Azzedine Alaïa

Tunisian-born fashion designer, heyday in the 1980s. He briefly worked for Dior and Guy Laroche [1], and by the end of the 1960s had his own couture business on the Left Bank. Alaïa went on to produce the prototype for Yves Saint Laurent [2]'s famous Mondrian dress and also worked for Thierry Mugler [3]. In the 1980s, his own stretchy dresses and bodysuits came to define the Lycra revolution.

Alaïa was referenced in the mid-90's teen hit Clueless. When mugged at gunpoint, Alicia Silverstone's character protests to kneeling in a parking lot because she is wearing one of the famous clingy dresses designed by the "totally important designer."

Today, the Olsens [4] are huge Alaïa fans.
