She could have chosen any American great: Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors . . . the list goes on. But she chose a newcomer, Taiwan-born Jason Wu. It's safe to say the 26-year-old designer just got a major career boost. The white, one-shouldered flower applique dress is very, very pretty. And what a breath of fresh air it is. Some are saying it's bridal-esque, others are saying that, on the flip side, it's sexy. I say it's both, and neither in a bad way. And let's not forget: Obama's black and white tux is immaculate — has he ever looked more handsome?
The gown is frothy, totally feminine. But is it first lady apropo? I think we've learned by now that Michelle makes up her own style rules. Over the next four years, she'll be breaking any first lady preconceived notions. Isn't that what change is all about? Michelle is destined to be the belle of every inaugural ball tonight.

Love this dress! Is gorgeous and Michell looks great.
1I also adore the dress and think it was the perfect choice!
2Love it!
3she looks fabulous! I am so excited ot have a first lady with style!
4Absolutely gorgeous. She's glowing!
They both look amazing.
5I love that she takes risks with fashion! As usual, she looks fantastic. And he looks great in white tie.
6Definitely not what I had expected (especially in terms of color--I was expecting something red or blue), but she looks stunning! Sure, it is bridalesque, but it works. I love it!
7While I do like the dress I think she could have done much better. Its a bit to Springish to me with the flowers.
8It's so beautiful! I love how the President's bow is white as well!
9WIN.
10I agree with you Fab - I think she looks great and the dress is perfectly appropriate! There are no written rules about inaugural attire so I think it is great that she is willing to write her own.
11I love the dress and love the fact she has toned arms. Killer look.
12Love it!
13I love the dress and I love the fact that fabsugar readers know their fashion....... as opposed to many other sites out there that struggle with the risk-taking. Fashion should be about pushing the limits, taking risks, and for Michelle Obama to highlight two young, diverse and relatively unknown designers...... KUDOS to her.
14Absolutely beautiful!!! She looks Stunning!! I am sooo proud to have witnessed this day....
15hellz yeah! ha, she looks MAJOR. Beautiful gown for such a perfect night, with a handsome man by er side
16I love them! Michelle has fantastic style and looking forward to seeing more of what she wears. She's a first lady style icon, we haven't had such glamor since Jackie Kennedy!
Gorgeous dress!!!
17Wonderful pick. As for Obama, the guy looks good always.
pretty dress. and i like that it's white, the color symbolizes purity and a fresh start.
18I'm not a big fan of asymmetrical cuts usually, but I really like this dress. She looks very pretty and festive, and it definitely seems first-lady appropriate.
19It's gorgeous. I want it!!
20Absolutely stunning!
21seriously though....... how hot is this couple??!!
22I love the dress on her. Their first dance was just such an affecting thing to watch. I got a little teary while watching the two of them gaze at eachother and show so much love.
23I usually do not prefer what she wears but she looked so good in this dress! I want it!
24they both look absolutely amazing. and i teared up at their first dance too, sidra!
25i'm so excited for the future now. outfits and otherwise.
They both look amazing — her dress is beautiful and she's just glowing with pride with her husband.
26wow, wow, and WOW. She looks so fabulous!!!!!
27I think she looks great, but I felt that the dress was a little summery for January. But the more I see the dress, the more I absolutely love is. Her cocktail ring is INSANE.
I hope we also get a post about some of Jill Biden's ensembles. Her red gown was gorgeous.
28She looks great. I agree -- the gown looks bridal. In fact, they both look like a wedding couple, and they look good.
I have a feeling this dress will be knocked-off for bridal gowns this season.
Yes, Jill Biden looks terrific. Red is her color.
29i think she looks wonderful.
30I'm not sure just as I wasn't sure about the yellow this morning.
31She does look good though, I admit. Guess I was expecting something a bit more glamorous. I liked Jill Biden's dress a lot. Who did she wear?
Stunning. They both looked gorgeous and you could feel the energy and excitement when they danced. So magical!
32She looked fantastic! The dress looked perfect on her.
33I do agree that the Jason Wu design is beautiful with an Ode to wedding attire. The only negative, in my opinion, would be the bodice. Mrs.Obama is such a beautiful woman with a tall, muscular and lean physique but, the bodice of the gown gives the illusion of her (The First Lady) being so much more bulkier and wider making the fit "some-what" unflattering.
BAATHSHEBA
34I liked the first outfit. I thought that made her look fresh and professional as well. The gown,,,,, not so much,,, to bridal,,, not crazy about the fit on her either. She still looked really pretty but I think she could have looked better.
35I think Michelle was absolutely stunning last night... and Barack wasn't too bad looking either
But really, I was digging Michelle's toned arms... time for me to add more arm weight-training!
36Actually, I think the dress is horrid. It looks like a bedspread on the bottom and a bunch of rags sewed together up top. It did not flatter her and looked like it was ill-fitting on top.
37Beautiful gown. She looked amazing!
38The shape is good, but the color and whatever is on it is not.
39Amazing dress !
40couldn't be any better than this
AMAZING!! and so exciting for Jason Wu!!!!

This is much better than the day look. I agree it's a little bridal. I thought she'd go for something...more elaborate or poofy--- maybe billowy is a better word.
42Meh.
43I'm not too crazy about her dress. I think she could have found something much better.
44I was really afraid I was going to hate it. Sometimes she looks so perfect, and sometimes she looks so off. But the more I see it, the more I love it.
45I absoulutely love the fact that she chooses young and up in coming designers!!
The Obamas have a knack for this. They are really in tune to art in that way and I can't get enough of it.
I loved her dress. It was like her coming out party and I think it was very appropriate.
46Stunning. Only two other First Ladies wore white dresses at their Inaugural Balls: Jacqueline Kennedy and Nancy Reagan, both of whom were highly fashionable. I also appreciate that she chose young, little-known American designers that are of color for this day. Excellent choice all-around.
47I like the dress she wore. Although I not a big fan of white dresses, it worked for her. She wore the dress well and she looked fabulous. Barack was stunning in his suit. Two people that go so great together.
I can't wait to see the Obama's out together more at formal events. They look so good together.
48Loved her dress!!!! The white looks beatiful on her. They both look wonderful. Obama looked emaculate in his matching tux w. the white. The whole first family set the bar high yesterday. They were glowing and I love that they have a great and inventive fashion sense.
49I'm loving the shape of the gown, and the fact that she picked a newcomer to the scene....seems like that's something she likes to do, and I applaud it.
I do however kinda wish the gown's flowers didn't look a bit like TP!
