As the model health issue turns, it has been announced that a model health certificate for London Fashion Week is “an unworkable solution,” according to Hilary Riva, chief executive of the British Fashion Council. What is further disappointing, “From our conversations with our international counterparts in New York, Milan and Paris it has become clear that they do not recognize the need for an international health certificate.”
The BFC already banned models under 16 from walking the London shows and requires the shows to have healthy backstage environments. Also, the BFC is developing a website that will have advice for models and aspiring models, with links to sites about eating disorders. I'm not so sure this is as strong as a health certificate . . .

I feel like this issue will be all talk and no action... and it's sad because young women are dying
1I agree Mintie.
2what a disappointment. if nobody steps up, it's never going to end. really, really sad.
3The model in that picture must weigh like 100 pounds. Let's get some healthy girls on the runway!
4Does anybody else think that dress would look better with some curves under it?
5Mintie is right--the fact that the BFC called a health certificate an "unworkable solution" means that they don't intend to do anything. All these orgs say they care but the industry continues to promote images of women who look like skeletons. Very few people are that skinny naturally.
6agreed coral...would look way better on a real woman. Pass it here please! LOL
7This is sad but not surprising. I don't expect this to change anytime soon. Models look like they are on the brink of death, and that's what's 'hot' now
its a big shame. But what would this health certificate outline or enforce? What are the conditions on this certificate. Anyone know?
8mainly, a BMI greater than 18.4
9ok then ta missyd
10I weigh 125 and am 5'9" and as much as I eat (and Healthy i might add) I can't gain weight and I dont mind it. Yes eating disorders are still a problem (and should be banned from runways) but some people are just naturally that thin and tall. It's in my genes so its got to be in others as well.
11Seriously? Links to sites about eating disorders?!
That is beyond lame. The only thing that is going to change things is for designers to make clothes that hang well on healthy bodies -- then they won't need the crutch of a coat-hanger model to help sell their garments!
12I really like that dress - but as someone said, someone with curves would look better!
13I wish the designers would get involved in this. They're the ones that select the models. The only way to do that is to not buy the clothes that are paraded down runways on human twigs.
14it means nothing's gonna change - unfortunately, the designers and stylists are the very ones who pitched a fit about this. they love the skinny.
15I have a hard time with people telling designers that they need to make clothes to fit "curvy women." Shouldn't it be their decision to design clothes for whatever body type they choose. I firmly believe and will forever argue that skinny models are better for runway work.
16The clothes fit duchess208. Most of the models in fact are too thin for the clothes they are modeling.
KathleenxCouture you have a BMI of 18.5. So the models would have to be thinner than you to have a BMI under 18.
17As much as I love fashion and the industry the one thing I can't agree with is the whole Model Issue. Personally I don't want to see a 14 year old girl on a runway. I want to see a woman. I get that some models have speedy metabolism's and some who are just lucky to be built with legs up to the heavens, but it clearly becomes a problem when a model looks sick and in my day I have seen one too many. While the government has tried to step in and create certain bans I honestly don't think it's going to change. The problem really lies on our society and what we want to change. We the consumer's always voice what we want. Designer's and magazines always try to find the new thing but in the end the people have to like it. Obviously we have a long ways to go before this problem fixes itself but in time things can change for the better. Personally I don't want stick figure I like Long, Lean, Athletic builds. I guess I'm a fan of the glamazons.
18i don't understand why not, it can only be a good thing to do. I think i really like that dress displayed.
19I know I'm thin but I don't look sick. Yeah my metabolism is high and I really don't eat as well as I should but please believe I think models should be a size healthy and not deathly thin. Things need to change regardless. At this point, it's any means necessary whether the models say enough is enough, I'm eating more than lettuce and decide to do pilates and workout or designers making better decisions or whatever. Bottom line, it's absolutely ridiculous. It's about the real shape of a woman. We all have some level of curves. I thank God everyday for my hips! Lol. Let's embrace healthy woman. And on that note, I'm getting something to eat.
