Did I ever mention how un-fab it is to tip poorly? I try to tip well all the time but when the holidays roll around I too forget what the standards are. Afterall, this Prada
French Purse Wallet, $290, could use a little workout. Here is my FabSugar Guide to Holiday Tipping:
- Teacher: $25-100. A gift certificate is always appropriate. If you know the teacher's hobbies or interests, then a gift certificate would be nice.
- Baby sitter: One night's pay, plus a small gift from your child.
- Full-time nanny: One week to one month of pay based on tenure, plus a small gift from your child.
- Day care service: $25-70, plus a small gift from your child.
- Apartment building superintendent: $50-200. (Tip less if you tip throughout the year).
- Apartment Doorman/concierge: $10-80 or more each, depending upon building. Those who serve you more should get a bigger tip.
- Apartment building handyman: $15-40 each
- Maid: One week's pay - if you use a service and never know who is cleaning, don't tip at all.
- Shampooer at the salon: $10
- Manicurist/pedicurist: 50% of one session
- Hairdresser/stylist: 50% of one session
- Massage therapist: 50% of one session
- Personal trainer: $60-100 upon reaching goal, or 50% of one session
- Dog groomer: 25% of one session
- Dog walker or sitter: A bottle of great hand cream!

I tip my hairdresser very generously during the year....I don't feel under any pressure to tip more just because it is Christmas...this would see like a fake gesture...she knows she is appreciated.
I do not have a trainer, a dog walker or a nanny but if I could afford all those maybe I could afford to tip them all....bah humbug
1I think you can tell a lot about a person how they tip (or don't). I like to take care of people whose services I use and rely on all the time (ie, my manicurist, my favorite fitness instructor) And I think the holidays are a great time for you to be able to show your appreciation.
2We usually leave a half rack of beer for the garbage men. Everybody in Hawaii does that, but nobody on the mainland seems to.
I used to tip the mailman when I was selling on eBay and he did a lot for me.
I didn't know we were supposed to buy something for teachers.
We went in for
the Christmas party and everyone had gifts for the teachers.
I felt like such
a noob.
This is little man's first year in school at this time.
I still felt horrible.
3Other than that, though, I'm with Boogie. I always tip my stylist well, I don't do an extra Christmas tip. She doesn't do an extra Christmas cut. LOL
4Id like to hear what Atox has to say about holiday gifts for teachers. My mom si a teacher and while the thought is great, so many moms gave crappy gifts that were senseless and totally re-gifted. Like whacky platters and stuff. A teacher needs a gift cert. for a manicure or something.
But Jen--Its not necessary to give gifts. At least around here, a teacher only gets 3-5 gifts per holiday from her class. At least thats what my mom got and her kids love her.
5That all seems very generous and kind to me and a very nice gesture esp to your postman who I would not think to tip....in the UK we are not so tip friendly as ya'll
6Jen, what did you sell on ebay?
7we have to tip teachers?weird. cos i'm a teacher myself, and i dun think tipping is appropriate, at least in my society..
8Retail, like a gift, not money. Thatd be borderline in appropriate and awkward.
9I would NEVER tip my mailman. My neighborhood has TONS of problems with the mail. I've filed complaints with my local P.O. on three separate occasions, and there's a thread on the community message board that's miles long, all about people who live near me never getting their mail.
When I signed up for pet insurance for the Baz, they sent me my membership packet, but it got returned to them because my post office said that MY STREET DIDN'T EXIST. Mind you, I live in one of the largest cities in the US, on a numbered street which is probably a hundred blocks long. It's like saying that 5th Avenue in NYC doesn't exist!
Sorry to go off on a tangent there.
10Oh I made a small fortune on ebay...I was TOTALLY obessed with selling stuff on there...and watching the frantic bidding during the final moments....I sold a lot of items my ex-boyfriend had got me as I could not bare to be around his belongs....the ebayers were very grateful...shoes, bags, clothes etc etc
11Crispy - I used to sell kids clothes on eBay and books on Amazon. I'm glad you said that about your mom. I felt really
when I saw the gifts all lined up. But there *are* three teachers in his class and if
each person brought one for each of them, then come to think of it probably only about 4 people brought gifts.
12Sounds nice, JK! I dont think I have anything anyone else would want. Although I am envious of those who come up with a great idea and take it to the bank. Like the people who sell snow online and the crazy things like selling ghosts and trading a red paper clip up for a house. Ive talked about this before, so I wont beat a dead horse, but really--I need an idea to make me millions mwhahaha.
13Jen, oh I see. Yeah, my mom would get chocolates or some baked cookies, hand lotions, small nice little things. But it was never expected at all, so dont feel bad! Im sure they were just mothers overcompensating for their children acting up in class.
14I was considering selling my textbooks on half.com (which is linked to ebay, but you can sell books on it) Just bc they are so expensive and I have NO use for them now. But I was always scared to be a seller. Any advice Jen, Boogie?
15BS-I do that every semester!
16Do it, Blonde!! You can make some decent money with textbooks especially. You'll do better if you wait until the time when people are buying them for class - whenever that is. And, be sure you know how much each book will cost to mail before you price them!
17Crispet1...don't be put off...people buy all kinds of crap...I sold body lotion on there before that I got very cheap from Thailand and sold it for a profit
18You do crispy! Is it complicated?!
19Advice....? start the bidding very cheap...I would start mine at 0.99 then people think they are getting a bargin and keep bidding when they are out bid. I once put on a Leather Jacket at 0.99 and it sold for £60.
20BS-With half.com, where Ive sold my books for the past 3 yrs (uh, my bf to be exact, teehee), you can post them up there and they stay up there until they sell. Its not like ebay where you only have 7 days. So Id get them up in the next week or so, so when people start buying for next term, youre set.
Its pretty easy, Im sure editions of your book are already up there, so you can decide how to price your books in comparison with the others.
21JK-Thats hilarious about selling the lotion for a profit. NICE! And also, its so true about starting the bidding real low. I should look into this a big more... What can I get rid of?
22Yea, that's what I was curious about. How do I find that out. And I would list the shipping price separately, right?
23OK, you go to the site and enter the ISBN (the number under the barcode), and then it takes you to the postings of the different books. Or you can search by title, but theres so much there it gets confusing. Then the books are organized by use, like never used, good condition, etc. When you post a book you decide what shipping should be. Most books are $5-8 I think, and you make a bit of a profit from that too because you usually dont use all of the money to ship the book.
24Bidding low is a great tactic but like with anything it is a risk as it may go for less than you hoped....the way to cover yourself is to charge more for the postage and packaging
25Yeah I see that done a lot. Haha. A classmate was just discussing how she got this great poster sized canvas painting for an awesome price, but she was like, why was shipping $50!?!?
26Smart Ebayer whoever got away with that
27Cool, thanks Cripsy!
28I think she said it was from Australia though (and we are in the US). So I didnt think it was THAT crazy.
29ok...that makes more sense
30Sure, BS. GL with selling the books. I make back mostly all the money I spent on the books, which is great because at Buybacks, you get squat. But I have to warn you, if you have the last edition of a book, like they are about to come out with a new one, and I dont know how youd know about that, sometimes they get hard to sell online because people opt for the newer edition. But you can just drop the price a wee bit because honestly, depending on the topic, all the editions are the same with minor changes.
Anyways, how your finals go?
31Yea that's true. Then ther's people like me who will buy the older edition so I can pay less. Good point tho. Finals were good. The one I thought would be cake ended up being the killer. Go figure! haha I'm just glad I'm done for now.
Did
you have finals yet?
32Yes, I finished on Tuesday night. I feel free as a bird. Im working full time through the break. I assume you are continuing to do the same, correct?
33Yay for you!
Yes of course. I work all the time. Some winter break right?!
34Yeah I know. If I get one day off to ski, I will be happy.
35Nice! I wanted to try to fit in a skiing trip during one weekend. Sounds like fun!
36I'll have to check out half.com!
37Crispy, yeah, teachers don't usually expect any sort of gift. And I think I'd be rather insulted if someone gave me money (just my personal feelings on it) But when gifts are given, especially if they were picked out by the student, that has meaning and usually makes me all teary eyed (I freaked the kids out in class when I started crying on my last day and they all had made me a book that was very similar to Dr. Suess's "Oh the places you'll go") Or if a gift certificate to a teacher supply store is given, that is always much appreciated. So do not feel bad at all Jen, if a teacher expects a gift, then pfffffffffthpsppssp on them.
38Thats so sweet atox. I heard one teacher on the radio last week complaining bc her students were doing what she called regifting Like the coffee mugs with candyand it wasnt good enough. She was pretty much saying it was prolly the parents doing bc they were cheap I was thinking what if her student regifted bc they thought shed like it way to make them feel good abou themselves I just hoped none of them heard her.
39Wow! I am so glad this post inspired you all to talk amongst yourselves! Happy holidays ladies. Love yas. xo
