Atonement costume designer Jacqueline Durran chose emerald green for Keira Knightley's character because to her, the hue symbolizes temptation. She certainly found the perfect color (which was a mixture of lime green silk, black and green organza, and green chiffon) because the dress is loved by nearly every girl who has seen the flick. Lucky for us, there's a look for less!

Faviana's Celebrity-Inspired Green Gown ($238) is nearly an identical copy of Keira's version. But unlike the actress' dress, it's not as low-cut, which is a good thing considering it would be hard to wear in real life. Should it sell out, visit Faviana's website for more info.

I saw this dress and wow, gorgeous!
And FYI the look for less appears as though it needs to be fitted better, up top it looks like a sack on her. Not flattering...
lol aimeeb, i just looked on the site and it says "Please note: top will be more fitted than appears in photo."
i think it's really nice but i didnt even spend that much on my prom dress so i dont think it will be hanging up in my closet any time in the future.
Hahahahaha well that's good to know. I was going to say, good lord who would pay for THAT??!!
So pretty!!!
That dress was amazing... too bad Keira isn't that shapely.. it could have looked a lot better.
hahaha the website says that?! that girl is really skinny though so she's probably really flat. that must be kind of embarrassing for her since the company drew attention to that.
it's so pretty. i woudl near be able to wear that. i envy natalie portman - she's the epitome of cool.
That color is amazing!
Love the color, and wish I could get away with wearing dresses like this sometimes. My 'girls' hold me back--but Keira pulls it off beautifully in the movie. Now if only we could get a "look for less" James McAvoy...
The dress Keira wore in the movie was gorgeous, the copy is stunning for us meer morals. Great for a formal affair.
Such a pretty color!
what designer was the one in the movie?
gal321 — the dress in the movie was created by costume designer Jacqueline Durran. xo.
i saw this movie because the dress looked awesome in the previews. dress was awesome...movie not so much. left me feeling inconclusive and wasted. c'est la vie
Um, the designer didn't "choose" green for this dress. The dress is green in the book, is vividly described by the author, and figures prominently in the entire description of the dinner party and the scene in the library. The costume designer just followed the book. It's the author who deserves the credit.
wow
what a dress!
The Atonement dress is so beautiful! Although I don't understand why Keira Knightley wore that particular dress, it just doesn't seem to fit her and having her wear it takes away the beauty of the dress. The look for less is nice too, but it seems to be a lighter shade of green than the Atonement dress.
If the look for less dress was the same color as the movie dress, I would be tempted to buy this. One reason the movie dress was so amazing was the great shade of green. The look for less dress's color is just blah.
Keira looks gorgeous in her dress! Old Hollywood glamorous!! The model in the other dress is...meh..
I haven't got round to seeing the film yet, but I assumed she was a wearing a green dress because in the book the dress is green. But the style of the dress keira is wearing is pretty much exactly as I imagined, and the colour of the second dress is exactly as I imagined.
I saw this dress in person at the Arclight movie theater by my house. It wasn't even behind glass....just on a mannequin behind a rope. It is STUNNING.
So true! I loved the dress
urgh the bottom dress is tacky
I love the dress. I wish the "knockoff" was the exact color of kiera's dress though!
Keira looked stunning.
I fell head over heals in love with the original dress when I first saw it, and since have been trying to find a suitable copy to wear to prom- but this doesn't really cut it for me. The color is way off from that gorgeous green, looks awfully shiny compared to original, and it doesn't fit to the shape like the gown from which it was inspired. Oh, and it's hella expensive for prom. Call me bitter and picky, but it is just fug.
Oh, I love that dress.
yeah same ... i'm so in love with this dress
this dress is absolutely gorgeous, i could barely keep my eyes off of it throughout the scenes it was in!
simply beautiful!
i love that dress it is pretty on keira and i could be pretty on me i love the movie becasue me and friend love that dress that she made out with robbie in it is pretty i wish i could own that. you go keira keep it up with the good fashion.
i own this dress! it's my prom dress and it was a little pricey but we got a good deal on it. I did get it taken up in the top though, because it did look like a sack haha. but once it was fitted it looked gorgeous. i love the dress, it's so different and it fit so well, and i have a hard time finding things that fit me...so i love it! i can't wait til prom so i can wear it. i can't pick it up until may third though, which makes me sad =[
what color shoes do you suggest i wear?
Keira's is gorgeous. The imitation one is a little too shiny but from what i have come to understand, the one in the movie got it's great texture and color because they had the silk dress made then, washed it to wear the shine out a bit. I'm not entirely sure if that rumor is true though.
i will be taking my girlfriend to prom in april and i was thinking of this dress!!!
I love this dress on the film and on kiera knightly, its stunning. This one is not so hot, the colour and the fabric look not so perfect. I've found a better version for cheaper
.
edressit.com do a far better copy in a better shade of green for $80 for $25 more they will custom make it for you as well. Theirs really does put this one to shame. x
The copy just doesn't have the same weight to it. The fabric that this dress was made in for the movie was half of the effect, and certainly not practical (they had about 10 different bodices and 4 skirts so that they could repair it whenever it ripped). I would honestly prefer to see this in a light, almost sheer jersey as a day dress in a different color than an apparent copy. An inspired evening dress with a similar cut and different color (two toned silk charmeuse?) would also be great.
The rouching on the back is also all wrong, but then again, the draped back makes even Keira look like she has some serious hips, so the copy does make it look better on more people! I also think that the loose bodice looks really great on a flat chest! Although, once again, the movie version's fabric was very clingy, so it shows shape better.
I think that I might have to custom order or make this myself when I get married.
i want i dress like this for my ball but i live in australia so i dont know how i would get it
