DIY: Make a Blazer With Metallic Lapels (Video)

Hi. It's Allison McNamara and you're watching DIY on FabSugar TV. Today, we're taking our basic black blazer, a wardrobe essential, and giving it a fun makeover with shiny metallic lapels. Here's what you'll need: a black blazer, silver spray paint, silver fabric paint, sponge brushes, a small paper plate, painter's tape, and paper towels. The first thing is to tape off all the sections and make sure we only have our lapels exposed. Lay your blazer flat on the table, and then take two sheets of paper towels. Lay them underneath the lapels. Take your painter's tape, and then you're going to tape the paper towel to the section underneath the lapel. Take another piece of painter's tape. Fold it over to make it double sided. And then, put it underneath just so the lapel sticks down. and then repeat the same thing on the opposite side. So as you can see we've sectioned off and really protected this part of our jacket but we also need to protect the inside. So again, repeat the same steps. And the next we're going to do is use our fabric paint to act as a primer and really make the spray paint sparkle. So I've painted the front part of my lapels, but now I want to get to the back side. The great thing about fabric paint is it dries really fast, so wait about two to five minutes and you're ready to start spray painting. So with the spray paint there are a few things you need to know. First, hold it about six inches away, and next, go in really even strokes so it's nice and smooth the whole way around. You want to keep spraying until you're happy with the color, so I really like the color mine is right now. So what I'm going to do is take it outside, let it dry for about an hour and then bring it back in and take off all the tape. So now that all our lapels are completely dry, it's time to pull off the tape and the paper towels, slowly. It is looking so good. Okay, so I was so excited about this particular DIY that I had to try it on right away, and I love it. I can't wait to wear it out. Remember if you do this DIY, it's important to hand wash it --so you don't ruin your other clothes--by itself. I'm Allison McNamara.
