The famous artist, who once illustrated Nina Garcia's The Little Black Book of Style, has now done it again for the deluxe editions of three classic novels: Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen ($11), Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte ($11), and The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne ($11). i dunno, i like it, but i dont really like it for the books, i mean personally i think classics should keep a classic feel, so that the reader knows what to imagine in their mind, rather than being confused by the modern covers and the juxtaposing classical stories, it just doesnt make a whole lot of cohesive sense to me.
1you know; in one sense I agree with cherryblossom that I prefer classics to have a classic feel and classic style illustration; but at the same time I kind of love the very modern, cartoonish; almost humourous take on the bleak seriousness of these novels...
2I am a huge fan of Ruben Toledo's work. I have a few past Nordstrom catalog covers pinned to my inspirational art wall. Love all three covers.
3I agree, cherryblossom, I think classic books should keep a “classic cover“. But I like these covers.
4I happened upon Wuthering Heights in my local bookstore and fell in love with the cover design. Without it jumping off the shelf at me I would've looked the other way and never chanced upon a wonderful classic read. And to see the other two covers I've been trying to find (P&P being one of my go to reads)- I can't wait to snatch them up on Amazon!
