Interesting. What you see here is Katie Holmes in a navy leather bodice halter dress she wore to the Tropic Thunder premiere. But did you see who designed it? Holmes Yang. We've known Katie's style evolution is largely thanks to stylist Jeanne Yang, and the two are clearly taking their relationship to the next level.
What do you think? I have to say my eyes go to those caged shoes rather than the dress. Navy isn't my favorite on the red carpet, even though the leather banded bodice spices it up. Apparently there's no collection in the works, so we'll just have to keep an eye out for some more Holmes Yang modeled by you-know-who. Thoughts?

Things that I do not dig about this outfit:
-the bodice looks black in comparison to the skirt (photography, but it still bothers me)
-the horizontal banding and contrasting fabrics
-it looks hastily hemmed
-it is bunching across the hips
-the shoes shorten her legs (tough, considering she is tall)
So...I do not dig anything, I suppose.
I like it okay. She looks like she feels empowered by the outfit and that is important ...especially since she seems so lost in life and with what to wear anyway. (her smile is still pushed and fake.)
She dresses quite old for her age... and even though there is leather on this dress, it still doesn't seem very young
It's ok but I don't like the contrast between the leather and the navy
I'm kinda underwhelmed. I like the bodice, but it does look kinda old. Maybe its the color. Maybe its better on a curvy(ier) figure. I can't really put my finger on it. Very undecided.
This dress made her look like she had a bit of a belly even though she's stick thin, so I didn't like it for that reason. Maybe she wanted to start the baby rumors again?
I liked it more when I thought it was black...
The top portion looks fine and is at least flattering but the skirt portion is poorly made. Even the fabric looks cheap and pulls and gathers at all the wrong places> She tends to be really slight on top and a bit more bottom heavy and the dress higlights just that.
Oh, whoops, I thought the bodice was black too. And to me, it looks like they just wrapped black electrical tape around the top of the dress. Overall it just looks very cheaply made.
i applaud the effort of making their own design. i much prefer this to the pegged jeans. not attractive on anyone.
I agree with misfitgirl's comments. Also, despite Katie Holmes obviously being a skinny girl, the cut of the bottom half of the dress makes her look wider than it should. I just don't think this is a flattering look for her. Maybe it would look better on someone with a different body type.
I hate it. Her facial expression does not convince me she likes it, either. She seems to be in an awkward pose. Her legs look all weird and...what exactly is she trying to do to her hair? Confusing.
It's alright, I don't hate it but I don't love it either. I won't even remember it in a few minutes.
I hate everything about this outfit
I can't decide if I like it or hate it. I like the color & the style, but the bodice looks like it was badly hemmed and it just seems unfinished and unoriginal to me.
I agree with misfit girl too, the first thing you notice is how badly the skirt falls, and there's NO excuse for a bad hem -- that's what double-sided tape and an iron are for. She looks reverse-bow-legged, is that even possible?
I don't like the dress, but I do like the shoes. Her hair looks cute in this pic too.
I like the silhouette and the leather. It makes her look tall, leggy, and classy, but still hip. But I can see what everyone else is saying about the skirt. Those shoes are fab! where can I get some?
not feeling it
it's the wrong length and the cut of the skirt is giving her a paunch. ew. love the shoes though.
Ever since Dawson's Creek, anything she wears or does is just crazy to me..nay on navy..nay on the bodice...thumbs down for Kat
It looks like a really cheaply made department store dress to me. Up top it's trying to be edgy (or something??) and down the bottom it's too matronly. But I find nothing very original or inspiring about anything Katie wears and agree she seems lost and searching for a style to make her own. The worst is the awkward pose.
Not impressed. And I don't really like navy.
no no no
Normally Katie's fashion tastes for the red carpet has been great, but her stylist made a major faux pas with this one. The bodice looks stiff, plus it looks like she had her stylist wrap electric tape around the bodice at the last minute.
NoT! The dress makes her look short and stumpy when she is clearly a tall girl. The top looks like it is made out of plastic and therefore makes the dress on the whole look cheap. I don't like the way the skirt fits her - seems awkward. Not a good Look!
Looks homemade. Also she does look miserable. Is she just tired or is there something else, I wonder.
And although a lot of people would love to have her body I don't feel she always dresses it right.
I want those shoes! (minus the strap around the ankle)
It would be a lot better if the skirt was just shorter.
I think this dress looks better from a different angle (Google Holmes Yang dress), but I still don't like it. If she was going for a pencil skirt sort of effect (high waist), i think the fabric should have been heavier weight, so it doesn't bunch at her stomach and below the bodice. If that wasn't what she was going for, I think the bodice should have been longer. The black leather bodice and caged heels are also too much for me. Too costume-y.
its ill-fitting
I'm with misfitgirl too!
It's ugly and the person wearing it doesn't help much.
It has no waist!
I think this dress would look much better if she had different shoes. They are the first thing I noticed, and they are horrible for this outfit. Especially since they appear to shorten her legs.
This is a really sexy dress, but it does not fit her right at ALL.
Now if somebody that had a little more of a figure and curves wore this dress...I'm sure most people would vote love it
Well the fit is terrible and the length is completely wrong. The whole dress would have looked much better if it hit right above the knee. There is just too much here. I happened to love navy, but it needs to pop more to look good. This is a pretty dull navy. Not to mention, I think her hair was styled very poorly. I don't know what it is but I don't think she can style short hair well. It always just seems really off.
There is something wrong with the length of the dress...I think that it would look better shorter
i agree with misfitgirl's comments. the dress is ill fitting and looks cheaply made. katie is a beautiful girl and usually dresses so much better.this does nothing for her.
There is always something wrong with her major event styling. What she wears is usually straight off the runway with little personal interpretation. She dresses in absolutely the finest couture however her choices are uptight, lacking spontaneity or whimsey. This ages her look.
This outfit: love the shoes, though they dominate the outfit. Skirt poorly fitted, looks like a Project Runway 'auf wedersen'.
I think she looks happier in this picture than she has in years! Her face has that old Katie Holmes glow and dancing eyes. It's a pretty dress, and obviously, makes her feel good.
Like the idea of the dress. Hate the shoes.
does nothing for her figure. 2 thumbs down.
I like the dress...
Hate it.
is it humanly possible for her to be standing in a less flattering pose? seriously.
and the dress is hideous.. katie holmes scares me. she's definitely been brainwashed, and i feel bad for her kid. tom cruise is clearly a control freak - history of psychiatry, anyone?
I've forgotten what it looks like already, so I guess that means I don't like it at all.
no!!!! i don't like this dress at all. she looks so mature (read: old!) here.. in a bad way.
The top half looks like something I could do - not well put together. Hate it. She looks so old.
