European Vogue magazines are pushing some fashion buttons. Alas, fashion must always be exciting, daring, and innovative. Can I get an amen?
First, Vogue Italia's all-black July issue and now editor Carine Roitfeld, with photog Mario Testino and muse Raquel Zimmermann, take a stand for fur. One of the longest standing debates in fashion — and here on Fab — Vogue is clearly saying "in your face antifur advocates." This spread is provocative and aggressive; from the high-octane furs to the black leather to the raccoon-eyed model. It's powerful.
Powerful, but is it freaky or fabulous?

the furs they are so proud to wear are off the backs of animals that are clubbed to death or electrocuted so that their death doesnt ruin the fur. maybe carine and raquel should be tasered so they can get a feeling for what thats like. real fur is disgusting on anyone but the animal that grew it.
1I think if someone wants to wear fur they should be allowed to. I understand what beauty says but you should be allowed to make ur own decisions even if other people do not care for it.
2I like this editorial, regardless of its socio-political overtones. Raquel looks fantastic.
3Fur is beautiful, but wearing it basically says "I don't give a crap that these animals were skinned alive."
4I think that if you are going to wear it, you should watch how it's done. Because I guarantee, if you watch it, you will think twice.
Just like eating meat, you should know how they do it and where it comes from.
BTW, I eat meat, don't wear fur.
i think fur is disgusting, and wearing it shows zero sympathy for an animal that has been brutally murdered so that u can look "good". the shots are great, but uhmm .. fur is kinda dead sorry. its a shame testino is the pro fur side... specially cuz he's peruvian like me and he's a greta photographer...
5Fur is disgusting & so are people who wear it.
6Nobody's going to tell me not to wear fur. Don't wear it if you're against it, but don't impose your beliefs on others.
7Yes, they're beautiful ads, but I'm really disappointed in Paris Vogue for the message they're sending. I mean, I'm all about making a statement, I just wish they were making the OPPOSITE one!
What's French for a**hole?
8I think that just killing an animal for its skin is not fine, is a horrible thing to do, even though I'm not vegetarian, but is one thing to kill an animal for survival and the other for "style", and killing for "style" is not fine.
9I don't like the message. But regardless, she's not even wearing the fur well.
10Ditto to beautyandthebeast & Maraina. Fur belongs on animals, not humans.
11Freaky. I am very anti-fur and wish others would see how cruel it is to wear fur.
The photography though is fab; love the angles.
12I agree with cmoon. After watching a documentary on how the animals are tortured, I will never wear fur. While I understand that fashion should be daring, I also think it should be ethical.
13I love French Vogue for taking a risk. It's never a boring issue with them. Fur is a choice just like eating meat, having dairy, and being a vegetarian.
14I understand it's a sensitive issue .
15To see it in Vogue is one thing, what I find truly disturbing right now is that there are more people in this poll who seem to be for it than there are people voting against it...
16Fur is disgusting. It's too bad they used their creative talents to highlight cruelty to animals.
fleurfairy: When someone else's belief supports unnecessary cruelty to living beings, I (and others) will definitely speak out. To me, cruelty for fashion is the same as cruelty for entertainment, like fighting dogs. Besides, some people are unaware of how these animals are treated and welcome the chance to fully understand the issue.
17Well I don't think Coco Chanel would agree that this fabulous following her words "A girl should always be two things...classy and fabulous."
18You absolutely SHOULD be allowed to make your own fashion choices... unless they come at such a high, painful price for other living beings.
19Fur is for self-asborbed, tacky, ugly zombies. Right, fab?
And toty, eating meat is hardly necessary for survival. Just sayin.
20Personally, fur will never enter my wardrobe. Even though I'm an animal lover; the main reason is I just don't like it. When you see fur glamorized in magazines or in film their able to make it some what classy. Though, in everday life it looks frivolous and disgusting.
21I love fur- the texture is soft and fluffy! And it's wonderfully warm, as well. A fur coat is something that should be an investment; pay a lot of money for a quality, warm and classic coat, not something frivolous that you'll wear for a season or two. Fur's beautiful and primal, and I don't think we should eschew it for "ethical reasons". True, we shouldn't just off endangered creatures for their pelts, but I see no reason for not wearing the fur of farmed animals. Aren't your shoes made of leather?
Eating meat and wearing animals are natural. We shouldn't gorge on meat or wantonly kill creatures for their fur, but there's nothing wrong about it.
22Great photography, awful message.
23Everyone here who loves fur - how would you feel if those coats were made out of cats and dogs? These animals have the same feelings as out beloved pets.
24Those coats may very well BE made of cats and dogs! It's definitely not uncommon for American businesses to 'accidently' sell garments adorned with cat and dog fur from China.
25Foxfairy, have you seen an investigatory video on fur farming? I think you'd barf and then feel like an idiot for trying to justify the treatment to these animals. Go to HSUS.org and watch a video, I dare you.
foxie, I have and maybe I'm heartless, but I don't mind. Although it could be better, I don't have a severe problem with fur farming. I understand how the animals are slaughtered for fur and food. I don't mind.
26HOT!
27Yikes. I'm staying far away from this debate.
28I personally love Raquel in that picture. The expression on her face is priceless!
As for the editorial itself, it PETA can slam Carine Roitfeld for wearing fur and using it in her magazine, I don't see why she can't fight back!
I was given a fur coat and never wore it because it freaks me out but if other people want to wear it, it's fine by me.
29that should be 'if PETA' not it.
30I'm not thrilled about fur, but I own a fur coat. I get flack for it constantly. People don't ask where it came from, they just yell at me about it. So they don't know it was inherited from my grandmother, who sewed it herself from pelts that my grandfather brought home. It's fox, if anyone is wondering, and Pawpaw shot them because they killed their chickens.
Aesthetically, the photos are interesting. Message wise, can't say I love it.
31I personally don't wear fur. I think it's cruel, and I believe we could look stylish without abusing animals. But really, I think it is up to each and every one of us, it's your choice whether you're pro or against fur.
32Fur is disgusting and brutal. It just shows that the people who wear it without giving a second thought have no respect or sympathy for animals. You can still look fabulous without having a furry carcass wrapped around you.
33i love this!
so controversial!
34I wear fur ALL the time. I love it. Are Eskimos brutal human because the wear fur? Has anyone been to an animal retirement home? They are put on this Earth for sustainance and use. Were Adam and Eve brutal for using animal hides to cover their nakedness? Think about it people. I cannot STAND when people talk about fur this and vegan that. Utter nonsense! So does it matter if the cow in my hamburger is killed humanely? not at all. The cow will still be dead...
35I don't think it's 'freaky' or 'fabulous' I think it's disgusting.
36Didn't Adam and Eve use fig leaves?
Anyway... Ethics aside, I think those photos are ugly as hell. And the model looks half dead. And the fur she's wearing looks skanky. Purely aesthetic opinion.
37I don't really like fur, but I appreciate the concept for this editorial because PETA is an absolutely awful organization. They only care about two things: animals for fur or animals for food. The latter of which, is a necessity for many people. There are far more important animal rights and conservation issues out there that they could be focusing on but they continue to grip about the same thing over and over again. The day PETA stops worrying about animals that are killed for food (which humans have being doing forever and which animals do as well) and instead about animals in the wild is the day I start thinking of them as something other than low-lifes who got their start scaring elementary school children in vegetarianism by telling them they were murderers and horrible. And I say this as a vegetarian and an animal conservationist.
38Without bringing my personal opinion on fur into it...
I think the spread is an excellent concept. Not a huge fan of the photos... but I love Euro Vogues for the risks they take.
39if by freaky you mean f-ing stupid.
40I think the message sucks, so I can't get past that.
41Overall, this has a very arrogant feel. I hate to see the blatant disregard for animal rights displayed in such a major magazine.
42GO European Vogue.
43It's not freaky. It's not fabulous. It's DISGUSTING. The model should be ashamed to be in that picture.
44I think Paris Vogue is very brave for publishing this! Regardless of how you feel about this, the pictures are striking. Also, I think everyone should keep in mind that they are wild animals, not pets, and would you be as up in arms if it was projecting the opposite messages. I respect Paris Vogue for having the chutzpah to express such an unpopular opinion
45In a fashion age where faux furs that are just as good as the real thing, there is no reason to wear actual pelts. You're choosing death over life, pain over peace. That's messed up and it says a lot about who you are.
46To me, fur is only beautiful on alive animals.
47Sadly, people wearing fur remind me of the Nazis, using human skin for lamp shades.
I think fur wearers keep having to defend themselves because they know it downright stinks. I would be ashamed to be seen anywhere near someone like that.
48killing animals for fashion is digusting.
49there really is no freakin need for you to wear fur. other materials work just as well to keep you warm and look less tacky. that's what i think of when i see women who wear fur and jack asses p.diddy and jay-z wearing fur...EFFIN TAAAAAAACKY!
wow ... could they have been anymore NON ORIGINAL? it's stupid. my 5 yr old niece could have thought that up. i hate it. she looks dead and the statement still doesn't justify killing animals for vanity- so the result: pointless and drab. HATE IT. it's not FREAKY it's plain DUMB.
