With the fashion world at her fingertips, Michelle Obama could have worn a frock from the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent, or St. John at the Democratic National Convention. Instead, Obama opted for a '50s-inspired turquoise blue fitted sheath dress from her favorite hometown designer, Maria Pinto. This leading lady is loyal, and we love it.
The designer has been dressing Michelle and her two daughters since the beginning of the campaign trail. "She's like an average customer. She'll say, 'Oh, I like that dress.' She'll buy one or several," said Pinto, who credited Obama for her success.
Timing couldn't have been better for the designer, who recently rebounded from employee embezzlement that resulted in bankruptcy and an illness, which left her bedridden for six months. Obama has been spotted wearing Pinto's frocks throughout the campaign trail and if she continues, Pinto's success will rise as well.

She looked good, but not too "fancy" -- which was a good choice because a lot of people think she's too fancy/snobby/whatever
1I don't see why she should be expected to wear designer clothing. I mean, it's not like the average person can relate to that anyway. How many of us walk around wearing YSL?
2I think she looks absolutely fabulous and extremely classy. I can definitely see her exuding her inner Jackie O.
3I could care less what the political implications of her dress are, but I don't think she should be criticized or praised for wearing a specific designer. If she whipped out YSL, for example, I wouldn't have thought any less of her, but I don't think she looks "less" glamourous wearing a small hometown label. The focus should be on her message and her husband's campaign, not on what she's wearing.
4I think it's great that she sticks to the same designer. Sure, it might be something she consciously chooses to do in order to relate to us, and I think it's working. Michelle has looked amazing in every outfit she's worn so far on the campaign trail, and she always looks radiant and confident in her clothes. Maybe Cindy McCain should take a cue from Michelle... she tends to look stuffy and conservative in her clothes.
5First of all, I thought her speech was phenomenal! But then I love her dress! It suited her so well and was just right for the occasion. I think it is great that she stuck with her hometown designer. I really want her to be first lady!!!
6
7First off, her speech was pitch-perfect. Her outfit was great as well - I love that she looks put together without looking overdone. Also love how she doesn't wear the expected red, white and/or blue garb, it's so refreshing!
8She's chic, down to earth, and her speech was great. Fabulous choices all around!
9I admire Michelle Obama and her style. Her speech was warm and inspirational. She'd make a Fab first lady.
10It is a beautiful dress, perfect blue. Ditto that Michelle Obama makes great choices.
11Leaving the politics out of it...
12She looked great and had a goosebumpy-good speech. Chicago doesn't get much fashion love, so I was happy to see Maria Pinto be highlighted. I agree with sweetstanzy, too — Michelle has great style and would bring a lot of it to the White House. (Also, Malia looks like she could be a runway model in a few years. That girl is GORgeous.)
13Yes, very good choice. The turquoise color really complemented her skin tone and the little jewel detail was just enough.
14She wore the dress and the not other way around.
She has a great sense of style and I really do like the dress on her. I voted "other" because she just needs that little extra umph to make in truly fabulous, I would say pearl necklace. A belt would look nice but I'm sure it wasn't the designers intentions for it to be belted.
And I'm sure you want to respect that.
15Heidi MN - of course she could have worn anything and it should not detract from her message but this is FAB not Citizen so I think its appropriate to follow her wardrobe because thats what FAB does.
16sorrry, I meant HeidiMD
17I think she looked lovely.
18I'm with CoCoChic...politics and fashion...eh
19I think it's fantastic she stayed loyal to her hometown designer. The dress isn't anything to talk about, but the gesture is admirable.
Am I the only one who thinks her style is overrated? Everyone is comparing her to Jackie O, but I wouldn't put her in those ranks. If Cindy McCain were wearing the same frocks, would anyone take notice? And for the record, I'm an Obama supporter
. Just
playing devils advocate.
20Fab that she stuck to a local, small-name designer, but NOT fab that she doesn't look all that great...It's kinda boring and hits at just the right spot on the leg that it makes her calves look a mile wide.
21I love her, she's amazing and she looked stunning but not in an unattainable way....
22i'm with shop, coco and emes
I also agree with spharrell
23What is the hoopla with this woman? She doesn't have 1/100th of the style that Jackie Kennedy did. I am not impressed with her in the least. I'm sick of being pushed into thinking her a "style icon" because Oprah says we have to.
24fleur, just b/c other people think she's got style doesn't mean you have to. It's sad that you'd feel pushed into having an opinion that isn't yours...
My guess is that Oprah doesn't really care if you share her opinions!
25She'd down to earth- love her!
26She looked gorgeous and I think that it is wonderful of her to support a designer from her hometown. The color teal looked amazing on her.
27Nasty dress...its a horrible color, fits like something off the rack, and that brooch looking thing in the center of the front is so tacky (like the fake-glam you see in the jr's section.
28Looks like Maria Pinto should create a line for one of the 'marts (K or Wal)!
fleurfairy-well spoken.
29I didn't like the dress. And I felt bad because it was distracting me during the speech, though I didn't pay a bit of attention to what any of the men wore. I don't want to have double standards but it's hard.
And I don't think I follow the comments about politics...what's political about this?
30I personally don't like this dress and am not impressed with her style overall. However, it is good that she is loyal to her designer.
31She looked stunning in this dress, her bod looked rockin' (if you can say that about a political persona, ha), her hair was crazy-shiny (seriously, it was liquid-y), the turqoise color was perfect, the jewel was just the right touch of femininity - and oh yeah, because she also gave an amazing speech, she blew the lid off the place. LOVED it.
32I thought she looked beautiful. The color is a really good choice for her skin tone. Her hair also looked beautiful and shiny. If she'd gone with a major designer, it would have furthered the "elitist" myth.
I also think it is not going to be easy to get an unbiased opinion from most people. Those who oppose her husband's politics, maybe inclined to dislike her as well. Which I don't understand, by the way. I don't like McCain's politics but I can admit when Cindy looks good (and she usually does look very good).
33I think she looks great, but I'm sick of the focus on how women in politics look. Kind of an obvious double standard, isn't it?
34I agree with everyone that said her speech was great, btw.
The color and cut of her dress was lovely. The brooch was the cherry on top. I really liked her whole look. The pic above does not do it justice, imo.
I think we should be able to talk about political figures' clothing on here- both parties.
35The best part of the dress was the broach. You can't really see it in the above picture.
Here it is:
36The broach is really beautiful. Thanks for the pic, Harmony.
37No prob.
38who are we kidding?! michelle obama could've worn an oversized tattered tube sock, delivered that flawless speech, and still looked fabulous! she's channeling jackie o. in everything she does. she's not going to wear oscar, ysl, or something else "editorial" because truly fashionable women don't do that: they wear good quality lesser-known brands. and she's done that to the hilt!
who made her broach? that appurtanance made the entire ensemble.
39I think she looks really good!
40Wow! Maria Pinto has some beautiful stuff. I'm kind of drooling right now. I live in Chicago. Maybe if I don't pay rent for three months I can wear one of her dresses to the Jeff Awards this year.

41I think she looked nice and very appropriate.
Sticking with the hometown designer instead of going with a high-end couturier also helps to reinforce the central message of her part of the campaign: that she and Obama aren't the elitists they're often made out to be.
42
43let's not get carried away: it's probably takes MORE money to invest in and know about these niche brands than it does in the big names! any person who gets blessed with a little bit of money runs out and gets gucci and chanel and all that, but it takes those who really walk among the upper classes to know about these smaller houses.
it's not like she wore sheath from forever 21.
44Harm, the Maria Pinto clothes are beautiful. I loved so many of them. And the shawls are beautiful, too. If you do decide to get yourself evicted so you can afford a dress, you should totally post pictures.
45she looked good, but i dont think its should make any difference for anyone who is voting, to look at the wife!
46Thanks Fleur for a refreshing opinion that strays from the norm!!
I hope that when the RNC takes place you guys will take time to showcase Cindy McCain's style.
47Oh, I've always thought Cindy was very pretty and nicely dressed.
48Cindy always looks pretty and dresses well. No question about that.
49I think she looked fab, and it's nice that she sticks with her hometown designer instead of opting for a high-fashion designer.
