It's not easy wearing a dress that accentuates — no, dramatizes — your hips, but there are at least two ladies who took the risk. Diane Kruger wore her ivory Giambattista Valli dress in Paris at a movie premiere in November. She accessorized with deep red velvet pumps and a white watch. Voila. Marissa Tomei also wore Valli's daring creation, albeit the black version, to an inaugural ball in Washington. She kept her look monochrome with black satin pumps. It's a toughie to pull off, but who worked it better?

Kanebo
Shiseido
Alexander Wang
neither. they both are soo severe and there's no joy or youth to it...
1Love both of these ladies, but I don't like the dress on either of them. It's just a horrible dress.
2I picked the white but I think they both needed jewels.
3This is just one of those dresses that should just stay on the runway, with the models. But if I have to choose, I think Diane wore it best. (Though IMO, I think she wore it to the wrong occasion!"
4This seems like a silly comparison because they are wearing the dresses in almost the same exact way. Solid color pumps, simple hoop earrings, hair up. I love both of these fashionable ladies but I think soapbox is right, Diane's seems like the wrong occasion. I wouldn't want to sit in a theater seat and crush that skirt.
5I guess Diane, but I voted for Other because I think the dress is just plain hideous. Maybe if it was like a foot shorter it would look better? I don't don't mean to sound offensive/politically incorrect, but the proportions of the dress make both of them look like dwarves.
6Her name is spelt Marisa, not Marissa.
7Neither, they both look like they've shrunk with the weird hemline! The hemline is just so funky. Either bring the hemline down to the floor or up to the knees. Nobody looks good in a high water hemline.
8unflattering on both of them
9I love Marisa but I picked Diane. I think the dress needs to be shorter or something though
10Wow I'm shocked by the comments. I love this dress and I think they both look great. I prefer the white, but Marisa picked the most flattering color for her skin tone so I still voted both.
11Neither - this dress looks like something Maria would wear in The Sound of Music.
12diane wore the dress better
13but the dress isn't that great to start off with.
Althought the full effect with the shoes could be appreciated better in other photos than the one shown here, I think this dress has such a lovely Parisian feel to it that it has to go to Diane. Once again, very few could pull this off but she does it effortlessly.
She had such a Grace Kelly look in the Amica photoshoot by Karl Lagerfeld and this is similar--maybe with a dash of Audrey Hepburn thrown in. (And those are NOT names I'd throw around lightly! Hee.)
14If I had to...Diane.
15Love the dress. Diane looks regal !
16This dress is actually gorgeous but unfortunately does not photograph well from the photographers' angles.
Plum Sykes is wearing the white version in this months Vogue and looks lovely though- its too bad you cant tell from these pictures
17I actually like the dress is both colors, but I agree it needs jewels - a statement necklace would have been good. I think they both look fabulous, and they each picked the right color for their skin tone and hair color. The only thing I prefer is Diane's shoes...
18you know, looking again atthe pictures, they both look like they can't breath...
19i chose diane just because i think she actually looks better in it
20style wise, though, they wore it in similar ways
i can't say i'm a big fan of the dress, though
I love marisa Tomei and Black is alway in.
21I dont know what's wrong with the dress, but both of them look short in it.
22This is unusual. With the camera angle, they do look very short.. Not sure what I think about this one.
23They both look nice but I voted for Diane because the dress doesn't seem to fit Marissa quite right.
24Strangely enough neither of them.. but I do love the dress itself. It's cute. I can't think of anyone who could really make it work though.
25I think none
26Well Diane of course! Not that Marisa looks bad, but Diane looks stunningly elegant! And I love the colour of the shoes!
27Diane. Marissa would have looked better if she had broken up the black with a thick coloured sash or belt.
28I don't like it on either one of them. It's making boob pancakes!
29Diane, if I had to choose.
30I think they both look beautiful, I love the dress
31I choose Diane but I think it's just because her posture is better. It changes the look a lot. I hate her shoes.
32I love this dress! It's so "new look."
33Not sure f it's the angle of the camera, but the dress looks a wee bit too long on Marisa. So I picked Diane.
I am IN LOVE with this dress!
34Very S/S '09 Gareth Pugh silhouettes!
I chose Diane... that white color is fabulous and it looks more tailored and crisp on her.
how come many people hate that dress its original i love it!i choose Diane i like the color on her
35i think marisa is experinecing the uniboob. ladies you gotta let the girls breathe, and that dress is surely suffocating them.
36I think the dress looks better in white.
37Diane
38I saw the black dress on another website, and i love it so much i saved the pic. I actually think it looks best on a petite woman as opposed to the supermodel Gisele type. I'm 5'3" and i would definitely wear it in black.
39I love the cut of the dress and far from being bad for hips I think it'd be great for larger hips as it totally bypasses them and flares out, like an exaggerated A-line.
Saying that I keep wanting to PAINT something onto it...in both cases there's no colour on the women to balance out the severity and structure of the garment. LIPSTICK...look into it!
Marisa looks so washed out - as much as I like black this is just too harsh and would, I think, be a better night look.
Diane can wear white well and the red velvety shoes are cute, but I still keep looking for something to stand out, and nothing really does.
40Ok..so....now that I keep staring at the dress on Marisa what it needs is a chunky, arty, but close-to-the neck statement piece..perhaps in aquas and blues...something. Just 2c.
On Diane I would redo her hair and just go for a totally sleek retro feel and amp up the lips. The shoes aren't enough on their own.
41it might be because i like the white dress better, but i think that diane looks better here.
42a dress like that def. needs coloured shoes.. or coloured... something?? so i picked diane forr sure.
43Diane Kruger has better posture, I think, which makes her look more queenly. Morissa Tomei looks nice too though.
44the white looks like a wedding dress! hahaha
45i like the black dress but yeah accessories were lacking and very much needed
id have to say the dress on the laft, because it still looks graceful and amazing no matter how plain the dress is.
46very audrey hepburn. love it in white!
