It's always sad to see a clothing store with rich history go down. While Steve & Barry's also recently nearly folded, Mervyns is the first major department store to announce its liquidation during these tough economic times. The 59-year-old company will be holding going-out-of-business sales at its remaining 149 locations during the holidays as a way to maximize value for its creditors.
While many may be shocked by this news, some are not: “It’s not surprising that the demise of the company is taking place. Their locations weren’t good enough and their message got diluted. Because of their lack of momentum, their pricing may not have been as sharp as it should have been," said Walter Loeb of Walter Loeb Associates. It remains to be seen if Mervyns will be rescued, but in the meantime, let's bid adieu.

How sad.
1It's Kohls fault ( damn you Vera Wang ahaha) booooo hiss! I have fond memories of Mervyn's I use to get most of what little school clothes I got from there. I remember one of my fav outfits was a purple tunic and stirrup ensemble ahahaha
2Mervyns!! I remember this was one of my favorite department stores from the mid-90s while I was still in middle school. Good times!
3Aw, I'll miss Mervyn's. I used to do all my shopping there in elementary school, and as far as I know, my mom still buys a lot of stuff from there too. I remember the multi-colored leggings I used to rock in 3rd and 4th grade.
4Yes Sad
This was my elementary school clothes staple as well!
5I remember going here with my aunt back in the 80s when I visited her in California...she loved this store.
6Mervyns is foul.
7Mervyns had some good stuff, but unfortunately a lot of its product was just so cheap-looking - they should have revamped their lines and did like Kohl's and Target does (get high-profile, talented designers)...
8I'm not the least bit surprised Mervyn's is closing down. It's still really sad though, I always shopped there when I was a kid
