Talking about fashion and not mentioning tartan is like talking about fine dining and not bringing up wine. The fabric is an eclectic essential in high fashion, and Jean Paul Gaultier would agree.
Tartan: Romancing the Plaid by Jeffrey Banks and Doria De La Chapelle ($41) tells the story of one of fashion industry's favorite fabrics. It starts with highlighting its humble beginnings and follows through to its current status as an emblem of high fashion and luxurious taste. The book also profiles designers, like Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, and Burberry, who have incorporated tartan in their work.
Plaid may not be prevalent in your wardrobe, but knowing about its power in fashion can't hurt.

Plaid has never been a fave of mine. It's okay.
2On one hand, 'plaid' reminds me of my private school in junior high, and on another hand, 'tartan' makes me think of my Scottish friend. Even though they are the same, I like the pattern, as long as it doesn't go overboard.
3I'm Scottish but I hate tartan, I'd never ever wear it, and I hate men in kilts!
4I'm not found ok kilts either but I LOVE plaid.
5I absolutely love tartan and plaid. One of the first pieces I plan on making for myself once I master the art of sewing is a tartan dress with black tulle underneath.
