While sheer tights are de rigueur, opaque is undoubtedly still a major player in the legwear world. That's because matte tights not only make you look good, but also protect you from harsh weather.
These Simply Vera Opaque Control-Top Tights ($9, originally $12) are dark, but let me teach you a trick to make them the most dense of all.

I once read that in order to make her legs appear really dark, Heidi Klum wears two pairs of tights. Smart! I recently decided to put Heidi's tip to the test, and it worked wonderfully. I found that it's best to use the same or similar colors when doubling your tights. This trick is also useful for those who want to keep their legs super warm. It's almost like wearing pants. My only complaint is that it squishes your toes. Try it sometime and let me know how it goes.

I've done this since I was a little kid and mom doubled tights on me when she put me in a dress for church. It is incredibly warm! Heck, yesterday (when our high was 10 with a -10 wind chill), I wished I'd worn a doubled pair under my jeans...it really does make a difference!
1That sounds so confining and uncomfortable, though.
2Not to mention no-fun for bathroom breaks...
3tee hee. i like the rhyming in the last 2 sentences.
4It's like you made leggings.....I'm going to try this on New Years!
5I bet it would work better if you wore boots...usually I buy my boots with a little extra room for socks (or double tights). And maybe you could get one pair in a bigger size and put that one on the outside? Hmmm food for thought...
6I did this yesterday! But because it was really cold out. I also wore gold tights under my leggings on Saturday night and it gave them a cool luster.
7I do this all the time - you just have to find tights that aren't as tight as others to put on the top layer. Or, you could use footless tights as one layer depending on your footwear.
8I feel like this would be uncomfortable, but maybe I'll try it sometime...most of my tights are opaque anyway, so I really wouldn't need to do this.

they are DOUBLE layered originally
10not annoying like dance tights that go sooo uncomfortably high on your stomach, these rest a bit above the waist line. soooo warm too!!!
I use these 100 DEN tights that are thicker, so I don't have to double the tights, as 100 DEN is already the double of the normal opaque ones (50 DEN)
11I always try to find tights that are actually made out of sweater material. Its super warm and they are denser. They are hard to find but if you do grab them up
12I always wear two pairs of tights. It's not uncomfortable, and I stay much warmer. Even better, those tell-tale signs where the tights get thin over the fatter part of your leg are not visible. One homogeneous dark color.
13This is why you have to buy wool tights
. JCrew makes great ones.
14I wish I could do wool tights...but I'd be scratching my legs every couple minutes. Itch!
It's actually not uncomfortable. I usually don't even notice.
15I can't wear tights. They dig into my belly.
16oh this is a cool idea. you could layer a fun color under some black lace ones.. think i might give it a whirl
.
17i've been doubling my tights lately and i love it! it makes me feel more secure that nothing will be seen
and of course it keeps me warm!
18hey, I do this all the time! I usually do it too keep warm, but it also looks super fab too. I love tights...
19I should try this soon.
Thanks for the tip!
20Double layer tights are also great for making colors really pop! Wear black under dark blue (or even white under bright colors like yellow and pink) for really intense color.
21I can't imagine this would be comfy...
22I used to work at as a waitress in a restaurant where part of the dress code was black stockings, but they always were a little sheer for my taste, especially under the harsh lighting there, so I ended up doubling them, and let me tell you it was the best solution. Instantly opaque, comfy, and warm ... almost like leggings
23where do you find 100 den tights??
24okay thats a very worm idea that i have to try
25I always wear two pairs of tights in the winter! To make sure I'm comfy and look slim I wear a control top tights on bottom, and a brand that fits me looser on top. I also think the more-opaque look is more appropriate with boots.
26Oh Jessie, I
wool tights, too!

Fabsugar previously featured a post to help eliminate bulges when wearing tights (or in your words,"digging into the belly"). It's such a great idea. =)

28The few times i've worn tights i have done like this. i hate to be cold( i cannot have fun like that)and the color is the same all over your leg (not streching/fading)
and another tip: as soon as it is cold outside(i live in NYC) i wear leggins underneath my jeans and im never cold!! it is not tight or uncomfortable at all and the cold air does not get into contact with your skin, this is the only use i have for leggins
29gotta try it tomorrow! people who don't wear tights usually comment that I must be freezing for wearing tights in winter....i'm usually not cold with them because I wear riding boots with them, but i will try this I am sure i will be uber uber cozy!
30I'm damned to never wear tights. I've worn them for the past 3 days and 2 are already ripped.
31not only do i double my tights, i also double leggings! particularly b/c a lot of the cute leggings i have in colors are the thin tight-like kind... i put a cotton pair of leggings underneath and it is much better for the winter!
32I used to have a ridiculous pair of Jonathan Aston tights, which were sparkly lurex gold with maroon flower print. It was a bit garish, so I'd layer that under a pair of black semi-opaques - much better!
I also had some thick purple woolly ones with patterning, so I'd layer some black tights under that. Much warmer, and looked pretty neat!
