Condé Nast Editors Reportedly Banned From Working on Carine Roitfeld's Magazine

Editors and photographers at Condé Nast have reportedly been told they're not allowed to work on Carine Roitfeld's new biannual magazine, CR Fashion Book.

Editors and photographers at Condé Nast have reportedly been told they're not allowed to work on Carine Roitfeld's new biannual magazine, CR Fashion Book.

According to a few anonymous sources, Condé Nast International chairman Jonathan Newhouse has reminded Mario Testino, Craig McDean, Mert Alas, Marcus Piggot, and others who have exclusive contracts to shoot for Condé Nast titles that they legally can't work for Roitfeld. One source alleges that Newhouse has even gone so far as to strongly discourage other photographers who don't have the same contracts from working with the former Vogue Paris editor.

"Everyone is buzzing about the Condé roadblocks against Carine," one source said. "People love Carine but are more frightened of the Condé Nast machine."

Roitfeld has already culled two editors from the Condé Nast flock. Former Teen Vogue accessories editor Shiona Turini and former Vogue.it contributing fashion and market editor Michaela Dosamantes are both on the CR Fashion Book payroll.

Neither Condé Nast nor Fashion Media LLC, which operates CR Fashion Book — as well as V Magazine and V Man — has commented on the rumors. But Roitfeld said when she announced her new publication's name in April that she didn't want to challenge Vogue's dominance in any way.

"Vogue is a very beautiful magazine, an institution, and I learned so much working there," she said. "You can't put yourself into competition with a magazine like Vogue; you have to create something new, something different."

On the first leg of Karl Lagerfeld's traveling "The Little Black Jacket" tour — which features images from the book of the same name that the designer shot with Carine Roitfeld — the designer opened up about where Chanel's classic jacket belongs in fashion history.

"There are different cuts, shapes and proportions, but the basic thing is timeless," Lagerfeld explained. "There are not that many designer items you can say that about. We don't know who did the tank top; we don’t know who did the white shirt, but we know who did the little black jacket."

Lagerfeld says the book, which depicts everyone from Alexander Wang to Daphne Guinness (above) wearing the jacket, features some straightforward imagery and some in which the subjects take on different personas.

"I love the photo of Uma Thurman [resembling Marlene Dietrich], but she is not like this in life," he said. "We made Anja Rubik Japanese. She doesn't look like this either and is playing a part. The idea is the portrait of the personality, or the personality playing a part."

At the moment, one of Lagerfeld's favorite personalities is his oft-tweeted 9-month-old Siamese cat Choupette, who he admitted stealing from his male muse Baptiste Giabiconi.

"Baptiste gave her to me for Christmas to watch for two weeks when he was away but then I refused to give her back. I thought she was too cute," Lagerfeld said. She is like a kept woman. She has a strong personality. She has lunch and dinner with me on the table, with her own food. She doesn’t touch my food. She doesn't want to eat on the floor. She sleeps under a pillow and she even knows how to use an iPad. She has two personal maids, for both night and day. She is beyond spoiled."

But not spoiled enough to get her own little black jacket from Chanel. "I don't like animals in human clothes," Lagerfeld said. "I think that's very circuslike."

Below, a look at three preview clips for the exhibit, which opens in New York June 8. For a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the book, click here.

Cameras have been following Carine Roitfeld during the creation of her new magazine CR Fashion Book, and the footage will be turned into a documentary called Mademoiselle C.

Roitfeld has reportedly given director Fabien Constant "unprecedented access" to her entire life over the past few months, and he and his crew will continue filming right up until the first issue of CR Fashion Book debuts this September. The film doesn't have a release date yet, but it has already been characterized as "a lot of fun" and will include interviews with Tom Ford, Donatella Versace, and the endlessly quotable Karl Lagerfeld.

Constant and Roitfeld have worked together before — last year, he filmed her appointments during couture week to create a short film for W magazine.
