Harper's Bazaar invented its dual-cover concept in 2001, but it's especially important today since newsstand sales have become as pertinent as advertising revenue. For its July issue, the mag is giving subscribers a fierce fashion cover shot of model Doutzen Kroes, shot by Terry Richardson. But newsstand shoppers will see a completely different cover, one that features a Getty image of Angelina Jolie taken at the LA premiere of Curious Case of Benjamin Button in December 2008. This is the first time Bazaar is using a stock image and its success rate remains to be seen.
"Our readers told us they are completely fascinated by Angelina Jolie. For us, it's about giving readers what they want, when they want it . . . for our subscribers, who desire a more fashion-forward image, we've got the next great supermodel, Doutzen Kroes. Either way, the reader wins," said a spokesperson. So tell me, which cover do you prefer — fashion or celebrity?
Fashion, of course!!
But that is a lovely photo of Angelina.
1Doutzen looks gorgeous! I prefer photo shoots to red carpet shots.
2I think the Angelina cover has more mass appeal. I mean, their goal is to sell magazines.
3Doutzen of course!
4i like when fashion magazines stick to models and not celebrities. However, who isn't infatuated with the Jolie?
Doutzen is a pretty girl, but i think she looks like Denise Richards mixed with Kathy Ireland...i don't think that's a good thing.
5I really like Angelina and it's a beautiful pic, but I agree that fashion magazines should stick with models. Doutzen is gorgeous.
6This is a no brainer question...
DOUTZEN for sure!
Look at Angelina's paparazzi picture, besides Dozen looks like an actress as well, much better than those Holywood tarts!
7I never rally cared about having strictly models for fashion models. I read a lot of complains about it concerning Vogue.
Frankly, a celebrity will end up catching my eye more than a model. With a celebrity I know there will be an article about that person that I might read while the model is just here to pose.
In the end, models or celebrities, isn't an issue to me. I'll only complain about which celebrity they would use.
8'The Next Great Supermodel Doutzen Kroes'
I'm lovin' it! Yay MissDK
9Doutzen for sure!
10Doutzen; I prefer the art aspect of fashion. I couldn't care less about the celebrity gossip.
11DOUTZEN. she's gooooorg! i'm so over angelina. can the world PLEASE move on? she ruined a marriage. she chooses some good movies to act in. she does some humanitarian work (sometimes it doesn't seem sincere). and she has some big lips. GET OVER IT.
12Doutzen Kroes. Gorgeous cover and the perfect fit for Harper's. Angelina's cover just doesn't look appropriate; it has a very tabloid look. If I am buying a fashion based magazine, a tabloid-style is the last thing I would want to see.
13FASHION
14Hahaha #12! Love it! DOUTZEN!
15I guess they are trying to compete with US and Co. - LAME. One of the reasons I pick up this mag is that it's actually filled with fashion.
16i'm a subscriber and got the doutzen version last week. like it - she's one of my favorite models. i'm guessing they added the angelina cover to attract buyers in the news stands? i don't blame them since angelina's one of the biggest (and most powerful according to forbes) celebrities today.
17Oh wow.. it's really disappointing that it's come to this. I generally hate celebrity covers on fashion magazines, especially those like Vogue and Harpers.... and to use a stock image! It looks like a tabloid.
18Wow Angelina Jolie's pic proves that any stick thin wrinkly lifeless mess can look good with the right makeup.
19oh my god doutzen looks so unbelievably stunning at!
20Doutzen, for sure. I miss the days of the model being the cover girl. When I see a celeb on the cover, I instantly think "tabloid" whether it's Vogue or People.
21Whoa Doutzen is giving Angelina some competition there! DK looks like a moviestar... you go girl!
22the Doutzen one...she looks gorgeous and the other pic of Angie is an old one even though she looks good there....
23I'm disappointed that I won't be able to buy the Doutzen cover at a store. I prefer models to actresses on the covers of fashion magazines, and I only buy Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, W, etc. if they feature a model on the front.
24I also don't like that they are using a stock photo of Angelina. It seems so cheap and tabloid-y.
Fashion by far! Doutzen exudes hotness on this cover
25post #12, I couldn't have said it better myself
26bazaar was one of the last fashion magazines worth buying, now it's looking no better than tabloids.
27Fashion! The celeb shot looks like a grocery store tabloid.
28angelina's is too cluttered though i adore the written font at the bottom right hand corner.
29i don't really care if a celeb is on the cover, but to not even do a photo shoot and just use some pic taken by the paparazzi at an event? blah.
30DK cover for sure.
Fashion. It's supposed to be a FASHION magazine, not some stupid tabloid. They even used a paparazzi shot for that cover. It's not even a picture from a photoshoot. Plus that cover has way too much text on it.
31the fashion cover for sure! i'm tired of seeing celebs on the cover of mags sometimes!
32When the cover with Doutzen arrived in my mail yesterday I was SO excited to actually see a model! Then I saw the alternative cover and was like WTF? I completely understand that they have to sell magazines, but it also feels like they're cheating somehow.
33I prefer fashion be fashion.
34Doutzen all the way! I second everybody that said that the Angelina cover looks like it belongs on a tabloid. And if they insist on having actresses instead of models, they could at least do a photoshoot...
35To answer Clew001, I am NOT infatuated with Angelina. To be quite honest, I'm sick of all the Brad and Angelina coverage.
36I am so glad I'm a subscriber, because if I have to see one more magazine with a stupid pic of Angelina covered in amateur graffiti-style writing, I will vomit in my mouth. and Doutzen looks incredible...
37It's not so much that it's a celeb, or that it's Jolie, it's just that whenever a respectable magazine uses a stock image for their COVER, it really turns me off.
38Ok. So I personally like Doutzen on the cover much better. All I have to say it stay in your lane - fashion is fashion and acting is acting....They both look great but Doutzen is more fitting.
39Theres nothing more annoying than celebrities on the cover of fashion mags. Once in a while is okay but really? They have nothing to do with fashion. I love Ang but she has awful style and hasn't contributed to the industry at all.
40fashion!
41if i were to choose a magazine and both had the titles covered, i would choose angelina's. not because one is an actress and the other a model, but because that cover stands out more, tempts me by displaying what's inside and makes me want to read more about it. on the issue of model vs actress-who says an actress can't be a model? or vice versa? at least some of the actresses they put on the covers are more typical to the average woman. ex, eva longoria isn't 6ft, queen latifah isn't size 0. i like the variety.
42i do however remember the jlo obsession and was so sick of seeing her on the cover as almost every magazine around 2001. so i guess i don't care who's pic is on the cover, as long as that person isn't overplayed.
I miss the days when ONLY models were on fashion magazines covers. This Angelina cover looks like Us Weekly or something. Hate it.
43Doutzen Kroes, Supermodels are making a come back on the covers. We love Angelina, but it's great to see the models back on the fashion magazine covers.
