Dolce & Gabbana to Present Test-Run Couture Collection

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana will dip their toes into couture when they present a small, custom collection in Taormina, Sicily on July 9.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana will dip their toes into couture when they present a small, custom collection in Taormina, Sicily on July 9. Most of the show's attendees will be clients, and reportedly only three unspecified media outlets — none of them American — are on the invitation list.

If rumors are to be believed, this presentation is a test that will allow Dolce & Gabbana to determine whether adding a Couture collection to its repertoire is a good business decision. A source inside the house said the designers had been interested in the "artistic challenge" of couture for some time.

Dolce & Gabbana's rival Italian fashion houses Versace and Armani will present their own couture collections in Paris on July 1 and July 3, respectively.

  • Speaking of Top Model, Tyra Banks let three of ANTM's long-running cast members go this week. Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel, and Miss J. Alexander will not return to the show's 19th season. They've been replaced by Kelly Cutrone, Georgina Chapman, and Cat Deeley. Rumor has it that Bryanboy might make appearances on the next season, too. [Modelinia]

  • Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have filed suit against the South African boutique Dolce & Banana, saying that the store's name "makes a mockery of the well-known trademark, Dolce & Gabbana." The store's owner has since changed her shop's name to " . . . & Banana," but the Italian fashion house is still trying to get her to pay its legal fees. [The Cut]
  • Instagram has a new rival in Trendabl, a new photo-sharing app for the iPhone that's focused specifically on the fashion set. Trendabl allows users to take pictures and put interesting filters over them, but users can also tag brands and specific products in the photo, which makes the experience shoppable. Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors, and Brad Goreski have already set up accounts. Will you? [The Fashion Spot]
  • Remember this day — the choker has officially made its return as a statement accessory. Look no further than the necks of women like Rihanna and Olivia Wilde (and the product assortments of Ralph Lauren, Dannijo, and Lanvin) for proof. [Stylelist]

  • What's more British than Agyness Deyn and Dr. Martens? Actually, a lot of things, but that didn't stop the model from collaborating with the shoe brand on a limited-edition capsule collection due out this Fall. "The brand is a great fit for me, as it stands for strong character and being able to shape your own personal identity," Deyn explained. [The Daily Telegraph]

  • Barneys now offers more than just clothes, shoes, and accessories. The retailer just opened up an art print pop-up store in its Chelsea Passage location. [Fashion ETC]

  • Jessica Biel is stunning on the April cover of W. Also stunning: her confession that she cut the heads off all her childhood Barbie dolls. "It looked demonic," the actress said. [Styleite]

  • Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana certainly love their pasta. Not only did their Spring 2012 show feature earrings made of the stuff, but for the April issue of Harper's Bazaar, the duo planned a big Italian dinner complete with spaghetti, pizza, and guests Pixie Geldof and Eva Herzigova. Terry Richardson photographed the festivities. [The Huffington Post]

For Fall 2012, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana decided to go for baroque.

For Fall 2012, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana decided to go for baroque. Taking inspiration from their native Sicily, the designing duo offered a religious-inspired experience of lace dresses, needlepoint florals, cherub-printed pieces, and tons of gold brocade. But of course the collection wouldn't be Italian without a little bit of peekaboo in the form of exposed bralets and a luxe dose of fur — this time via capes. To see the whole runway, watch the video now, and then read our full review.

    Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2012

If we had to describe Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2012 collection in one word, it would be opulent.
Dolce & Gabbana Runway Fall 2012

If we had to describe Dolce & Gabbana's Fall 2012 collection in one word, it would be opulent. Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have a knack for capturing the essence and unbridled spirit of the Italian woman, and for Fall they showed a luxe, Sicilian Baroque-inspired collection of lace, elaborate brocade embroidery, and sleek, sexy silhouettes. The show opened with stunning rose-covered chandeliers and sweeping floral arrangements to the music of authentic Italian opera — big names like Natasha Poly, Bianca Balti, and Joan Smalls graced the runway in delicate lace dresses with lavish gold embellishments, sweet, frothy frocks in layers of tulle, and ruffled bloomers that would make even Sophia Loren blush. The plunging necklines of Spring '12 were replaced with ladylike high ruffles and bow-ties, and although sheer lace was prevalent, most hemlines stayed well below the knee for a true sophisticated spin on la dolce vita. The bold needlepoint-style florals and cherubic mural prints will also be an editorial dream come Fall — we can already see stars like Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker getting shot in them. Get the complete breakdown below.

    • Trends: Lots of lace, floral motifs, cherub prints, brocade, layers of tulle.
    • Colors: Black, white, nude, gold.
    • Key Piece: The sheer lace dress with brocade cape, the gold-encrusted party dress with black veil.
    • Accessories: Bejeweled headbands, decadent drop earrings and statement necklaces, velvet evening bags, lace knee socks, carved wood heels.
    • Who Would Wear It: Risk-takers like Zoe Saldana, Anna Dello Russo, and Lana Del Rey, not to mention Dame Helen Mirren, who sat front row at the show.

    Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2012

    >> Going for Baroque.

    >> Going for Baroque. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's ode to Sicily for Fall 2012 was elaborate, romantic — and simply lovely to behold. On a runway dressed with giant chandeliers and an ornate gold frame, the designers sent out capes, dresses, and nipped-in coats — all in a palette of black, white, and gold — and each more decadently adorned than the last. There were black velvet capes decorated with gold filigree-style embroidery, frothy blouses trimmed with ruffles of sheer chiffon, and bell-shaped dresses printed with lush floral and cherub motifs.

Jennifer Lopez Inspires a Search For Pink Outerwear That's Not Cheesy

While most were staring at Jennifer Lopez's new arm candy, Casper Smart, as she walked down the streets of NYC, we were solely focused on one thing: her amazing pink Dolce & Gabbana coat! What's even more fabulous is that she buttoned it way up, almost making it look like a dress. Her equally stunning red Charlotte Olympia silk satin pumps (and KZENIYA clutch) further elevated the look and stayed current with the red-with-pink trend. With Valentine's Day around the corner, why not ditch the regular black outerwear and pick out a shade of sweet pink? While you may fear looking cheesy, let Jennifer inspire you to gain the fashion guts to take pink to a totally chic level. And the good news is that you can either dress up your pink outerwear with heels, or you can dress it down with blue denim and equally darling ballet flats.
