The Street Style Dispatch From Coachella and Beyond

Apr 19 2014 - 11:00am

People come to music festivals for a whole lot of reasons: the bands, the party scene, and, um, the fashion. With an eye to the main stage at Coachella (and appreciating a seriously good soundtrack in the background), we made sure to scope out all the amazing outfits around us. Whether you were there too or simply want a bit of inspiration for your own dressing [1] as the weather warms up, look no further. We've got crop tops, cutoffs, fringe, miniskirts, and more, all within.

Aimee Song skipped anything remotely messy, packing her polished pieces. In lieu of cutoffs, she wore lace-trimmed silk shorts plus a printed top and lace-up heels.

Festival Fashion

Baggy, cuffed overalls brought the tomboy vibe out west, but this reveler knew the key to keeping them sexy was by wearing over a tiny top (bikini counts!)

Festival Fashion

Even if you adore denim shorts as a music festival must, switch things up every now and then by picking a fun and festive number like this one.

Festival Fashion

Some of our favorite looks from the festival were supersimple, like this basic mix of leather jogging shorts and silky tank.

Festival Fashion

The romper feels anything but juvenile when done in a feminine fabric and interesting shape.

Festival Fashion

Cue our LWD obsession! Caroline de Maigret showed off one so effortlessly gorgeous, we had to restrain ourselves from heading to the mall, stat.

Festival Fashion

To let her bright dress take center stage, Jacey Duprie stuck to warm taupe for her bag and boots.

POPSUGAR editor Mandi Villa proved she's a pro at mixing prints, wearing a bold Aqua dress with a plaid baseball cap. For shoes? Ultracomfortable Converse.

Festival Fashion

We get just a touch of '90s sex bomb [3] from this crop top and high-waisted shorts pairing.

Festival Fashion

If you're confused what to wear with overalls, know you can never go wrong with a plain white tee. Camille Charrière did the basic look perfectly.

Festival Fashion

Did someone read our minds? We just realized how obsessed we are with white off-the-shoulder dresses [4], and then we spotted yet another one!

Festival Fashion

A crochet romper looks cool on its own: the lace-up boots take it a step further.

Festival Fashion

A pretty blue-and-white printed tank dress is reminiscent of that most essential of festival extras — a kerchief.

Festival Fashion

Even black and white, that most minimalist of color pairings, feels completely festival-friendly when they include a fringed crop top, short shorts, and high sandals.

Festival Fashion

When the temperatures hit highest in the middle of the day, it's all about wearing as little as possible. This super crop top is off the shoulder, too, which kept her cool along with her black-and-white shorts.

Festival Fashion

A drop-waist dress has a retro vibe that we love anywhere — same for the espadrilles, which are guaranteed to keep this partyer comfortable through the long hours of standing.

Festival Fashion

Bold spots of colors make this tank dress feel f-u-n.

Festival Fashion

A printed maxi, floppy hat, and tiny bra top are the perfect trio of festival fashion.

Festival Fashion

What to wear with knee-high lace-up flat sandals? Try a supershort shift so the statement shoes aren't hidden.

Festival Fashion

Ladies that love all black don't have to ditch it once festival time rolls around. This midcalf dress felt just as chic as any pair of cutoffs.

Festival Fashion

What to wear to a stylish pool party can be a tricky conundrum. Take a cue from this partyer and pair a plain black bikini top with silky shorts and a sweet cover-up.

Festival Fashion

A basic tee dressed down lace shorts, and the accessories, which included lace-up sneakers and a straw hat, helped, too.

Festival Fashion

A music festival is totally the time to pull out tie-dyed anything.

Festival Fashion

A ripped t-shirt feels cool, not messy, when it comes to festival time. We loved her on-trend Birkenstocks, too!

Festival Fashion

The most popular topper at a music festival? The breezy kimono-style jacket, sported by this bohemian concertgoer.

Festival Fashion

If boho isn't quite your thing, take a styling tip from Ashley Calandra and make your ladylike pieces festival-appropriate with a basic top and flat boots.

Festival Fashion

A bold print and extra-tall gladiator sandals were tamed by an everyday denim jacket.

Festival Fashion

Worn with high-waisted bottoms, a cropped tee only shows a sliver of skin. The scarf tied over her hair is practical, sure, but cute too.

Festival Fashion

Pieces that are tricky to wear in the real world are a must when it comes to festival fashion. Boldly printed flared pants are the biggest statement here, though we love the shape of her simple black tank.

Festival Fashion

Black high-waisted jeans and boots can work at a festival. Simply add a lightweight silk tank and long necklaces.

Festival Fashion

A lightweight fringed jacket is smart to keep sun off your shoulders while also adding a bit of intrigue to the overall look.

Festival Fashion

Muted colors in simple shapes, like this tank and shorts combo, can hold their own against the zanier looks you see at a festival.

Festival Fashion

Simple black with a lacy overlay was an easy pick to pull on for Samantha Wennerstrom.

Festival Fashion

Flirty and comfortable, Alicia Lund's silk Isabel Marant [5] dress was the sort of romantic piece that totally works for a day spent at Coachella. For your next evening out, postfest, simply switch out the Birkenstocks for a heel.

Festival Fashion

A printed dress with lots of swing is an outfit on its own and, happily, is easy to pull on and go.

Festival Fashion

A floral one-piece romper felt more grown-up, less grade school, thanks to short sleeves.

Festival Fashion

From the faded floral print of this One Teaspoon dress (available on Largo Drive [6]) to the wide-brimmed hat and bolo tie necklace, this combo had a prairie vibe that made perfect sense for a music festival.

Festival Fashion

City-cool leather has a place at Coachella, too! POPSUGAR Beauty Editor Lauren Levinson wore her Topshop [7] pair with an ivory silk tank and Frye [8] boots.

Festival Fashion

Make sure your neon really pops by pairing it with a neutral like black.

Festival Fashion

Langley Fox Hemingway shows how the downtown girl does a music festival: all black with high ankle boots.

Festival Fashion

Natalie Suarez skipped the micromini in favor of flared pants and a light tank. We loved how different it felt!

Festival Fashion

The beauty of laid-back music festivals is that an outfit that works as a poolside cover-up can last you all day! This simple linen dress, worn with ankle boots, feels at home next to the water, but will also fit in while catching a show later.

Festival Fashion

A skater skirt and bra top, along with flat sandals and a floral wreath, make for a comfortable look that was perfect for party hopping.

Festival Fashion

Tropical blooms feel natural in the desert during a music festival! This happy dress was topped with a sporty white baseball cap.

Festival Fashion

If you're wild about accessories, let them be your boldest pieces. A simple t-shirt and short combo allowed mirrored shades and a designer clutch to really pop.

Festival Fashion

Unless the day looks like it's going to be a long one, dressing up a silky romper with wedges makes total sense to us.

Festival Fashion

The best part of this ruffled halter dress was that it was custom-made for the wearer by a pal who happened to be handy with a sewing machine.

Festival Fashion

When you spy a roomy, superlight caftan like the one on Nikki Ogunnaike, it's easy to wish that music festival fashion could become the norm.

Festival Fashion

We remembered just how clutch the romper is all Spring and Summer when we spotted Samantha Wennerstrom in a faded denim number.

Festival Fashion

Flower power is never stronger than at Coachella! We love the boho-feminine look achieved by a bud-print maxi, a lacy white top, and a bold floral wreath.

Festival Fashion

Beat the heat like this music fan did in a tiny white top and high-waisted, billowy pants in a funky print.

Festival Fashion

If you have a signature color, stick with it — we love this bubblegum-pink set.

Festival Fashion

Alicia Lund took camo up a notch with a beaded extra on the breast pocket. And we applaud her smart layering: that shirt tied around the waist will come in handy when the sun goes down!

Festival Fashion

There was more than a hint of retro Palm Springs in the palm-frond-print skirt, bustier, and round sunglasses Jenny Bernheim picked for a party.

Festival Fashion

We love when comfort is chic, and there's nothing better than a jumpsuit for achieving that. We love the wide legs of this onesie and the soft daisy print.

Festival Fashion

Rock a crop top without exposing too much skin by picking a pair of high-waisted shorts. We love the comfortable Converse, too!

Festival Fashion

Designer Jennifer Zuccarini and Karen Wood chose smartly for the weather, picking lightweight looks and flat sandals.

Festival Fashion

One thing's for sure: this girl, in a printed silk jumpsuit with cutouts at the sides, was cool and comfortable. We love!

Festival Fashion

For official proof that cutoffs and crop tops aren't required at a music festival, look no further than Chrissy Rutherford's classy combo of an off-the-shoulder dress and heeled sandals.

Festival Fashion

You can always tell a true music-lover by her apparel. Case in point? This fan, who topped off high-waisted jean shorts with a cut-up band tee.

Festival Fashion

Runway or Coachella, athletic-inspired extras are making outfits! This concertgoer used bright yellow sneakers and a cap to finish off her brightly printed dress.

Festival Fashion

These festival friends dressed alike but different, with matching mirrored shades to boot.

Festival Fashion

Festivals are, more or less, the unofficial start of Summer fashion. Case in point? Jenny Wu, who picked light colors in crisp cotton.

Festival Fashion

For a spot of bright color, this music-lover added a turquoise bustier top to her cutoffs, Converse, and fanny pack trio.

Festival Fashion

Distressed cutoffs felt high-fashion thanks to mint-colored heels, a bold necklace, and a tank with the face of one very familiar Karl.

Festival Fashion

The girlie girl does festival fashion with a voluminous mini, a bra top, and some serious statement accessories.

Photo: Leah Melby

Festival Fashion

For a bit of extra warmth, Alicia Lund topped a silk romper with a wool, military-style vest.

Photo: Leah Melby

Festival Fashion

We're already obsessed with little white dresses, but topped off with a vintage-looking leather vest by Cynthia Vincent [9]? It's a whole new level.

Festival Fashion

The suit doesn't have to be stuffy. This Coachella fan's matching shorts and top were ready for fun.

Festival Fashion

You know it's springtime when white crochet comes out to play! Where a white tee would've worked, this stylish Coachella attendee went for something a little more special.

Festival Fashion

Simplicity works at Coachella too. This concertgoer tucked a plain white tank into her black maxi.

Festival Fashion

A simple color combo of black and gray feels extraspecial with a light kimono coverup.

Festival Fashion

Tie-dye feels more fashion-forward and less Summer camp when done in a clear pattern and horizontal stripes.

Festival Fashion

Kick-around Vans and denim shorts feel a touch sexy when worn with a lacy black top.
