For the first time in Project Runway history, the designers were not allowed to purchase their own fabrics. Gasp! Instead, the models they picked at the start of the episode did the shopping for them. And they weren't allowed to buy just any fabric; it had to be environmentally friendly. While some designers were impressed by their models' selections, others were stumped and unable to use most of what was in front of them. Of course, in the end, all the models had something to wear, and guest judge Natalie Portman was quite complimentary to some designers. But what do you think? Was it a good idea for the models to buy fabrics on behalf of the designers?

It was all part of the challenge, if they got to buy their own fabric (and the right amount of it) then all they would have had to do was make a cocktail dress. Big deal.
1If these contestant claim to be designers they should be creative with whatever is supplied to them.
I was really LOL when the models walked in the store and had no clue on what to buy.
I didn't like Suede's dress the ruffle neck dress should've won the challenge.
2I think it was a great twist, but I'm not at all happy with the outcome!!! Wesley was my favorite
I wonder how many fabrics the models really had to choose from -- it seems I only saw four or five actually used.
3I agree Rosa.
I do feel bad for the Wesley guy though because he really did get screwed with the fabric his model chose. But, like everyone else said, it was part of the challenge. and as Tim Gunn says "make it work"
4yeah I agree, this is about skill, innovation and improvisation, its not about the designers having their way every episode like one lang fashion show for their individual collections. The weirdest challenges are often the most entertaining, I think that most of them actually fail when asked (usually in the end of the season) to design a simple evening gown or something like that!
5I agree RosaDilla, the winning dress looked like a collage project (coincidentally, it's for sale on Bluefly for $280).
I don't really care for any of the designers this season, although I loved Kenley's look. Even Tim Gunn seemed disappointed.
Is it just me or do the models seem "off" this season?
6i think it was good for a challenge but what if the designers already had an idea?
7I really liked the fact that the designers didn't get to choose their own fabric. They're not custom dressmakers, but if they were, they often would have clients bring in their own fabrics and say "Make me something out of this." I think adapting to a client's choices is really crucial for doing that kind of work.
That said, Kenley Collins was robbed of her rightful win on this challenge. I admire the amount of work that went in to Suede's dress, but it turned out so horribly. I can't believe the judges didn't notice how poorly cut the bodice was. Regardless of whether or not you like the criss-crossing bias strips, you have to acknowledge that it wasn't very well cut on the whole. That neck wasn't even! Not at all!
I mean, Kenley's dress didn't have enough room for her model's breasts, but other than that, the dress was perfect, wearable and sellable!
8Wesley was my favorite too! I'm quite disappointed he's gone...
9I think it was. That's what made it a "challange"! My only gripe with Runway is that it seems like some of the best/worst designers aren't represented in the top/bottom critique portion of the show. Leslie, and yes even Blayne's dress should have gotten more screen time. Suede's dress was a mess, and Kensley's dress should have won even though it looked like a Chrisitan Siriano/Chris March collaboration.
10Was I the only one that thought Stella's asymmetrical dress was awful?? yuck, I did not like it at all and I thought the lacing made it look so cheap.
11I liked the little retro sequin number by the guy. He was in the middle of the pack, but the fit was great and the little understated oomph got it right.
The winning dress was not well constructed and a bit of a "hot mess"
12It's a good way to know how creative a designer can be with whatever material is given to him/her.
13MAKE IT WORK!
14sumbum...i TOTALLY agree. Stella's dress was HORRIBLE...and it was in the top 3?!? it absolutely looked cheap. i don't get it and i don't get her. OK, we understand--she's edgy. she likes leather. but clearly she wears non-leather clothing herself so she must be able to appreciate garments sewn from actual cloth. all she does is complain...it's a challenge, damn it! suck it up, stella!
15Wesley's dress wasn't all that great but his model's awkward walk was what really did him in(she did a weird bobble at the end of the walk). I agree with everyone who said Kensley should have won. Cocktail dresses are meant to be sophisticated. Suede's was anything but. You could see how poorly finished it was at the neck and across the bodice.
16Who else thinks Suede referring to himself in third person is super creepy?
It was a fun twist, none of the clothes were too horrible.
17And Natalie was awesome, I love her!
i was worried that one of the models would buy only a yard of fabric, or that someone would forget to buy thread or buttons!
18was it me or i just didn't like how must of them got the same fabric that was really aggravating...and im glad that Korto has another chance
19The bigger issue for me was that the models were the clients- they were put in the position of commenting on how well their designer did knowing that it could affect their position on the show. That seems unfair.
20Wesley's dress would have been gorgeous if it had not been for the sh*tty fabric. I will say his sewing was eh on the hem but different fabric woulda saved that cutey.
21I think it was fine, but I don't think they should have been judged based on the fabric choice. For Nina Garcia to include "shiny" in her "ways to look cheap" spiel was unfair because those designers didn't have a choice BUT to work with shiny fabric. And I think maybe the models should have been given more guidelines like "you'll need at least x yards of fabric" or whatever because it sounded like some of them ended up with short dresses just because they didn't buy enough.
22I thought it was a great idea to get the models involved. It was cool to see the designers work under such pressure with material they hadn't picked out.
231) I think the models doing the shopping was great. It's a challenge. Make it work.
2) I think Suede deserved it for innovation. Was it impeccable? No. But I enjoyed innovation of creating his own fabric and weaving and the effort put forth. In the end, it was a great cocktail dress. I like it.
3) Wesley went home because of execution. We all know that the minute your execution is off, expect to go home. He clearly overworked that fabric.
4) Most of the outfits if not all that were too short had no excuse. There was enough fabric had there not been crazy loops or any other extraness all over the dress. The fabric choices could have been used had the designers been more creative. I saw great possibilities when the designer pouted and said this doesn't go together.
In the end, great idea for the models to purchase the materials.
24yeah i don't get why nina was all "cheap is short and shiny". the designers did not choose the fabric nor the amount they received. stella's dress was soooo ugly. it was not unique or pretty at all. i liked kenley's dress but it reminded me so much of that top daniel vosovic made a few years ago so i was a little weirded out by that. i don't think it was intentional but i just found it a little boring because i was thinking "i've seen that before".
25does anyone know where natalie portman's dress came from? i thought it was adorable (just like her)!!
i also believe kenley should have won...she executed her outfit far better than suede!
26Melo D, I agree with you!! When the designer who said these colors don't go together, I said to my husband, those two colors are great and even I was thinking about all the possibilities that he could have done!!
27the show has to be interesting at some point...I thought it was hilarious how they ALL picked the shiny, horrible fabric...so funny though
28It was interesting, but if you look at the first episode you see that Wesley's really a great designer. I think even if the models were going to choose fabric that was horrible to work with (sheesh...), they should've been told how much to bring. It's not fair to expect designers to work with less when they could have more. Poor Wesley :[ that dress was gross though
29i hated suede's dress.i understand it was a creative expression but it looked like crap up close. my fave was the black short number with the white top so flirty!
30The only designer that was not affected by the models buying the fabric was Kenley. In fact, one of the judges- was it Nina?- said she was the only one that used the fabric correctly. How was it that Suede walked away with that win?
Then again, how is it that Stella is still there?
It's only week 2 and it's crystal-clear that only about four of the designers have talent. It's probably even more clear that not one of the 4 will win.
Typical reality TV- the losers always win.
