Hussein Chalayan is a designer to watch, and not just because his runway show featured self-undressing clothes. Yes, you heard me right: The Spring 2007 show from this Turkish-Cypriot designer at Paris Fashion Week featured apparel that opened and fell away on its own, leaving models standing on the runways in the buff. It was a technical marvel created by a special effects team who worked on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
But amazingly, this parade of bells, whistles, and nudity didn't upstage the rest of Chalayan's collection. The clothes were a futuristic frenzy of foil-like fabrics, saucer-rimmed hats, and dresses constructed out of bubbles and beading. 6Some of those dresses are beautiful. But, the whole show sounds kind of gimmicky. Shouldn't the collection stand on its merits? Call me old school.
