Fab Flash: French Fashion Industry Takes Anti-Anorexia Action

Yesterday, the French fashion industry joined with the country's Health Ministry to sign a charter promoting healthy body images in magazines and on the Paris runways.

The charter outlines a series of guidelines, committing the industry to work toward "a diversity of body representations" and refrain from using "images of people, in particular youth, that could contribute to promoting a model of extreme thinness."

This action follows the recent inquiry by the British Fashion Council on the effects of airbrushing, all spurred by the anorexia-related deaths of several South American models in 2006, including Brazilian Ana Carolina Reston.

I am 5'8" and weigh 117lbs. I eat normal meals and healthful meals. I have curves.And I know I look good. I am naturally thin. With a great metabolism. Honestly - its great - I am lucky in the gene pool. My sister is completely different - great body but gains weight easily and is 5'2". You cannot make a law says this height should be this weight. There are so many factors in weight. Each person knows when they feel healthy and when they dont. For example, when I am sick with the flu or something where I can't eat and then lose weight and drop to maybe 114, I don't feel good physically. I feel nauseous and cannot eat much. Obviously - not a good weight for me. As little as 3 lbs can make a difference. Just be healthy for your own body.

This needs to be a universal thing. Little girls shouldn't grow up thinking you have to be that thin to be beautiful.

I agree with you anaid. They say they will do things but nothing changes. The models are still unbelievable skinny.

I think they should put a ban on models who do not look healthy like those that are 5'9 and weigh 110 pounds. It's just not right however at the same time I think there should also be a law against people who are promoting obesity like McDonald's. It' s just not right either. Both are an epidemic and should be treated no different than the other

hmmm... I don't believe it. They always say that yet nothing changes (just look at what happened recently to model Ali Michael).I think the industry by now has an irremediable hipocrisy.

Being thin doesn't mean there's something wrong with you. Have a 5'9" friend who also has very small bones, and eats (though she's a runner) who's 6 months pregnant and just now hit 135lbs. I'm 5'7" and 106lbs currently. Until the past couple of years I was anywhere from 99-103lbs any time I bothered to get on a scale. I also out-ate my 6'3" 230lbs ex-husband, eat 5 meals a day when it's cold out, won't touch food with 'low fat' or 'diet' in the name, and don't do any exercise for it's own sake. Will run around after kids or the dog, but I loathe the whole idea of gyms or treadmills. And I'm not a twig, I've got boobs and hips. As every doc I've had has said, some of us just have really small bones. That aside, I'd love to see a diversity of shapes for models. Many on the runway these days look completely unhealthy, not naturally slim as was more common 10 years ago. If you can count the ribs attached to the sternum, there is a problem! And some hips would be nice... models were far more attractive when they were built like women, with curves (not fat, and not boy hips with plastic boobs, but actual curves).

o i would say the models are less than 100 lbs! i mean my mom is 5'9 and 105 and yes she is quite thin but i mean the models are clearly thinner. and i'm 5'10 and 117 lbs and i'd look huge standing next to the models! they have twigs for legs and i clearly don't lol

It's about time! Let me just say that I am 5'9" and my weight falls between 125-130 pounds and I am skinny but still healthy. I honestly can't fathom anyone being 5'9" and weighing any less than I do because that's just wayyyyy too thin...tall people NEED to weigh more and weighing 100 lbs. at 5'9" there is def. something wrong with you!

As long as "diversity" doesn't mean some models weigh 95 lbs and some weigh 100, this is a good sign! Now how long is it going to take NYC to at least try to make some changes...?
