New York Fashion Week is a month away. To prepare, I'm going back to basics. For starters,
I'll be wearing all black, all month. I want to encourage you to go back to basics with me, so I've set out to find the best of the best in a few basic categories. Let's start with the perfect white shirt. Most of us have one in our wardrobe, but it's time for an update. Something classic, with an edge — an oversize bow, some lace, a puff shoulder, ruffles. Are you ready to get back to basics?
It's been a while since skirts have gotten the spotlight. Shine on pretty textured minis. Jennifer Connelly wore this futurama Balenciaga ensemb, along with a subtly shimmery face, to Letterman in NYC. Even though she isn't the brand's Spring campaign muse, she remains faithful to the house — it suits her so well. Though her colorful, varitextured miniskirt competes with her dove gray sandals for attention, my eye went straight for it. Whether ruched, tucked, pleated, fringed, or feathered, textured minis are funky, playful, and ready to wear.

Working on the Save Luella campaign, I came across this wonderful image (below) and discovered the fashion illustrator Derek Cardigan, who has a blog here: http://derekcardigan.blogspot.com/. He's obviously very talented, creating his images with hand drawing and then colouring them on Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Flash — ahh I wish I was spiffy with these computer programs! The man himself is very friendly and kindly let me ask him some questions.
"Well, I've always been drawing girls in dresses ever since I can remember. As a child, my favourite movie was (still is) Sleeping Beauty. I loved the end where she would be dancing in her pink dress which would magically turn blue. That made such an impact on me that I would draw princess Aurora while my fellow classmates (I went to an all boys private school) would draw cars. I always knew I was kinda special.

Fab favorite Matthew Williamson has joined the flock of designers taking it to the web. His collection and shopping site is up and running, sure to brighten your mood or make you crave a vacation. His vivid and exotic pieces are ready for viewing and buying. You can "become a friend" of Matthew Williamson and sign up to receive first looks at the latest collections and exclusive offers — I signed up; we're friends now. You can shop by look, which is fun, but at the end of the trip, my favorite thing is just sitting back and drowning in Williamson's whimsical world.

It's day two of our Paint It Black Fashion Challenge. Today, I was feeling a little sneaky, Bond style. Since it's all about noir, I decided to have some fun with textures via a sheer sweater and buckled vest. Gold jewels and a nude cuff complete my look, what do you think?
