We can always count on Karl Lagerfeld to entertain us with his cheeky comments. The designer recently defended fur and now he's speaking out about high fashion. "It's great to see things you may not buy — because you don't have the money — but it is very ugly to think they shouldn't exist because you cannot buy them," he said. "I can be interested in a $20 million diamond I will never buy, without desiring the diamond. If you want only things you can afford, it's boring too." He has a point; we live for runway shows but can't afford most of the pieces. But do you think it's insensitive of him to make this statement in the midst of a recession?

Ever amusing...
1he is couturier and views fashion as art. I completely agree that the area of fashion devoted to artistic expression should not be sacrificed in the recession. I know I'll never be able to afford couture. So what? I'll never be able to afford an authentic Picasso either, doesn't mean I don't love to look.
2I can see where he's coming from but Its the way he worded that. I wouldn't necessarily say its "ugly" to think it shouldn't exist. Its "ugly" to lose your home, possessions, job etc.
3I think he's right. High fashion is art, and just because a lot of people can't afford a piece doesn't mean it shouldn't be made.
4I agree with amofoz. What a very unequal world we live in....
5I don't think anyone has ever looked to Karl Lagerfeld for sensitivity!
6He is 100% right. People need to stop thinking that they should be able to have everything.
