8 Stylish Updates to Your Childhood Back-to-School Classics

Sep 7 2014 - 6:00am

We don't necessarily miss that feeling of having to go to school after a lazy Summer, but with our social media feeds being overtaken by first-day-of-school photos of our old classmates' kids (yes, you read that right: your old second-grade crush has a son in kindergarten), we have been getting a bit nostalgic for some aspects of the back-to-school season. Namely, all the hidden style moments we didn't appreciate back then. We didn't realize all the fashion statements — from bold backpacks to Velcro sneakers to doodle-heavy notebooks — we were making way back when.

We're taking a look back at eight classic items from the classroom and are giving each of them a modern update. That way, we can still rock a pencil case or a plaid pleated skirt without feeling a tad too elementary.

The Classic Backpack

The original: Who doesn't remember strapping on a brand-new backpack before taking the long walk to the bus stop on the first day of school?

The update: As happy we are at the resurgence of backpacks on the runways, we're sticking with a more elevated take on the carryall classic. Sure, bold pops of color still work, but for the office, we're tending toward neutrals. In lieu of plastic zippers and nylon fabrics, try those with drawstring or satchel closures and more luxe finishes, like leather and wool.

The Classic Skirt

The original: For those who spent their formative years wearing the same pleated plaid skirt five days a week, it's a school-uniform staple they might prefer be kept in the past.

The update: Sure, as adults, we may have tried out the sexy schoolgirl look at a Halloween [6] or two, but it is possible to make this style of skirt wearable the other 364 days of the year. And if more modern takes on pleating are still too difficult to endure, why not try the other school-inspired item: the pencil skirt.

The New Skirt

Carven Tartan Wool Pleat Mini Skirt [7] ($535)

The New Skirt

River Island Black Leather-Look Wrap Pencil Skirt [8] ($60)

The Classic Notebook

The original: It was fun to doodle and rip off notes to classmates, but gone are the days of wide-ruled, spiral-bound notebooks and Trapper Keepers to store our big ideas.

The update: The modern girl's pen and paper is completely digital. From laptops to iPads to iPhones, it's all about connecting to the cloud when inspiration strikes. To keep our far more expensive "notebooks" looking their best, sleek sleeves and cool cases are not only essential protectors, but also provide a personal touch only rivaled by Lisa Frank.

The New Notebook

Lanvin Alber Drawing Print iPhone Case [12] ($75)

The New Notebook

The Classic Sneakers

The original: Whether or not you had a hard time moving on from Velcro straps to big-kid laces, you wore sneakers just about every single day.

The update: Like backpacks, sneakers are one of the hottest fashion trends [17] of the moment, but aside from designer pairs, we're a bit nostalgic for the updated versions of our past go-to brands, like Keds [18], Vans, and Converses. We're also all about a good slip-on, when tying laces is a drag.

The New Sneakers

Vans Chambray Dots Shoes [19] ($55)

The New Sneakers

Soludos Lace-Up Colorblock Canvas Sneakers [20] ($55)

The New Sneakers

Keds Boyfriend Sahara Floral Shoes [21] ($80)

The New Sneakers

Toms Gray Space-Dyed Cordones [23] ($74)

The Classic Watch

The original: Telling time was a complicated skill made more burdensome with analog watches, but thankfully we had big, colorful, and often-plastic timepieces to keep us focused.

The update: It's true that most of us use our cell phones whenever we need to know if we're late for a meeting, but any good professional knows the cache that comes with having a watch on her wrist. From wraparound straps to bold floral faces, these grown-up versions will stand the test of time.

The New Watch

The New Watch

TokyoBay Obi Watch [25] ($110)

Olivia Burton Time of the Season Watch [27] ($110)

The New Watch

DKNY Black Leather Watch [28] ($85)

The Classic Pencil Case

The original: The social currency in elementary school wasn't in the form of lunch money: it was all about who had the most crayons. And those who had a primo set of markers and colored pencils likely had a pretty tubular case to store them all in.

The update: Although we don't fill our purses with Crayola much these days, we do have plenty of valuable items to stow away, and with the amount of options — from wallets and wristlets to clutches and minibags — out there, we're focusing on ones that provide multizipper organization or a clever look that gets the attention of everyone in the (class)room.

The New Pencil Case

Rebecca Minkoff Mini 5-Zip Clutch [29] ($130, originally $195)

The New Pencil Case

Diane von Furstenberg Tonda Printed Sequin Box Clutch [30] ($173, originally $345)

The New Pencil Case

The New Pencil Case

Miu Miu Textured Leather Wallet [33] ($595)

The Classic Romper

The original: If you didn't rock a romper or, at the very least, a pair of OshKosh overalls when you were at recess, have a serious phone call with your mother. The one-piece outfits made for easy dressing for kids who still hadn't yet honed their style sensibilities. And they looked plain adorable.

The update: Overalls have made a major comeback this Summer, and we plan to see them ride the back-to-school wave all through Fall. For a more sophisticated take, we're opting for long-sleeved rompers in feminine florals and classic, loose-fitting jumpsuits that can go from the office to adult recess . . . also known as cocktail hour.

The New Romper

Frame Denim Le High Skinny Overalls [34] ($299)

The New Romper

House of Harlow 1960 Huxley Khaki Overalls [35] ($128)

BCBG Floral-Print Romper [37] ($118)

The New Romper

Topshop Pocket-Front Overalls [38] ($90)

The Classic Glasses

The original: If you sported glasses as a kid, you might not have had much choice in the fit and style of your frames, nor in the nicknames you got, thanks to your prescription. Nothing like the oh-so-clever "hey, four-eyes!"

The update: Luckily, it's now hip, even hipster, to wear bold eyewear — so much so that people who don't have the need for glasses secretly have a pair stashed away. Instead of the kooky colors and patterns of our grade-school specs, we now prefer more neutral colors or just a bolder hue on the sides. If that sounds boring, fear not: there are still plenty of cool combinations, from cat eye to round and from stark black to ombré tortoiseshell.

Miu Miu Cat-Eye Optical Glasses [39] ($360)
