What happens when a designer known for making feminine clothing borrows from the boys? For Fall 2013, Giambattista Valli fused his womanly aesthetic with sporty menswear staples like parkas, sweatshirts, and sneakers.
But an ode to androgyny this was not. The first few looks down the runway, mostly white and cream, combined garments like a safari vest with a chiffon cocktail dress, or paired a skirt in the floaty material with a crisp white shirt and an overcoat with a fur-lined hood. That dichotomy played out through the rest of the show, with Valli eventually succumbing to his penchant for glamorous women's clothing. A suit in a floral print was paired with a shirt whose ruffles spilled out of the blazer, and the last few looks served up the kind of sparkly red-carpet glamour Valli is known for.
Continuing in the vein of his previous collection, Giambattista Valli's Fall '13 lineup marched again to a sportier, more modern beat — albeit with the same extraordinary details that have made his designs a favorite among celebrities like Diane Kruger and Olivia Palermo. Crafted in a messy-meets-modernist black-and-white finish, Kruger's leg-baring Giambattista Valli look caught our attention and kept it there. Rest assured, the blond beauty kept everything else minimal, pairing the look with a slicked-back bun, Neil Lane cluster earrings, a gold-and-black clutch, a Jaeger-LeCoultre diamond-encrusted watch, and crisp white Christian Louboutin pointy-toe pumps. Couture Fashion Week is about pulling out all of the over-the-top, decadent, head-turning stops. Last night's SAG Awards didn't disappoint in any of the above categories, as we witnessed a bevy of A-list actresses dressed to the nines. With that said, there were a select few that got to wear extraspecial dresses — the kind straight off the runway. With only weeks since the Pre-Fall '13 lineups debuted, and literally just days since the Spring '13 Couture shows, designers were more than eager to offer up their beautiful gowns for celebrities to wear on the red carpet last evening. We're talking about Jennifer Lawrence's stunning navy Christian Dior Haute Couture gown, Anne Hathaway's sheer Giambattista Valli — both gowns made their debut on the runway less than a week ago — and Amanda Seyfried's Pre-Fall Zac Posen mermaid confection. Giambattista Valli turned a fresh eye to modernist design with his Spring 2013 Couture collection. His fourth couture outing — staged at the Italian Embassy in Paris — featured restrained animal prints, wasp-waisted dresses and coats, and floral embellishments that were actually created from feathers.

The brunette beauty paired her ladylike number with patent Rupert Sanderson pumps, a mirrored Judith Leiber clutch, and a stunning Graziela cocktail ring ($2,660), then completed her streamlined look with an effortless updo and au natural makeup. It was a big night for the young starlet, who accepted her Independent Spirit honor alongside some of the most powerful ladies in the industry. A distinctly minimalist bend gave Giambattista Valli's Spring 2013 collection a cleaner, more refined edge than clothing he's shown in past seasons — but his signature flair for decoration was still very present. Take, for example, the simple sheer white shift dress decorated with beaded vines and rectangular white flower petals, or the lace applied to a red cocktail dress. None of these embellishments looked heavy. In fact, they appeared light as air, and so did Valli's sharply tailored suiting and a variety of garments in a tweed-like gold fabric dotted with round rhinestones. This collection was pretty, and also pretty cleaned up.
