Correct me if I'm wrong: January and February are the coldest of the cold months in lots of places. When I lived in New York City, I had to master the art of looking chic in the chill. Luckily, I had a roommate who had previously lived in Boston who showed me the ropes. I adore Emmanuelle Chriqui's outfit here. She looks cozy and casual, but still stylish with her stark white Snowjoggers and funky earrings. Whether you're in the chill or will be visiting the chill, these tips are guaranteed to prevent you from freezing your tooshie.
- Long Undershirts. I would wear long cotton, or silk, undershirts under my sweaters and tuck them into my pants. This blocks the evil Arctic wind from blowing up your clothes.
- Cashmere. It really is a cashmerical! If you can't afford 100% cashmere, some favorite more affordable brands like J.Crew and Old Navy have items with a cashmere blend. A little bit goes a long way!
- Keep your limbs cozy. In the Winter I have about three pairs of gloves floating around my entry way — one pair floating around my handbag. Scarves, hats and cashmere (again) socks are a must too. The feeling of being tucked in helps fight the chill.
- Fur. Whether it's the real deal or faux, the warm fuzziness of fur does a body good. I have two Marc by Marc Jacobs faux fur hoodie jackets that are my go-to cover ups for late night walks with Annabelle.
- Footwear. I had this morbid fear of slipping on ice while traipsing around Manhattan. When it was sIushy outside, I ditched my cute flats and heels for functional boots and clogs. Yes, clogs. I would wear them with cashmere socks and super cute coats and feel safe. I would then change into cuter shoes at the office.

1I have to say that I hate 100% cashmere items. They are such a hard upkeep and pill so much! Now cashmere blend items are more reasonable!

3Sorry no real fur over here, tisk tisk tisk.
4I layer with cotton shirts under cashmere and wool sweaters, wear cute berets/newsboy caps and scarves. I also found some really cute suede wedge boots at Macy's that are waterproof, have insulated lining and good soles so I can actually walk without worrying about slipping. I've had to tell people they are winter boots, they thought they were my typical fashion boots.
5i live in montreal, its crazy winters here...looking cute ouutside isnt an option sometimes but...luckily there are some cute styles to rock on frigid days...i like Uggs and tights with matching hat,scarf, and gloves...cozy and cute.

LOVE love that coat of Kate Hudson's. It's gorgeous. I really hate those boots of Emmanuelle's though. I think you can have cute boots AND stay warm at the same time..I mean, there are tonsssss of different boots out there!

10How can you wear those and still give tips about fashion and style. They are absolutely terrible. Uggs are uggly enough, but those are the worst shoes ever.
And there are so many nice warm boots out there, for instance from Timberland.
do people think those boots will be the next uggs?
11I find it easier to stay stylish in cold weather than really hot weather. You can wear more pieces of clothing all at once in winter (which means more ways to put an outfit together). Plus, you don't have to worry about unattractive sweat spots and hair in the wrong places.
Layering is key (I can't believe Fab didn't mention layering) - it's comfortable and can be done in a myriad of stylish ways. And it is possible to make it fab without using expensive things like cashmere and fur.
Make sure you have at least three layers.
The one closest to your body should wick away moisture so you're not clammy and uncomfortable. (I have long underwear made of some of that sport wicking material, and I've heard that wool and silk is good for this purpose, too. Cotton may trap the moisture in the material and make it so you have something that stays wet right next to you - not very comfortable. But it's okay to use cotton as the layer over the wicking layer because then it's not right next to you.)
The second layer should be some kind of insulation to keep your body heat from escaping into the cold. (Doesn't have to be cashmere. Most quilted or knit things would work. Fleece works too.)
The third should be some kind of windbreaker. (It doesn't have to be an actual windbreaker. I find that wool coats work, too. Anything made of some kind of dense material would do.)
And of course, keep the extremities warm with hats, scarves, gloves, and boots. Ah, so many different styles to chose from!
