The Top Trends From New York Fashion Week

Feb 20 2012 - 4:44pm

We've spent the better part of the last week (OK, the whole part of the last week) absorbing the trends from the Fall 2012 runway shows at New York Fashion Week. Major American designers including Jason Wu [1], Joseph Altuzarra [2], and Zac Posen [3] injected an exotic global vibe to Fall, while the runways at Rag & Bone and Marc Jacobs [4] showed us two new perspectives on layering that happened to be completely different. We saw the rise of orange, the dominance of red leather, and the return of wide belts (better to create those hourglass figures, my dear). If you're looking for the top trends of New York Fashion Week, you've come to the right place. Click to see our complete roundup of New York Fashion Week's top trends.

Winter White

The monochromatic look is a fresh answer to the usual all-black. Just stay away from ketchup and red wine.

Architectural

Fall 2012 shows a focus on clean lines and structured silhouettes, not unlike the lines of a Frank Gehry building. Look for sharp edges and detailing.

Red Leather

Leather was all over the runways, but we were struck by the dominance of red leather. It's taken a much more sophisticated turn.

The Short End

We saw a plethora of ultra-cropped jackets and vests on the runways, often layered for textural outfits that were ultra cool.

It's a universally flattering silhouette that automatically makes your figure go hourglass, plus it's a wonderfully feminine detail.

New Nomad

The runways were filled with layered looks that suggested a rugged, nomadic sensibility. So what if we want to wear it on city streets?

Fur dominated the runways, and whether you are a fan of it or not, it seems to be getting lots of attention from designers. This season, look for it in new colors, as trim on jackets, and in more minimalist shapes.

Accessory Trends: Bigger Belts

It might be the only thing we want in a bigger size: our belts for Fall. The wide-cinched looks works wonders for creating an hourglass figure.

If there's one skirt silhouette you try for Fall, it should be a wrap skirt. We love the little bit of leg it shows and the sculptural feel.
