It's no secret that the era of the supermodel is over. Currently we have only Kate, Naomi, and Gisele. But even these ladies are celebrities in their own right. Kate just unveiled her latest collection for Topshop, Naomi recently released a new fragrance, and Gisele has been off designing shoes.
Nowadays, the only place you can see models is on the runway and ad campaigns. Recently, however, ad campaigns have become inundated with celebrities: Scarlett for Louis, Keira for Chanel, Sienna for Tod's. Adding more fuel to the fire, WWD is reporting that Jennifer Connelly will be the face of Balenciaga this Spring and Victoria Beckham may be Marc Jacob's muse. While I love these two ladies, I've been missing the good ol' days of the supermodel. Am I the only one?

celebrities are everywhere and i am so sick of seeing their mugshots..i want to see "real" models in magazines, ads and covers. i think the onlu recognizable models these days are the victoria secret models but even they can't get a magazine cover.
1I agree with you, Artsygirl - I remember reading an article a few years ago when the celeb-craziness began saying it was harder and harder for models to find jobs. Now that's true more than ever...celebs are on every magazine cover, including high fashion rags like W, Vogue, etc. It's ridiculous!
Actually, this month's Cosmo has an unknown model. I wonder if that'll be a regular thing.
2when actors act and models model we have twice the people to write about.
3Actors try to take over everything.
Remember when animated movies didn't have a whole bunch of actors doing the voices? It use to be people whose profession was just doing different voices. Now it's actors. I think that started when Robin Williams did the voice of the genie in Aladdin for Disney. The same goes for modeling too. Don't those actors make enough money acting? leave the cartoon voices and the modeling to other people.
Sorry to go off on a bit of a tangent
4I agree with you Meg, maybe the actors are cheaper to hire because they want the publicity more than the money.
5Yes, yes, yes!
6Some of them do annoy me, but in general, I don't care. And as much as I don't like Sienna, I DO LOVE her ads for Tod's! I just think she looks amazing in them. Maybe bella should tell us how to get her makeup look! hint hint
7I understand being a model for their own lines (ie Penelope Cruz and her sister for the their line for Mango)but I kind of feel bad for models that they can't get jobs- specially the big time campaigns.
Sienna annoys me too but I also like her ads.
8I don't know... I like some celeb modeling ads but I think it's better to have real models. Celebrities are everywear. Models are models for a reason, they have the ideal bodytype for showcasing clothes. Not all celebs do but get ads anyway. Oh well. I just hope that Victoria Beckham - Marc Jacobs rumor isn't true, that's supposed to be my job! haha I wish.
9Sick of celebrities!! I long for the old days of supermodels. They were awesome. Models nowadays cannot even compare to those girls. They are boring and some of them aren't attractive at all. EEK!!
10Very sick of seeing their faces. They are everywhere. Magazines hawking everything from diamonds to whatever shaving cream that Alyssa Milano endorses. I understand that the companies who hire them bear responsibility, but the actors/singers just come off as greedy putting their faces and names on everything.
11I like supermodels better, bring them back!!
12I like a little of both......some of the celebs are kind of trashy. They all want to show way too much clevage and we all know it is sooooo fake. The super models are more real.....they know big fake boobs don't make your clothes look very good. Some celebs do have a nice sense of style like: Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie. Pamela Anderson is the modern day Dolly Pardon want to be. The only difference is Dolly has talent....I think Pamela only wears bikini tops. Bring back the day of class......are there any Audrey Hepburn's out there anymore??????
13i do prefer models modeling. HOWEVER, i think there are very few actors who could pull it off. for instance, i think jennifer connelly could be fantastic for balenciaga. however a prime example that sort of irritates me is that victoria beckham doesn't exactly fit marc jacobs' brand, neither in her physical appearance nor in her own style. in cases like that when their celebrity and not their compatibility with the company is the primary concern, it upsets me.
14Yes I am! Celebs get enough coverage in their everyday lives - why not let models do their job and what...MODEL! I don't want to see the same tired celeb faces in every ad, sorry.
15Everyone is given one talent - one thing that they're better than everyone else at, and a bunch of things they're great at but not as great. For some, it's acting, for other's it's singing. So, what are the models to do when those who have that as their "second-best" talent are taking over the industry?
16I wish models they would bring the models back. I don't mind celebs (like for their own line) however I don't take a collection as serious when I see a star in the ad. The only celebs I really like modeling are Scarlett and Keira. I wouldn't mind Posh for MJ however I miss seeing models in ads.
17Seriously what was Marc Jacobs thinking when they hired Dakota Fanning. That was the weirdest pairing ever for me
18as much as everyone loves celebs, models are models for a reason and they're good at what they do (though i think they'd do it better if they ate a little more). bring back the supermodel!
19yes i agree wit u..its annoying. ter taking the models jobs.
20No! If they can model, let them. If not, don't let them.
21The line between celebrity and model blurred some time ago. I really wish models that reflect the real sized women not size 0, 1 or 2, would be on the runways.
22I just saw an ad for Louis Vuitton with Stefi Graf and Andre Agassi laying down together. I did not find it appealing at all. I showed it to my husband and told him that it was ridiculous and they were incorrectly casted for the ad.
I believe the real models should be brought back. I do like Charlize Theron in ads though...but she used to be a model.
23cleo magazine here in australia has stopped putting celebs on their cover and have decided to revert only models. i think this is a fresh 'change' and gives a diff take on a magazine. especially on fashion mags since that's wat models are for. to model the clothes. to present to an everyday reader about fashion.
24Nope!
25But poor models, who don''t get any jobs...
yes! there is a diff. b/t models & actresses/singers.
26Well, it's really about business, I think. The designers know that they make more money and get more attention from celebrities wearing their designs. Some of them owe their careers to celebs wearing their gowns, etc. Therefore, they're going to use them for their ad campaigns too. As for Jennifer Connelly, she was a very early supporter of Nicholas Ghesquire of Balenciaga (it was his beige dress she wore when she won her Oscar). She has been a supporter of him from the beginning, and they are friends. Notice that she constantly wears Balenciaga, especially to more important events. I am not surprised one bit that she's in his campaign, she's already his muse. But doing things like this helps them build relationships with celebrities that are their bread and butter. That being said, I do get sick of it sometimes and wouldn't mind the models coming back....but I don't think this is going to change anytime soon.
27all these actresses should stick with acting and let the models do the modeling.
28It seems this question is asked almost every month, its only phrased differently.
I really don't care, I'm more bothered by the fact that actresses or models that are representing brands look so bony and if they're not too skinny then they basically all look alike.
But I do agree that actresses are well actresses for a reason, while models are paid to be models. I mean has anyone seen that Keira Knightley commercial? That thing is terrible. It makes me cringe every single time.
29Well, I'm gonna go against what most people say here, and say that I prefer actresses to models. The main reason for that is they bring different body shapes to ads and whatever they are modeling. My body type isn't anything like a models, I'm 5'4", and there are actually celebrities that are this height (or shorter).
I completely disagree that models are the ideal shape to show of clothes. Women with curves look great in clothes. People of average height or even shorter can look just as good in clothes as tall people, it just depends on the clothes.
When the people wearing clothes in ads have bodies more like normal people (or at least different to the model 'ideal'), designers will have to start designing clothes for different bodies. And I think that is great!
30they all look so differnt in the adds, you never wether its actually a model or a celeb. i don't like the NEW look replacing models with celebs. i like how the old models were all very pretty and that the were the ones who showed off the clothes and then that got handed down to the celebs. but now all the celebs are taking over the original 'models job,' i mean yes kate moss is a celeb but shes a model so it works, i say keep the models strictly models
31xx
there are still plenty of campaigns that hire models: prada, d&g, hermes, and whilst chanel may have keira, it's only for perfume, not for their main clothing/accessories campaign.
Some celeb campaigns do nothing for the company, scarlett for lv I do not find appealing, or the olsens for badgley mishka(mismatch there!) but others are just great, and Sienna for Tods is an example,
There are plenty of models getting work: Daria Werbowy, Sasha Pivovarova, Agyness, Gemma Ward, Lily Donaldson... I really don;t think they are complaining much, there are always very few models that are succesful, the rest are there to fill the runways
32i totally agree, bring back the models! And back to couture houses to make fashion, not paris hilton and such....
33miss_glitterati took the words right out of my mouth. I'm 5'2" and like to see fashions on petite women, and it seems this only happens when the model is a celebrity. When I see clothes on a supermodel like Gisele, what it tells me is that I can't wear the brand's clothing even though I'm thin, even if I hem the sleeves and legs, because the bust points and waistline will be in the wrong place. But if the clothes look okay on Jessica Simpson, it might be worth going to the store and trying them on.
34I dunno, supermodels just seemed so high class and perfect and super skinny. Celebrity actress and actors are more like "us" (if that makes sense)...
35we need real models back asap!
36we need real models back asap!
37I would like to see a return to more models. I'm fairly satisfied with seeing celebrities as models for makeup ads, I'm quite fond of those. But celebrities for other products... I could care less sometimes. But where I would really like to see more models is on the covers of magazines. Sometimes, I'm disappointed with magazines that feature a celeb on the cover and then give just a small box on how their stylist styled them on the inside along with a line about their new TV show/movie. I'm expecting an article about that person. In such instances, a model would have done the job just as well.
38Sometimes I have a hard time believeing that certain actors and actresses actually wear or use the product they are advertising. Mostly because of how they are in real life. I see photos of how they dress and look normaly in paparazzi pictures... with models it's a bit more believeable (as long as the model isn't a huge celeb themselves.
39Supermodels need to come back!
40Has anyone noticed that the fashion mags are trying very hard to turn the models they use into supermodels? How many times can we look at a picture of Caroline Trentini jumping in mid-air? Or articles about Agyness Dyen in every other month's issue, plus seeing her as the rep for several fashion houses? I think the biggest fashion editors would LOVE to get away from pre-fab Hollywood celebrity, as long as the consumer will buy into the Anna Wintour-created celebrity...and all the profits it may create for the particular publishing company that discovers the "it" girl.
41i'd rather see lots of anonymous models than celebrities or supermodels like the ones you named
42I'm actually quite sick of celebrities lately. Our media is saturated with them....I have to admit though, I really like the TOD's ads with Sienna Miller
43And YES! I aree with JessNess...
Seeing Dakota Fanning being all serious and moody in Bazaar and Elle in a Marc Jacobs ad was quite odd. I was watching Looney Tunes when I was her age
44at times yes...overload!
45As much as I hate seeing actors taking modeling jobs... I liked the Dakota Fanning adverts. They were quirky. Very Mar Jacobs.
46Beauty sells. Celebrities are just as beautiful as models so why not use them to sell the product? If the shoe fits, MARKET IT!
47Bring back the supermodels!
48i like it better when supermodels do the modeling. It's unfair how celebs take their spotlight and it's sad how designers use the celebs to model in their campaigns just so more people will take notice. It's quite effective but the models can do so much better ♥
49That's what I like about Vogue Paris they always put models on the cover (however lately there are celebrities on it as well...). I am sick of all those celebrities without style, who don't look modelish at all on covers of magazines pretending to be a supermodel! I prefer Coco Rocha, Caroline Trentini or Behati!
