Vena Cava always does things a little differently. Both in show presentation and clothing inspiration; that's why they are a growing fashion force. Vena Cava was at Milk Studios — where numerous designers are showing this time around — and I arrived promptly on time because I heard rumblings the designers were doing a runway show in lieu of their usual presentation style. They did both. It started as a runway show, models perched themselves around and on ladders, then it turned into a presentation — the best of both worlds. The Fiery Furnaces performing live were an awesome accompaniment to the modern, exotic collection. From marbelized prints, to laser cuts, to hints of skin, Vena Cava loves to play. But in a very sophisticated manner. A dress may be baby doll, but it's far from goo-goo-gaa-gaa in a sexy black-rayon jersey and metal safety-pin camisole. The palette was moody — black, brown, grays — but a punchy orange saved it from somber. The orange cupra jersey asymmetrical dress made my heart skip. Lisa and Sophie, the hotshot design duo, continue to experiment with separates. Dresses are always unique, but skirts, jumpsuits, shorts, busters, leggings, and tees were thrown into the mix. Accessories weren't forgotten; stylist Kate Young completed looks with Persol shades, Robert Clergerie shoes, and Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. jewels. Vena Cava — where there's smoke, there's fire.
