and a pair of shoes and returned all three. The shirt had a whole in it, the shoes were pleather and the pants were just o.k
2i won't miss the steve and barry's in the mall, but i would miss the stores that specialize in college apparel ONLY, like the small stores on college campuses. nothing like getting a $20 sweatshirt to tailgate in! are those stores in trouble too?
3I have to say, I don't like any jeans or pants there. The sizes are funky -- one size would be too small and then I'd go up a size and I'd be swimming in them!
That said, I loved this store for their dress shirts! The Bitten and Steve and Barry's lines of dress shirts make up like half my work wardrobe. I also love Venus's Eleven line -- lounge pants, athletic shorts, and cross trainers for $9! You can't beat that for shoe prices.
And where else could you go and get a quality, $9 hoodie!? They had all the local colleges and U's. I felt so much better buying it there than paying $50-plus elsewhere.
I hope they do come out of bankruptcy. I love their lines. Just improve on the pants. Maybe that's what sunk them ...
4I never got the chance to go to a Steve and Barry's, so I'm a little disappointed that I'll never get to see what the hype was all about.
5Ah, Duh! Kmart and Saers are the same company. Kmart OWNS Sears. I worked for Sears when the change happend. It sucked. I got laid off along with a bunch of other people.
6we dont have one in my state.. oh well..
7Steve and Barry's reminds me of goodwill. And as much as I like SJP, her Bitten line is really crappy. The quality of the clothes are so horrible. I would rather invest my money on something that will last longer than 2 weeks.
8I have never heard of it, so no.
9I've never been able to find one near me
10Not really. Went there once, bought two things from Bitten, and one of them had a hole because it was stitched wrong. It's cute, but crappy.
11I brought my Grad Bash outfit from that store, it was some clothes from Amanda Bynes clothing line. I liked the shirts and it was cheap. I will miss it.
12Only because of SJP's line.
13I have a few things from the bitten line that I really love. A cute cami that I've had for over a year now & is in great shape, good quality. Also, a pair of camo capri pants, super lightweight, great for summer, I practically live in them & find they are very well made & modern looking...
14i have like 2 pairs of bitten jeans and a bitten shirt, not the bestest quality but hey, its 8.98! its pretty good at that price.. theres one inthe manhattan mall so i can get to it from school, but ill miss it for sure if it goes. maybe i should stock up on dress shirts from now
15aww man thats not fair. the steve n barry's is al the way in kingston, ma and not in boston so of course im going to miss it. shoot anything that is that cheap (sjp line) im there. o well back to wet seal...
16They were very hit or miss, but they definitely had some great steals! I love my cargo-ish pants and nautical purse I got there.
17Steve and Barry's, plus the SJP and Dear clothing line were total disappointments for me. The one in Burbank was a warehouse, Old Navy style, and had the same weird smell. Forever 21 has much cuter, more in style clothes for the same price.
18never been, n from what i hear, thats fine with me!
19I hope that SJP reinvents her line, this time with quality.
20I will only for the SJP line. I bought a really cute dark denim jacket that i've gotten compliments on. I also got a pencil skirt that was a bit itchy, but it was wool blend, and that's just an itchy fabric. I got a pink dress shirt to go with it, it's thin which is fine by me so I don't get too warm, but what I didn't like about it was that it's incredebly hard to iron. I've gotten dress shirts from Wet Seal that were way easier to iron.
21I work for a company that manages and tracks gift cards, and I've been following retailers filing for bankruptcy on savvywallet.com. My advice? Go spend your gift cards, you may not know how long they will be accepting them. Don't forget The Sharper Image incident: $75m in unused gift cards.
22The one time I went in the store all of the clothes looked so cheap and poorly made. Even though it was so inexpensive I would not buy anything there.
23I liked Steve and Barry's but only for their "Dear..." line by Amanda Bynes. She had some cute styles and I liked how everything was under $20. But I don't think I will be crying if they close down since the closest one is like 25 miles away.
24I don't shop there often, but I did like checking out the SJP line every now and again. I'm surprised by this news, the store near me is always packed with people. Seems to do quite well.
25There are 2 new Steve and Barry's opening in our area. I wonder now if it will push through
26I never shopped there - no stores in my area and never look at their website.
27Hmm, question... How do you produce a strapless cotton dress for $8.95 and still make a profit?
Answer... I guess you don't.
28nope wont be missing it here
29i was only ever in there a few times, so can't say i'll be missing much.
30i will miss it. There is one in horton plaza (san diego CA) I have 2 pairs of skinny jeans and about 6 pairs of flaired jeans (SJP) I love them! they rock and fit well. I love her jeans. TEAR.
31I never got a chance to try on or purchase anything from the Bitten line. Somehow, just knowing it was out there made me feel better though.
32Im sad. I have bought several items from the Bitten line and loved them. I have a pair of shoes from when the line first came out that are still in great condition and i get compliments on them frequently. For the price, the clothes were nice. Where else could you go and get clothes/shoes/jewelry for $8 each?
33Oh yeah just when we got style we could afford then gone. Really loved their clothing and prices.
