We all have some body parts we love to show off, and some we can't help but cover up. The good news is there are solutions to most fashion problems! I have had a few girls vent to me about having thick ankles and wondering what shoes they should wear to help slenderize the situation. Here are three styles that are all different and help thin out thick ankles. Hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more suggestions!
T-Strap Heels
This shape draws the eye in and down, so ankles appear leaner. The opposite of a t-strap would be a slingback, which make ankles seem rounder.

Mary Jane Flats
These are the best kind of flats to slim ankles because the strap across the width of the foot makes the rest of it appear skinny by comparison.
Platform Pumps
A chunky platform adds some heft to your sole and ends up creating a more balanced proportion.

La Redoute
Kind of the same as the t-strap, but I've found that things that wrap around your ankles help as well. Great post!
1I have a friend that will want to read this, she's asked me about this before and I wasn't sure what to tell her.
I've got a serious crush on those Miu Miu mary janes...
2Hmm this is interesting. I have chunky ankles and I abhor t-strap shoes because they make them look bigger and love slingbacks. I must agree on the platform shoes though; my platform Loub's always look great on.
3I agree with all the shoes but the ones that buckle around the ankle. I've found those always make my ankles look thicker. Also, I've heard that "cankles" can be improved by strengthening the calve muscles, because that muscle group actually connects all the way down to the foot. So, toning the lower leg muscles will inevitably tone up the ankles too. It's helped my ankles
4Katie Holmes has thick ankles...so whatever she wears looks really good, I've seen her in some of these styles.
5yay mary janes! love those
6I suffer from thick ankles and love loafer type court shoes. The platform you outlined above are also a good choice. I never wear anything with a strap so the first lots of shoes are a complete no no for me. I like Mary Janes as well but the strap has to be very low down in the shoe.
7"Cankles and Staps?" No TH'ANKLES!!
8I DONT HAVE THICK ANKLES
9OMG I
those AK platforms!
My ankles have never been slim even when I was stick-thin, just the way they were built, so thanks Fab!!
10I thought ankle straps were a no-no because they cut your leg off at the ankle and made it look shorter.
11The British What Not to Wear ladies gave advice saying you should not wear straps with Cankles - they said something great about it looking like you were "strangling sausages." Eversince hearing that, its all I can think of and I now keep my thick ankles out of them.
12i love the t-strap shoes....even though i have the opposite problem, of tiny ankles.
13yeah, i have to agree with some of the ladies here, t-strap shoes do not make your angles look slimmer. also they shorten your legs and make them look stumpy. nelly furtado keeps wearing them, and they look horrible b/c she has bigger legs.
14Hey gals! Just wanted to chime in on the ankle strap debate. Depending on how thick your ankles actually are, the t-strap is different than an ankle strap. The t-strap creates a line moving down the foot and as long as you can hook the strap around the ankle you should be good to go. But if you're not comfortable with it, you know your bod best! xo
15It's also good to keep in mind that there is a difference between thick ankles and cankles. I have thick ankles, but that's because I have large ankle bones and prominent tendons. When straps hit in the right place, they help slenderize my ankles, and in other places, they just draw attention to how thick and knobby they are. I do agree that straps on a cankle are probably not the way to go, but depending on your individual ankles and they individual shoes, the advice here could work.
16i wish der was a way to make big feet look smaller
17oh goodness i LOVE t-bars...they just look good on everyone!!
18Wow thanks for this post because I have such thick ankles. I find when I gain any weight, the first place it goes is my ankles. I've had to get rid of so many shoes cause of how horrible they look with my thick ankles. I agree that strappy shoes are better left to those with thin ankles, no matter how cute they are.
19thanks för the post, I have fat ankels...
20cute shoes for anyone. i have the opposite problem though - ankles that are too thin - the ankle straps are usually too big!
21I have cankles- not fat, just no definition, and I say stay away from T-straps, straps, anything! It never looks right. Strangling sausages is the perfect metaphor!
22The t-straps really do work... I have MAJOR cankles and yet I saw that pair of Nine West T-straps a few months ago and had to try them on. I thought they would look horrible because anything with a strap around the ankle just draws attention to my cankles. BUT for some reason they made me look frickin fabulous. Fab I'm so glad you explained why this happened - the vertical line draws the eye. So true!
23Great post, thanks a lot! I've never thought that t-straps could slim the ankle, I've always avoided even looking at them for fear that I'd fall in love with a pair that wouldn't look good on me. Thank you!!!
24great post! i love them all.
25I think the 3rd pair is nice.
26good to know..thanks!
27Actually, slingback shoes may slim your ankles out because they expose your heel, thus lengthening your leg.
Tips on cankles: To get skinnier ankles you need to STRETCH your calves, NOT strengthen them and add even more muscle to your leg. I am a ballet dancer, so I can tell you that stretching your calves out for even a few minutes a day can keep your ankles slim no matter how much leg-work you do.
Stretching Exercise for Calves and Ankles
281. Take a normal step back, but keep one foot in front.
2. Bend that front knee, and keep your back leg entirely straight.
3. When you feel a stretch in your calves, stop and hold it for at least thirty seconds.
4. Repeat on other leg.
I have to admit, the two things I would change on my body would be my kanks and my feet. I wear size 10 shoe and on top of it,I have thick ankles that I can't help but get self-conscious about!! ahh its annoying but o well.
