There are times when some manufacturers put "dry clean only" on something just because it's a no brainer. There's such a wide variety of washing machines and how people use washing machines that it can be problematic to list settings and so forth, manufacturers don't want to be liable for that, so they'd tend to err on the side of caution.At least this is why I think putting some of my "dry clean only" stuff in the machine worked out perfectly fine (I also use my own judgement on whether the item looks like the type of stuff that'd hold up fine in the machine, of course... I don't gamble this way with the stuff I seriously don't want to lose).Oh, and putting a dryer sheet, a wet (clean and not too moist) towel, and an item that needs to be dry cleaned in the dryer and let it whirl around for a while is a lazy way to steam clean some stuff. It's kind of like dryel, but less costly.But again, this stuff is always "try at your own risk". I don't spend a fortune on my clothes, so I'm not afraid to try.

I usually follow my mom's advice: everything is usually done in cold water, and "hand wash" items are done on a delicate cycle. I like Amanda G and bleached's ideas for drying clothes.

nope, i wash EVERYTHING together and always use cold water.my clothes, to many peoples' surprise, are in great shape still.

Right out of college I worked for Liz Claiborne. We pre-washed all fabrics in baby shampoo before construction. Now I wash everything that is dry clean only or special care in baby shampoo. It keeps fabrics soft and static free, smells nice, and is inexpensive. Then I lay flat on window screens that I bought from Habitat for Humanity that I lay across the width of the bath tub (no tub, use two chairs) and then steam out the wrinkles. Voila, perfect!

I don't buy clothes that have a lot of instructions. If they say hand wash I put them in the washer on the Delicate cycle and low heat in the dryer. They've always turned out just fine. I ignore most of that stuff and just wash it according to the fabric.

i wash pretty much everything on cold/cold on the delicate cycle. except dry clean only, obvi.

eu, I have a wire shoe rack (plastic covered - not just straight up metal) that I have converted into a rack for drying in my clothes. Works like a charm

A lot of my shirts are hand-wash which I don't do. I just put them in mesh bags in the washing machine and then air-dry them. I've never had a problem with it. I also always put my jeans in the dryer. Any shrinkage is temporary, and jeans get stretched out after you've been wearing them for awhile anyway. (at least mine do...)

I try to, the only exception is I sometimes wash linens and bedsheets at higher temperatures than the recommended 40, for health reasons. When it comes to clothes I have been pretty diligent and careful. I handwash cashmere and wool, bras always go into protective bags for washing, and jeans and favourite tops are always washed on 40, then taken out to hang-dry. One thing I do is if we are planning to use the sauna that night, I try to wash clothes that same evening, then put them into the sauna laid out on the wood to dry once we are out, rather than waste all that extra heat as it slowly cools back down to room temperature. It works brilliantly..if you are careful about how a shirt is laid out, its almost as good as ironing.
