The grand finale of my Fashion Week was the Project Runway finale show. And what a show it was. Before the season five contestants showed their collections, it was a reunion among familiar faces. It's always a joy seeing Runway alumni gather and mingle. The recently booted Blayne and Terri were there — all smiles — and favorites like Jay, Rami, Jillian (wearing a familiar knit sweater from her collection), Chris March, and Jack Mackenroth (who I chatted with at the Jill Stuart show, he is so sweet) all made cameos. Enter Christian Siriano, who had his own Spring show the night before. Then, Michelle Tractenberg, Rachel Zoe, and Harvey Weinstein were chatting about. Quite the spectacle!
Anticipation grew once Heidi, Nina, and Michael Kors all came out to welcoming applause. Side note: Are Heidi and Nina both wearing Roland Mouret dresses? They looked great, but I wonder if that was planned. At 9:30 a.m. the lights dimmed and Heidi appeared, microphone in hand. She said some heartfelt words to the people of Bravo and the Magic Elves (the show's producers) — saying goodbye and thanking them for five great seasons. To bring you up to speed, Runway is moving to Lifetime for their sixth season (and that will be interesting in itself).
The guest judge seat remained empty. All week long there had been rumblings about Jennifer Lopez being the guest judge, but it was anticlimactic when Heidi announced that Lopez was unable to due to "a foot injury." Boo. And so, Tim Gunn stepped in at the last minute to serve as guest judge. Don't get me wrong — I adore Gunn — but it was very exciting when Victoria Beckham graced us with her presence last time. Once all was said and done, the first collection, by Jerell, was unveiled . . .
To see the collections of Jerell, Suede, Joe, Korto, Kenley, and Leanne, and to read my reviews, read more.
Jerell
Jerell has one of the most lovable personalities, but his collection wasn't so. He came out and thanked his parents, boyfriend, and bestie, and I was really looking forward to his final collection. Bustiers, ruffles, dramatic bodices, and black and gold comprised his aesthetic. There was a regal undertone, as well as a pirate feel, but the taste level just wasn't that high. His two gowns didn't fit so well, and there wasn't a strong point of view. My favorite look was the embellished cardigan over a striped dress with sheer overlay.
Suede
Oh gosh. I really didn't like this collection. It was immature and incohesive, and the Barbie girl color palette was ridiculous. Suede claimed "Suede's going to rock it" but he didn't. He mixed plaid with pastels, ruffles with one shoulder, and shredded and draped pieces; cotton candy fabrics were utterly unsophisticated. I didn't mind the wedding dress, but that was subpar.
Joe
Joe is vanilla. His heart is in the right place, but his talent is hit or miss. Throughout the season, he's had some winners and losers, but his final works, which he claimed were Americana-inspired, were disappointing. He should have taken a more Ralph Lauren elegance take on the theme, and less Harley Davidson rough and tough. Brown leather corsets, patterned jeans, leather pants, and a navy dress with white stars were misses; a super cute paisley print dress, turquoise ornamentation, and a textured red ball gown skirt were hits. But this collection was not consistent enough to win.
Kenley
Fun, quirky and feminine — just like the girl who made it. I like Kenley, although her distinct laugh annoys some, and her Alice in Wonderland take on "her dream wardrobe" was surprisingly versatile. Each piece was unique, and yet the collection melded together wonderfully. There were a few ooh ahh pieces: the black dress with fuchsia print overskirt (pictured above), the dramatic ruffle teal print blouse and black flounce skirt, and the pink and black colorblock bodice with dramatic tulle skirt dress. Her little feathered hats, which she has a penchant for, were a nice touch. This was possibly my personal favorite — full of eclecticism — but things heated up after she showed . . .
Korto
I think Korto has the most interesting point of view, and her collection was beautifully exotic and elegant. However, there were one too many emerald green dresses, I'm just sayin.' Her collection was "inspired by nature and the landscape and clothes of her native country, Africa." She also designed the beaded and colorful jewelry (which I loved). Her color story was rich: emerald green, turquoise, mustard yellow, white, and ecru. Her silhouettes ranged from a slim halter gown and pouf sleeves to flirty cocktail dresses and asymmetrical cuts. The jungle printed banded belt frock was covetable, but a white frilly long dress was confusing. I loved the sometime Oscar de la Renta exoticism, though.
Leanne
Funny how the six collections gradually got better. I think Leanne is going to win. Her collection was as stellar as any of the professional collections from the week. It was conceptual, beautiful, and theatrical. Leanne claimed she "lost a million hours of sleep" over it, and it showed. Sculptural skirts, dresses, and gowns floated down the runway to the beat of a neutral, cool palette. The craftsmanship was expert and you could just feel the adoration in the air. I would wear the ivory off-shoulder top and turquoise petal skirt and the ivory and beige corset mini dress (pictured above) in a heartbeat. And her modern wedding dress blew Suede's off the (project) runway.

I want that White bustier top dress with the belt and tan ruffle bottom from Leanne's collection SO BAD!!
1I love LeAnne's wedding dress!
2Leanne dresses are really something!
3Leanne's collection is amazing!!!! love it love it love it!
4Korto's was good too.
I'm confused why is there so many contestants showing this time!?! Every year more and more show at FW, why???
Anyway,
- Jerrell- that's a lot of shine. Urg...
- Suede- immature is a good word, Fab; so is "EEEUW!"
- Joe- he doesn't deserve to be there. His is so wannabee.
- Kenley- Love her's the most (she's my fave)! AMAZING!
- Korto- that white dress is misplaced; bad fabric.
- Leanne- She's okay; I've seen ALL of her stuff before and don't find her too original, though.
Did they all have to make wedding dresses?
5I think Kenley and Korto's are great but I think Leanne is going to win. The sculptured pieces are amazing and I love her color palette. Suede and Jerell should have been cut before fashion week in my opinion.
Why even bother making it such a competition if 6 designers go on to Bryant Park? It's much more interesting if it's only 3 people.
6Leanne should win. Save for that episode where she was in the bottom two, she's turned out consistent good work and while her work has a common theme (she seems to like architectural shapes), her work is still different enough from piece to piece. Still though, she's no Christian Siriano.
7I'm confused too, why are there 6 designers instead of 3? Kenley is the most annoying contestant ever. Joe is crazy. I love Leanimal!
8They always show all the designers left so they don't give anything away about the final three. So since there are six designers left after last episode, six showed.
9Jerrell- Way too many sequins, it just looked cheap...
Suede- His theme seemed to be "how many times can I use the same style of party dress."
Joe- Boring, feel like I've seen it before. I wish Stella or even Blayne had taken his spot- they would have been much more interesting to watch!
Kenley- I disagree and felt like her collection was all over the place and needed more cohesion. She always throws together the ugliest patterns too- http://fabsugar.com/gallery/view/1994992?page=0,0,0&show=large ewwwwww!
Korto- I love the long emerald green dress but I think the 2nd short one is way too short and has a little cutout at the crotch like an arrow pointing up there...yikes. Still I think her collection is beautiful, wearable, and cohesive. I'd buy some of it- and not sure I'd say that about any of the others.
Leanne- I can't decide if I love this or not- I want to see it moving and on my big HDTV. Her pieces are beautiful and artistic but not sure how wearable they are- and the colors are pretty boring too. I think she will win though.
10I really hope Korto wins. She has been consistently the best throughout this competition, and I LOVED her collection.
Fabsugar-do you know why they show more and more collections every year? It used to be just the finalists, then last year there were 5, and now this year six. It kind of takes away the prize in a way for the final 3.
11i love leanne's collection the best
12I love Leanne's color palette and collection. My fingers are crossed that she wins!
13Suede SO did not rock it- I really can't believe he got to show at Bryant Park and Terri did not. =( On a happier note- I LOVED Leanne's and Korto's- but I'm torn between which one I prefer!
14Leanne is probably the most consistent. She's had good tailoring and some pretty ideas throughout.
I really think Korto's stuff is lovely though, and has drama - just not as keen on some of the colours she used this time.
Kenley's stuff is ultra-cute, and I would definitely wear a lot of them but I also think her nod back to retro, while fun, could arguably be called less inventive. (but I still like it.)
Jerrell's show was a letdown, I thought it would be better than this.
Joe was hit and miss (I liked the quilty ballgown thing a lot)
Suede..did exactly what I thought he would, its a silly collection with no real sense of women or modernity at all. But then again this is a person who refers to himself in the third person - if you are THAT self-absorbed how on earth can you see anything else?
Horrible colours, horrible style, it makes me think he got the ideas from Blayne.
15Thanks FAB, way to ruin the season
16How is it ruining the season? We don't have any spoilers about who the decoys are.
I loved Leanne's clothes! Korto's color palette was also lovely. Also, three cheers for diversity on the runways!
17Korto and Leanne have it for me. Korto's is more RTW, Leanne's is more toward couture. Tough to say who will take it.
18I think that Kenley,Korto, and Leanne are going to be the final three. I at least hope Leanne is, I think she might be my favorite.
19Hey gals! I love hearing what you think of these collections. I totally don't know why they had six people show - it's a waste and bad planning if you ask me. In February, they had five people show because that's how many were left on the show and they couldn't spoil anything. But isn't the idea to only have the final three make it to Bryant Park? Six mini collections was a lot to witness - especially since only half of them were worth seeing. All it takes is some better planning, and moving the show start date up a few weeks. Oh well, it's still cool seeing all the clothes, no? xo
20I'm so rooting for Leanne...I just love her designs.
21Team Leanne!
22So, J. Lo had a "foot injury" & yet she managed to muster up enough strength to do a triathalon today....hmmm....ok!
Team Korto! I feel like all 6 collections were wonderful, seeing 6 wouldn't have been such a problem but the only 3 worth seeing were Korto's & Leanne's. It's most definitely going to be between the 2 of them. I think that they both come from very different view points; where Leanne is more Couture/(a little)Avant Garde, Korto is more Ready to wear/Easily relateable to all types of women.
Personally, from this point on in Project Runway, if they're going to be searching for the next great American designer they need to look for a designer that will have the ability to create looks that can show at fashion week & still be able to create things that can be sold at Macy's. Hello, Michael Kors is a perfect example of this! If they are looking for innovation, someone with something to say, a designer that can appeal to eveyrone then Korto is the way to go. Honestly, all those pleats will not look very flattering on any woman whose hips are wider that 30" & that's real! Pretty to look at is nice & all but let's not fool ourselves.
Oh & Suede needs to stop designing clothes like, yesterday......talk about wack-a-doodle!
23The quiet one always surpises! From the thumbnails, Leanne's collection is the most versatile and cohesive. I'm going to wait till the finale to see them "full-size," but thanks for the preview!
24I think they def showed in the order of how good they were- save Jerrell and Suede- Suede should have showed last and Jerrell second to last. but Leanne's was amazing and I liked Korto second best. I hope they do place one, two.
25the best collections are Leanne's and Kenley's. but i must say i prefer Leanne's and i want her to win!
26Why did all these people get to show? I thought only the top 3 got to show..?
27Wow. There's a major model switch up somewhere. Jerell and Korto are the only ones with their original models. Kenley has Joe's model. Leanne has Suede's model. Joe has Leanne's model. And I don't even know Suede has. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out.
28Kenley & Leanne are my favorite.
I think Kenley is confident in her designs and doesn't let anyone boss her around so i believe she deserves to be there. Plus her style is very chic and different.
Leanne's designs are plain unique and the color palette was amazing.
I really loved Jerrel's pieces and looks that he created on the show but i only liked a few of his designs for the finale.
29korto is bomb hope she wins.
30Leanne's was sooooooooooooooo cute!!!!! Love hers the best!
31The show has never had only the top three show at Bryant Park. Even the very first season Austin Scarlet (who was the last eliminated) showed. I think you can still see his collection on YouTube. It's all about who is still in the show when it is time for fashion week.
32Korto's collection was good, for sure, but it didn't have the polish of Leanne's.
33"inspired by nature and the landscape and clothes of her native country, Africa.".....sorry, but Africa is definitely not a country, it is a continent.
34SOooo Happy Leanne Won! =D
35Well, fashion really is subjective. I felt that Leanne's collection was overbearing. Too many petals. It made me turn the tv off. I waited to see who had won and it was the petal queen. I would never wear a dress with so many petals on them. I have seen that look before. It is unoriginal. Well, not everyone has taste I see.
36WOW - what a sight:)
37I LOVE KORTO, always rooted for her, because she works with the colors & they fuse together and they look amazing - even if it's a simple look!!! I think her designs are for EVERYONE - from simple to classy would see your looks on red carpet, runways, video clips, outings, etc - regardless of background or ethnic - EVERYONE will look great, comfortable, be WOWED so really KORTO should've won PROJECT RUNWAY:( LOVE YOU KORTO, MAY BIG LABELS NOTICE U & HIRE YOU so you can do your own line of clothing that will sell, sell, sell,
however...
- LEANNE IS AMAZING, her designs are EYE-POPPING...BUT...they are the looks that you can only see on the RUNWAY ... i don't see anyone wearing that anywhere else, except maybe - COSTUME PARTY, RED CARPET & PROM ...but that's it...EVEN THOUGH she does deserve to win the RUNWAY PROJECT - GOOD ONE LEANNE:)
KENLEY...oh kenley - you have a great edge & some mind blowing designs - but color wise - HHHHMMMMMMM I think most of her designs are IN QUESTION...???? I THINK THEY WILL BE GREAT FOR AN OP-SHOP FOR COSTUME PARTY'S OR HALOWEEN & may be needed on movies based on 1960's theme...And her attitude really suck though on the show, COMMON girl GET OVER IT - if I was a customer of yours & I'm paying you to make my dress and if I didn't like it, I would be scared to tell you in case you BITE MY HEAD OFF...LOL
JERELL...I love you too - YOU'RE A RISK TAKER...sometimes you make the colors that I wouldn't really go for but u WORK them in your designs that you put together - WHAT I LOVE IS - WHEN YOU RISK IT, YOU DO - MOST TIMES HITS and sometimes NO HITS - but great - and they are worthy to be on RUNWAY & great for outings - I mean I would see your designs in REALITY SHOWS...EG: THE HILLS, THE CITY etc...
THE REST of the designers...hhhhhmmmmmmm eye sore - they're great for those whole sale stores like K-MART for sure...hehehehehehehe well that's what I think:)
ONE LOVE:)
