Confession: I've already gotten one. I was inspired by Jenni Kayne's Spring '09 collection. I love the long, lean silhouette and nonchalant feel. Think Rick Owens.
Today is the first official day of Fall, and for the next couple weeks we are going to count down our 10 Fall Essentials. So often friends and fams ask us what's new and exciting for the season. We realize fashion can be overwhelming, and we're happy to dwindle it down to 10 fantastic new additions that we're personally coveting and you should too.
I've already worn this skirt with a sexy nude tank top and layered jewelry; I also wore a cardi to add to the mellow vibe. I'm also thinking it would be cute with moccasin boots, chunky knit sweaters, and a cropped leather jacket. The possibilities are endless for this James Perse Maxi Skirt ($175).

looks very 90s. i remember wearing that kind of a skirt to 8th grade promotion. not flattering for us short, hippy girls.
1word, katie...WORD.
2Not for me. It looks like a pair of So Lows, but as a skirt. Sorry, Fab, but I just don't see how that could be very flattering.
3saw this, and immediately wanted the piece in my closet. Katie is so right in regards to how versatile it is. However, because it is a simple black skirt, the price is a bit steep. So, I did a bit of digging, and found the look for less on forever21.com. It's a jersey blend as well, so it will last (unlike 100% cotton, which loses its shape). Go here for it http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=FOREVER21&category%5... (for $17...just purchased it, and can't wait!
4hideous. its like a nun skirt
5Hate it. Sorry FAB!
Just not for me.
6i so couldn't do it... like katie225 i'm pretty sure i had one of these in middle schools and to me it's just ugly and very young
7haha i definitely had one in 8th grade. 2, in fact. one had pockets.
however, i feel like this is an expected move from the maxi dress to the maxi skirt for fall. and i feel with a sexy tank and maybe a cardigan it wouldn't be a bad look.
i can see me being on the cheapskate end, however, and just layering like hell over my black maxi dress.
8I agree with Katie and the others that this is really outdated looking. It's also ridiculously overpriced, and could easily be made or purchased elsewhere for much cheaper.
9Omg, I bought one just like it in about 1998 from Jcrew. Blech... I am not revisiting this one.
10No, I am so sorry, but I too remember these skirts from middle school. I also had long, flowy ones. God, I just can't go there.
11I actually just bought a Rachel Pally skirt like this in grey that I absolutley LOVE! It is super comfortable and like you FAB, I too can see it with endless combinations!
12I have a plaid floor length skirt that I like to wear with an ivory cami, but I'm not sure I feel about a tight jersey one though...
13I have one, i bought it 11 yrs ago and no longer wear it.
14I think it would look really cool on someone with a great figure - like I always see Rachel wearing long skirts like this on old episodes of Friends and they still look great - even though it's 7 or 8 years old...
15that being said, I have never liked such long straight skirts as I have very wide hips and they are not flattering on me at all...
16Gross. Sorry, don't like it. Wayyy to 90210. I remember Brenda wearing this...also Valerie. Maybe even Donna. They probably all did. It is VERY 90's. If it's making a comeback, more power to the girls that like them though! I definitely won't be wearing them. My favorite fall item is flat, to the knee boots! With skinny jeans or a short skirt!
17to=too. god i hate typos
18Like everyone else said, I too was guilty of owning some back in middle school! But I still have them in my closet and I think they still fit, so who knows? Maybe I'll experiment.
Then again, I'm not sure enough time has passed since middle school to pick up that trend again. Not to mention I'm 5'2 and the look would make me look 2'5.
19Very 90s. It's so unflattering--especially on someone short like me. I certainly won't be spending $175 to look like a fat cow.
20this is not worth $175. Everyone in middle & highschool had these back in the day and they were coming from wet seal and rave. It's comfy and cute on some people but just not worth "real" money.

oh. no.
22i had one in a jersey material from the gap. in fact i bet it is still buried in my closet somewhere. it was very 1998-99- i remember wearing it in college
23def still have the one i wore in 9th grade. now i know why i kept it. not really. i don't need to revisit this look.
24I just bought a brown maxi skirt with travelling in mind, but totally agree with you as well....plus, you could always hitch it up, add a belt, and wear it as a dress.
25with moccasin boots? think hard before you take on this look ladies
26Blech. Who didn't have this in the 8th grade?
I just think this would make my body look even less proportionate.
27I agree, totally 90's fashion. Im only 5' 4" and hippy so this was never a look I could pull off.
28I'm really excited to see your 10 picks!
29Lmb1482 - THANKS for the look for less!!! I'm off to purchase one now!
30I'd give this a try but not in black tho...has to be super slouchy at the bottom like in the pic too.
31Eek! I hate this!
32not essential for me ...
33even the girl in the picture doesn't look good
34I'm sorry but this is absolutely repulsive, I wore things like that back in grade school
35...yikes.
36It's out of stock. I guess not too many people hated it.
I am totally ready to see some 90's things come back around.
37Yeah...I used to have a skirt just like this but since then I've realized (like katie and aphill) that long skirts like that don't look so hot when you're really short and not stick thin.
38i like the idea of a long black maxi skirt but i'm always afraid that i'm not going to be able to pull off the style properly. how long is too long and how short is too short? i think that if i can get it right then i'll have something that i can wear to work since i have a relaxed dress code.
39I'm not sure how I would wear this and I don't think it would look very good on all 5'3'' of my hourglass frame.
40Sorry, this is...unflattering, to say the least.
41Guilty of wearing this kind of skirt middle school!
42but I don't want to make myself look short and stocky...
I usually go for the tall and lean look
i'm sorry but wasn't this 'in' during the 90's with slits on the side...this style needs not to come back!!! it's too long and boring looking...
