The Fashion Industry Gains Another Power Couple

Nov 13 2013 - 10:50am

Sean Avery and Hilary Rhoda's engagement [1] is good news for them, but even better news for all of us who love a good fashion couple! After all, fashion is a labor of love, and that couldn't be truer for the scads of romantic pairings in the industry.

While many of the most-watched couples in fashion, like Proenza Schouler [2]'s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, work together, others simply share an affinity for creating beautiful clothing, objects, or images. With this handsome couple's pending nuptials, there's no better time than now to take in the love stories of Ruben and Isabel Toledo, Anja Rubik and Sasha Knezevic, and more of the coolest couples in the business.

Sean Avery and Hilary Rhoda

No wonder this pair looks so stylish in their clothes: Sean's a former NHL star with the muscles to show for it, and Hilary's in top shape as she preps [3] for tonight's Victoria Secret runway show [4]. The two — who met in 2010 — share more than just killer physiques. His mutual love of fashion landed him a highly coveted and much-buzzed-about internship at Vogue in 2008.

Richard Buckley and Tom Ford

Tom Ford [5] was a 25-year-old fashion assistant when he was dispatched to the offices of WWD to pick up samples. He rode the elevator with then-38-year-old Richard Buckley, who was the paper's fashion editor at the time. "I decided in that elevator ride that I was going to marry him," Ford told [6] Out Magazine. The two have been together for over 25 years and had a son [7] named Alexander in 2012.

Jeff Halmos and Lisa Mayock

Jeff Halmos, half of Shipley & Halmos [8], and Lisa Mayock, half of Vena Cava [9], got married in Summer 2012. "I feel incredibly lucky to have found someone that I can talk to about all aspects of my life — that's such a unique connection," Mayock said [10].

Nicole Colovos and Michael Colovos

Nicole and Michael Colovos founded the denim brand Habitual in 2001 and moved to New York in 2006 to take the reins [11] at Helmut Lang. The couple has three sons.

Julia Restoin Roitfeld and Robert Konjic

The models met each other through friends in 2006 and welcomed [12] a daughter named Romy Nicole Konjic in May 2012.

Zac Posen and Christopher Niquet

Designer Zac Posen [13] and stylist Christopher Niquet have been an item since 2008. The couple shares an apartment in New York's SoHo neighborhood with three dogs.

Isabel Marant and Jérôme Dreyfuss

Designer Isabel Marant [14] and her husband, accessories designer Jérôme Dreyfuss, had a son named Tal in 2003, and their stores in Paris are just steps away from each other.

Scott Schuman and Garance Doré

The photographers, who now live together in New York, met years ago during Paris Fashion Week. "I would look at her blog, see the pictures, and I could tell she had the eye," Scott Schuman told [15] The New York Times. "If she had the right equipment, she could be a great photographer." So Schuman gave Garance Doré his backup camera, and their relationship bloomed from there.

Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough

These two fashion-school sweethearts have come a long way since graduating from Parsons in 2002. For over a decade, their brand has been one of the most watched in the industry, and so has their relationship. Last year, the couple bought [16] a 100-acre farm in Western Massachusetts, where they reportedly spend three weekends every month.

Jenna Lyons and Courtney Crangi

"It certainly is strange to wake up, at 44, and look at the person next to you and think: 'Oh! This wasn't what I expected,'" said [17] J.Crew Creative Director Jenna Lyons of her relationship with jewelry executive Courtney Crangi. "But I don't think love works that way, and I am OK with that."

Claude Morais and Brian Wolk

The designers behind Ruffian met [18] in New York during a Proust reading at the National Arts Club.

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin

The couple responsible for some of the most iconic campaigns and editorials in the business have been together for more than a quarter of a century. They have a 9-year-old son named Charles and, of course, a collaborative working relationship. "It’s great," van Lamsweerde told [19] Style.com. "We look at each other's [cameras] and we can say, 'Oh, that’s better. Let's go in that direction.'"

Patrick Robinson and Virginia Smith

Patrick Robinson was working as the head designer at Anne Klein [20] when he met Virginia Smith, who at the time was the brand's head of public relations. Robinson went on to design for Gap, and Smith is now the fashion market and accessories director at Vogue. They have a son named Wyeth [21].

Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan

Friends set Jonathan Adler [22], the pottery, furniture, and handbag [23] designer who has collaborated with Lacoste [24], and Simon Doonan up on a blind date in 1994, and they got married in 2008.

"We have a ridiculous amount in common," Doonan said [25] in their New York Times wedding [26] announcement. "We both hate smug people. We both rant at the same things. We both drink a lot of tea."

Natalia Vodianova and Antoine Arnault

Model Natalia Vodianova divorced her husband Justin Portman in 2010. In June 2011, when a reporter asked her if she was in love with a new man, she said [27], "Yes, definitely." Two months later, news spread that Vodianova was talking about Antoine Arnault, son of Dior owner Bernard Arnault and managing director of the LVMH brand Berluti.

Frida Giannini and Patrizio di Marco

Frida Giannini and Patrizio di Marco got involved shortly after he was appointed the brand's CEO in 2009. The two announced in November 2012 that they're expecting [28] their first child.

Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra

They met in 1994 after being introduced by a mutual friend at New York's Sound Factory. "Yes, of course, it was love at first sight," Robert Tagliapietra said [30]. "We became an old couple within months."

Cathy Horyn and Art Ortenberg

The New York Times's fashion critic has been dating the Liz Claiborne cofounder since 2009. And Art Ortenberg stands by his lady: when Lady Gaga [31] took Oscar de la Renta [32]'s side in the hot dogs and hamburgers feud [33], Cathy Horyn's boyfriend told [34] the singer to "grow up."

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham

The Beckhams met in 1997 at a charity soccer game and married two years later. Since then, their family — and their fashion empires — have grown. David has an underwear line with H&M [35], Victoria has her women's collection [36], and their son Romeo (one of the couple's four children) recently starred in Burberry's Spring 2013 campaign [37].

Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli

Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli met at a Milan trade show in 1997; today, she runs the creative end of her namesake brand, and he runs the business side. "It's always an intense relationship, and it's exhausting having to work with him," Prada said [38] in an interview with WSJ Magazine. "But I admire and respect him."

Isabel Toledo and Ruben Toledo

Ruben Toledo told [39] Harper's Bazaar that he fell in "love at first sight" with Isabel Toledo when he was 13 and spotted the future designer in their Spanish class. Isabel didn't fall that fast: "I fell in love with Ruben's art before I fell in love with him," she said.

Michael Kors and Lance LePere

Michael Kors [40] met Lance LePere in 1990 when he joined the Michael Kors team as an intern. But they didn't fall in love until they were working in Paris, where Kors served as creative director of Céline from 1999 to 2004.

"We share a certain level of taste, an American point of view, and I think we like to play with Americana," LePere told [41] New York Magazine in 2010. "Over the years and the day-to-day process of dreaming together, things just naturally fell into place."

Filip Arickx and An Vandevorst

This designing duo met on their first day of school at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1987. They launched A.F. Vandevorst in 1998 and added shoes in 2003 and lingerie three years later.

Sachin Ahluwalia and Babi Ahluwalia

The designers behind the brand Sachin and Babi both moved from India to New York to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where they met in their second semester. "I always knew this was the girl for me," Sachin Ahluwalia said [42]. "My first muslin that I ever made, I draped it on her."

Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro

Suzanne Clements, who's British, was on her home turf when she met Brazilian-born Inacio Ribiero at Central Saint Martins. They were appointed creative directors at Cacharel [43] in 2000, but left in 2007 to revive their own brand.

Lubov Azria and Max Azria

This designing couple met when Max Azria was interviewing Lubov for an associate designer job at BCBG. He proposed marriage on their first date, but she said no. They eventually did marry in 1992 and had three children together. "I look at Max and feel like I've been married to him for hundreds of years," Lubov told [45] Harper's Bazaar. "Everything fits."

Anja Rubik and Sasha Knezevic

The models met on a photo shoot, and their first date was in New York's Central Park. The two got married [46] on the Spanish island of Majorca in July 2011.
