Diane von Furstenberg filed a lawsuit against Forever 21 back in March, and now Gwen has followed suit, claiming in her lawsuit that the fast fashion chain has illegally ripped off Harajuku Lovers' designs.
The complaint cites Harajuku's trademark red, white, and black hearts and heart-box designs have begun to appear in nearly identical red, white, and black prints on Forever 21 clothing, handbags, and accessories. The only difference is the wording that accompanies the hearts and Japanese characters: Gwen's line says "Harajuku Lovers" while Forever 21's designs say "Forever Love." Sounds suspicious...

Good for Gwen!
I agree wit Pokemyhontas! Go Gwen
This is going to get very interesting and for a number of reasons. There's a mistaken idea that goes around on the production end of the fashion industry. Basically it's said that if you change a design by 15% you can slide underneath the copyright laws. That may well be but, as an artist, illustrator, and designer, it always chews me up inside. And it does so to the point that I have refused work from clients who have asked me to CAD and "revise" signature work. That being said, I wish Gwen Stefani all of the luck in this and sincerely hope that Forever 21 will become the example.
British Designer Ted Baker should sue the Santa Barbara store ANGL for selling EXACT knockoffs of his Laetitia dress. I mean, its literally the same colors, same pattern, just rayon instead of silk.
There's got to be some sort of copyright for designers. Knockoffs are okay, but not to the point where they are exact or near exact copies of the original, clearly more creative work.
meh. i'm totally on the who cares bandwagon.
If I were her I would have done the same. That's so cheap, using someone else's designs to make money.
It's not as if her designs are so original.
Maybe Forever 21 just wanted to make things similar to designer stuff so us regular folk could afford them? But, I understand Gwen's anger at them copying her...but, those bags are ass ugly so who cares? LOL
I'd be flattered that a retailer wanted to bring my designs to the masses - but they'd be smarter to approach her and work out a deal, a la Kate Moss & Topshop rather than blatantly lifting her designs. Not that it makes it right, but the people who shop at Forever 21 (mostly teens/young women) don't have bottomless pockets for runway fashions. I personally love Oh Deer! shoes which are near replicas of Christian Louboutins!
Gwen Stefani should go for a partnership w/ Forever21 to sell cheaper versions of her harajuku line
License a watered down version - Welcome to the club
who cares is right!! And yes her clothing line is hideous and tacky in my opinion
Forever 21 is NOTORIOUS for ripping off designers.
I agree with vienvien! Even JLo has a cheaper line. Gwen's stuff is WAY too trendy for the price. (but it is still cute)
Perhaps Gwen should watch her back from LeSportsac and their Tokidoki like... I do believe they may have a case against her!
I love Forever 21 and they always have looks that are cheaper. I think Gwen should calm down.
To the people are who caresing. Well you must. Why did you read and spend the energy to comment. Huh?
I absolutely agree with you, studio524. I would be so angry if someone else steals my designs!
I think that her clothing line isn't that amazing (it isn't something that we haven't seen already) and it's expensive, so the idea of pairing to sell a cheaper line is great.
I think that filling against F21 is a great way to protect the work of her and all the people of her design team...
i'm sorry but this bag is way too fugly to copy, even for forever 21. (not saying i don't love forever 21, i do, but we all know there is some ugly stuff in there. this bag included.)
Forever 21 has always ripped off designers; why are the designers just realizing this? I love Forever21 because you can get the look without the same price tag. At the same time I understand the lawsuit because if I was the designer I would do the same. I wouldn't want anyone ripping me off. I don't know who's side I'm on.
Can anyone actually find the purse it is supposedly an identical copy of? i've looked w/ no luck. yes, the logo was obviously ripped from harajuku lovers, but i cannot seem to find a purse that looks like an exact replica

I think that Forever 21 is definitely just trying to reach out to those who love designer clothes but can not simply afford them...I know that when I am a big fan of a certain design or style of clothes, but can't come up with $300 for a silk blouse...and I can go into forever 21 and find one that is very similar, I of course buy the cheaper one...I agree also that I don't LOVE Gwen's line that much myself...but that is besides the point...I think that maybe with this certain piece, Forever 21 might have replicated the design too much, but other than that..I love what the store does..and I think that they should keep doing it!
i was thinking that Forever 21 was getting pretty good at making designer imitations, and i love a good bargin just as much as anyone else, but i understand Gwen's fustration, and hopefully they can come to an agreement.
id be complimented if i wsa gwen. Some people cant afford to spend that much money on her bags. they clearly love the design just dont have enought money to just drop on a purse like tht. Yeah its kinda sh*tty but lifes not fair right? forever 21 makes it easy for girls who dont have a lot of money but love designer wear. they can get similar styles for a way way cheaper price.
Who the hell cares - I mean you have to expect knock offs when fashion is so overpriced now a days!
okay the whole reason for this is because forever 21 is a product development store. The people that work for it look to other designs and on the runways and make replicas of what they see, but the prices are afforable for everyone. I don't really know why she's suing because this store has always been like that, as have many stores. I doubt it will really be that successful.
Its obvious a knockoff, which Im sure they are doing it purposely. I doubt that Gwen is losing money b/c someone will choose to buy something from F21 intead of her line; if you cant afford, then you cant. If you can Im sure somesome would buy the Harajuku Lovers over the F21. Why not buy something similar to it? I cant afford it! I shop at f21!

all i have to say is FINALLLYY!!! my sister shops at Forever 21 and maybe once and a while i do too... and I do notice some exact knockoffs there...
has it ever occur to you guys that maybe the reason why Gwen Stefani created Harajuku Lovers is because it's cheaper than her L.A.M.B line??? to me... i see it as Harajuku Lovers is cheaper line of LAMB> Come on.. who can really afford LAMB at regular price??
I think I'm gonna go shopping now... take advantage of the "bargain" as long as I can...
i know this was bound to happen with forever21, but who cares about their knockoffs it saves alot of $$ for people like mee
This is so funny. I was just at the mall, and passed by Forever 21, and thought how much their designs reminded me of her stuff, but thought it was me being crazy.
gwen's bags are ultra tacky, eww.
i love forever 21, and i liked gwen until i heard she was suing the store. i think it's really lame, excuse forever 21 for wanting to make something that's actually affordable instead of being ridiculously overpriced. and it's not like her ass sat there and came up with the design herself, let's be real here. She probably snagged it from someone else.
i think that gwen and dvf have every right to being suing f21. 1) because they didnt even attempt originality, its almost an exact replica 2) because their products are of poor quality and if i were i designer, i would not anyone to attach my name to something that is poorly made and 3) the clothes and accessories are made in sweatshops and if your a designer who pays extra money so that human rights violations do not occur within your line, why should you allow some chain to rip off your designs and save a buck only to commit them?
I love Forever 21, but I've seen quite a few things in their store that are somewhat cheap knock offs of more pricey stuff. It's good for the average Jane like myself who can't afford the real deal, but bad for the designers who put the effort into it. Forever 21 can be very odd about their stuff, what I mean by that is. A friend and I were in front of their store one day and I took a picture of her. The manager came out and yelled at us. Her reason for this was "these clothes are all original designs, you are not permitted to photograph and steal them." I told her "I wasn't intentionally taking a picture of the clothes in their store I was just taking a picture of my friend and that if I really wanted to steal a design then I'd just fork over the cash to buy the shirt and really study it." She had no response to this so we left.
good, i have never seen forever 21 carry those styles before..i have only seen a few designers but mainly from japan designers. So jen got her design from japan and now forever 21 is copying her. I always thought forever 21 was the same as gap and all those brands that just follow trends instead of innovate.
I saw the picture of the purse and knockoff, and sad to say, but the shirt is cuter. Oh well. Good luck, Gwen, if that's what helps you sleep at night.
hmmm wow...that sux...GOO GWEEEN!!
I HATE PPL WHO COPY..sheesh!
i know it's about principle.. not money. but in the end, that's what it really comes down to. if gwen didn't give a rats ass, she'd let it be. but people like her have so much bank.. geez. who cares! and if you REALLy think about it, seriously. how many people do you think REALLy has bought that tacky bag... and how many of thosepeople wouldve dropped like 2 bills for the REAL thing.. get over it!
Good for Gwen!!!
Gwen didn't even really design it. She put probably no work into making the bags.
I agree with Mintie about LeSportsac and the Tokidoki line...they're pretty similar. I do think that a design shouldn't be out and out copied, though, which to me includes a design that is so close that it could be mistaken for each other. However, it happens all the time. I don't really know if she has a case against them...I guess that's for the courts to decide. I often wonder how companies get away with it, though. I can't remember the name of the one that copies famous red carpet dresses...ABS or something like that? Anyway, every year after the Oscars I wonder why they don't get sued. Maybe someone here knows?
although i do agree that she has the right to file suit, this is fashion. there are knock-offs everywhere now. even in home goods.
I just bought a Harajuku Lovers bag yesterday and I love it because it really does remind me of Tokyo. Good for Gwen.
