Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has the pick of the litter when it comes to wearing sumptuous designer creations but her selection might be a little more limited now that she's vowed to be more animal friendly. "I do not wear, buy, or own fur or animal skin other than leather or skin of animals raised for feeding purposes. I am not a vegetarian and I don't find it illogical to wear skins of animals whose meat is also eaten." said Bruni-Sarkozy in a recent letter to PETA. Will Carla inspire others to do the same?
Meanwhile, Hermes has just announced it will start breeding its own crocodiles to keep up with the high demand for its iconic handbags. Despite the recession, Hermes produces 3,000 crocodile bags a year, which is not enough for the crazy waiting list — often several years long — of customers. "We cannot face demand. We have massive overdemand. The world is not full of crocodiles." said Hermes chief executive, Patrick Thomas.
Certainly two different views on using animals for fashion. Are you on team Carla or team Hermes?
ew Hermes ew!
1All of those poor crocodiles
How can people overlook that!?
2what hermès is doing is just.. it's just wrong. it goes so far beyond inhumane that it isn't even funny. how can ANYONE support this?
3There are two things that I lust after - Chanel and Hermes. Hermes should come down here to Texas, there are crocs in my backyard that they can HAVE!!!! I know, I'm going to take a lot of flack for what I just said - Just trying to be humorous.
4Yay, Carla! Not only is it kind of sad to see animals killed just for their fur or skin, but the conditions the animals are kept in are often horrific, as is the way they are killed (some are skinned alive).
5yuck, neither. I'm a vegan and don't eat or wear any animals or animal products.
6Although I do love animals, I also really love this Hermes bag. I would adore to have one of these bags hanging up in my closet. It's beyond sheek and it's a very classic style. Carla wears it well.
7She said she's going to give away anything that doesn't fit into the criteria she outlined. So if she's giving away that crocodile (Dior?) handbag... me me me!!!!
I don't see what's so outrageous about what Hermes are doing. If you visit croc farms in Australia they'll show you pits which contain the Versace crocs, the Gucci crocs. The skins have to come from somewhere. As long as they treat the animals well when they're alive and kill them humanely it's just another unpalatable but necessary facet of the fashion industry.
8By the way, is it just me or is the phrasing of the heading a little off. Surly it's Hermes who are anti, and Carla pro?
9The world is not full of crocodiles? THEN STOP KILLING THEM.
also...croc bags are pretty ugly.
10Wow. As if it was so important to own croc bags.Hermes croc bags. Really people are shallow.
11I know this is a serious topic, but I'm so distracted by her shoes that I can't answer.
12I'm so disappointed with Hermes. I used to applaud them for keeping their bags handcrafted despite everyone else doing mass production, but now all the respect is gone.
13Wow, you love animals but you also love Hermes?...sounds like you love bags more than animals dont you think??
I think this is pretty sickening, especially since you can buy FAKE croc that looks almost the same.
It's just a bag...you put stuff in it, I don't see the need for killing animals so we can stuff their skins full of lipgloss!
14I don't see the difference between the use of leather and crocodile skin, as long as the animals are treated well while still alive. But if Hermes starts a croc farm, I think they shouldn't just use the crocodile skin, they should go all the way and make croc steaks too. Otherwise, it would be a waste.
15If people ate the crocodiles' meat and they (the crocodiles : )) were raised and slaughtered humanely, it would be OK. Anything else is just wasteful. Personally, though, crocodile-skin is hideous and synthetic looks almost exactly the same.
16I don't think I have anything fur in my closet lol. But then again I'm a meat eater so I really don't care about animals being killed for their skins, although the treatment when they are alive should be within laws and such.
17I think this dior bag is probably embossed leather, not real croc. so it wouldn't really apply to this specific bag...
18well i'm not a vegetarian and i wear leather, but i would never wear fur because i think it's tacky. if i ever do get a chance to get my hands on a hermes bag in my lifetime though, i won't pass it up.
19I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm actually vegetarian- and to me, killing an animal for the meat, fur, skin, whatever, is all the same. I think it's hypocritical of people to say it's wrong to raise crocodiles for their skin, but ok to raise farm animals and kill them, or ok to go hunting/fishing for sport. My stand is that if crocodiles are being raised, killed humanely and used for whatever reason (no matter how shallow), it's fine and no different from other ways in which we use animals.
20I like Carla, so yay for her
21I think there is a big difference between killing for food and killing for vanity. I like fashion but nothing should die for it.
I find fur farming one of the most horrific things in the world. The animals suffer all throughout their short lives and experience the most painful deaths. The poor things are smashed against the ground to break their backs/shoulders (so they can't get away), their feet are cut off and then they are hung up and have their skins violently ripped off when they are still breathing and for what? So selfish westerners can have a pretty coat? SICK - you'd have to be sociopath to support that kind of thing.
22Go Carla.
I'm vegetarian and I refuse to wear fur, leather, suede, etc. (the only exception is if it's second-hand, hand-me-down, etc. and no money is going towards those who made it).
If you've ever seen the videos of these animals being skinned alive for fur coats, you'd understand (unless you really are a cold-hearted human being, and if you like that sort of thing, then go die).
