bringmeup - I'm also 5'3" and I actually have a long torso. I was skeptical with the whole high waisted thing but when I tried them on I realized it actually made me look taller and fit nicer then my usual low-rise things.
alibella - I'm in college, so I wore it to go to class. I would also wear it to go to the mall or movies. Wouldn't wear it to work or to a club, it's too extreme on both ends.
