SweetFirefly and Miss Malone - I couldn't disagree more!!! Japan is famous for sushi, thats where it originated... so how is wearing what they are notorious for 'mockery' ? Its basically saying that if someone came to the US and wore a hamburger costume that they would be mocking America!?
People nowadays are just too serious...and believe it or not these accusations are benefiting-not helping end racism!

I agree, Maddi Maye. I think her outfit is a way of celebrating/demonstrating that aspect of Japanese culture. She's not mocking it. In fact, I think it's cool she wore that instead of the rather boring costumes of Ciara and Fergie that you could find anywhere. I usually hate Katy Perry's style, but in this case I think she looks really good!

I'd like to point out that fact that they all look like idiots. But at least Katy made an effort to look pretty. Seriously, what were Fergie and Ciara thinking?

Schoolhouse, I agree with you. I know performance/stage outfits are supposed to be wild, but these are just too silly looking.

Katy, and I don't see anything wrong with her outfit. It reminds me of America's Next Top Model Season 3 when the girls went to Tokyo and dressed similar to this for a photoshoot-- there's nothing wrong about it. In fact, I think it celebrates the culture.

No it doesn't. Katy has been getting trashed in the blogs in Japan since Saturday for wearing that outfit. People at AsianFanatics and Crunchyroll have been ripping her a new one too.

That outfit is the equivalent of a Japanese singer coming here and wearing an outfit made of French fries and burgers. It's insulting to say the least.

Also to add, you may not see it as insulting but in Japan, where people are big on respect, something like this is really insulting to a lot of people to see a foreigner, dressed like this. Many people in Japan feels as if it's mocking them as if the only thing Japan is about is Sushi and Geisha girls.

I give her an A for creativity, and F for stupidity. She was better of just going dressed in a her usual outfit instead of this.

I completely agree with all of you who think Katy Perry's outfit is insulting to Japanese culture. It's like stating London is only famous for fish and chips, the Queen and the Sex Pistols. I would have been ok with her costume (anything is better than a cupcake dress) had she been performing anywhere else in the world, but sushi in Japan? TACK!

I voted for Ciara simply because anyone who can rock a tight, sparkly bodysuit deserves a pat on the back in my books.

As much as I normally like Katy Perry, I also found this to be a mockery of the Japanese culture. I'm sure she meant well, but it's kind of like saying "Hey, Japan, this is all I know about you and it's really all you are anyway!" I sincerely doubt she thought that, but she should have looked at it from all angles. Also, she must have a team of stylists and costume designers - surely at least one person in the group should have notice and pointed it out.

I think people are making a big deal out of this. It's like the time Miley did that pose to "insult" the Chinese community. I'm Chinese and I'm not insulted, other people do it all the time.

I watched the VMAJ 2009, Saturday, the fact that her performance was sub par and the outfit didn't leave many people amused. Especially after BigBang gave her a nice intro and she came out in that outfit. The looks from many of the people in the crowd was not amused and many were outright laughing at her.

Fashionista, just people other people do it all the time doesn't make it any more right. Just means other people are just as silly.
