During our interview with Rachel Roy, we talked to the designer about growing up in the Bay Area (Monterey), and the differences between East and West Coast life. Interestingly, Rachel described the East Coast as more segregated compared to the West:
"I grew up in the Bay Area and went to college on the East Coast. Things were quite segregated, and I wasn't into that. I'm only 35 — so it's not like we're talking many years ago — but I wasn't used to it because I grew up around Samoans, African-Americans, and Filipinos. You go to a club based on the music you like, not based on the kind of people you want to be around. I kind of went into a culture shock when I moved to the East Coast.
I try to bring back that laid-back, hippie-chic attitude that the Bay Area has to my business because I've interned at so many places in fashion where it can be quite anal. But I also love New York. I love that it's the closest city we have to Europe, so that's a part of me, but thank God I'm from an area that keeps me out of it."

She is waaaay off on NYC being like a European city. I would say it's an international city but not european, it's common knowledge that major cities in Europ like London and Paris have a river that divides it or runs through it. Boston is much more European in style/structure of the city as I think is Seattle.
I'm drawing a blank but there are a few others not too many though.
1: Where have you been recently that you liked or were surprised by?
A: Recently I went to Montreal. I liked it because it reminded me a little of Europe. Something that struck me is there are so many good-looking people there. Everyone is very fashionable. I've been all around North America twice (in 2008). It's incredible to see so much variation from coast to coast. I love that being a singer/songwriter includes lots of travel.

Oh, and Rachel Roy sounds inarticulate here. I always thought we had better schools in the east coast (both public and private).
3This chick just needs to get out more, it seems.
4She doesn't sound very intelligent, or maybe it is the context of the interview.
