Just this week I had my first holiday freak out when I realized I'd totally forgotten about end-of-year tipping. I don't have that many people that provide me services throughout the year but where would I be without my faithful dog walker and fabulous hairdresser? I certainly wouldn't be as Fab. So here's a little guide to answer those emergency tipping questions. The queen of etiquette herself, DearSugar, has one for you too!
- Dog groomer: 25% of one session
- Dog walker or sitter: A bottle of great hand cream or one week's pay.
- Apartment building superintendent: $50-200. (Tip less if you tip throughout the year).
- Apartment doorman/concierge: $10-$80 or more each, depending upon building. Those who serve you more should get a bigger tip.
- Apartment building handyman: $15-$40 each
- Maid: One week's pay — if you use a service and never know who is cleaning, don't tip at all.
- Teacher: $25-$100. A gift certificate is always appropriate. If you know the teacher's hobbies or interests, then a gift certificate would be nice.
- Baby sitter: One night's pay, plus a small gift from your child.
- Full-time nanny: One week to one month of pay based on tenure, plus a small gift from your child.
- Day care service: $25-70, plus a small gift from your child.
- Hairdresser/stylist: 50% of one session
- Shampooer at the salon: $10
- Manicurist/pedicurist: 50% of one session
- Massage therapist: 50% of one session
- Personal trainer: $60-$100 upon reaching goal, or 50% of one session

I have no one to tip this year...
1I have an issue with the hairdresser tip - if my hair costs me $400 with cut & highlights, I am supposed to tip $200???
2Yea I don't really have anyone to tip as well. Well my hairstylist, but I have been putting that off because I needed money for Christmas!
3I just got my first haircut with a new stylist a few days ago. I only tipped him a normal amount (a little over 20%), because I figured holiday tipping was for established relationships. Plus I wanted to wait and see if I liked his work after I shampooed and styled it the next day, so I didn't want to encourage him if the cut was bad. I think that makes sense, right?
4hboogie, I think you were right. I wouldn't holiday tip a brand new stylist either...maybe $5 or $10 over normal, but that's it if at all.
5Thanks for these tipping "tips"!
6errr. wow.. i didnt know that.. i mean, i think id be more than broke if i actually had all these ppl to "tip".. errr.

8Always tip your server and/or waistress at the least 20%

10how much should I tip my mailman and garbage men?
11Hi kurlyq! I would leave a little card with $10 for those guys!
12pssh.... I dont have that relationship with anyone
13I always leave an expensive bottle of wine in my mailbox for my maillady because she's always bring packages up to the door and we've talked more than the usual hello.
