Diane von Furstenberg Quotes From Google+ Hangout

DVF's Spirit Animal, Secret Pastime, and Other Trivia Her Google+ Hangout Taught Us!

Always an inspiration, Diane von Furstenberg was full of quotable gems during her Google+ Hangout moderated by Eva Chen. Last night's global event wasn't just an informative one, it was also historic and marked the first ever shoppable hangout. Featuring three vignettes styled by the legend herself, viewers could purchase the looks (with free shipping, no less) while listening to DVF's words of wisdom as she answered questions from the live panel of fans.

Among the looks, the Amelia dress was a definite standout. In celebration of the iconic wrap dress's upcoming 40th anniversary next year, von Furstenberg revealed a modern update on the classic T72 style. The woven-jersey-blend's A-line skirt would make dancing in your living room feel like a night at Studio 54. Curious to see the design (which features the same print as the label's first wrap)? Read on to see it, and discover seven surprising facts we learned about DVF!

  • The Prints Aren't Just Pretty, They're Functional, Too
  • Explaining why women feel comfortable in DVF's dresses, the designer explained: "The prints are flattering, because [they] always have movement. It moves with the fabric and makes the woman feel very feline. So, even when it's not an animal print, you always feel very . . . seductive in my clothes."

  • "A Good Thing Is Good Forever"
  • Much like the woman herself, who proved even Post-Paris Fashion Week jet lag was no match for her stamina, the wrap dress is a classic. Proof of that staying power: "No one has ever had a dress that has survived 40 years — it's never happened in history."

  • Speaking of Staying Power, Which Trend Would DVF Banish For Eternity?
  • "Big huge shoulders, I hate them — they make your neck look very short. God knows that I wore them, but I would not like them to come back."

  • After All These Years, She Still Gets Nervous
  • When asked if she has a good luck charm, von Furstenberg told viewers, "Every fashion show, because I am very nervous . . . I have a gold coin that belonged to my father that he had in the war when he was escaping from Belgium to Switzerland and I glue it on my shoe. "

  • If She Wasn't a Designer, She Would Be . . .
  • "A director or an architect. But my daughter is a director, so she took over . . . I like to make things happen, my granddaughter once said, 'What do you like about your job?' And I said, 'I like to have an idea and make it happen.'"

  • And If She Were an Animal, She Would Be . . .
  • "I would like to be either a leopard because they're very beautiful, or a bird because they're very free." (For the record, Chen would be a bumblebee.)

  • Animals Aren't All She Loves About Nature
  • "Nature really is a source of inspiration," she told Chen. "I always have my little camera, and I will see a bark of a tree, and I will take a snap. Before you know it, it becomes a print." Adding to the surprisingly earthy side of the designer, she reveals one thing that most people don't know about her: "I love to hike. I wear big, strong hiking boots."
