78 Fabulous Snaps of Giorgio Armani in Honor of His 78th Birthday

"I love things that age well — things that don't date, that stand the test of time, and that become living examples of the absolute best," Giorgio Armani has said.

"I love things that age well — things that don't date, that stand the test of time, and that become living examples of the absolute best," Giorgio Armani has said. At age 78, with his trim figure, tanned skin, and jet-set lifestyle, the visionary designer seems to embody that philosophy to a T — a supersleek black one knit from the finest cotton, of course.

Whether aboard his $60 million yacht or entertaining friends at one of his nine homes or kicking back on his private island in the Ionian Sea, Armani knows a thing or two about maintaining the good life — and he should. Since launching his eponymous line in 1975, Armani has worked tirelessly to become Italy's most successful and iconic designer. His first year in business he made just $14,000; in 2012 the Armani empire — which includes ready-to-wear, couture, accessories, menswear, beauty, home goods, and a chain of hotels — is worth an estimated $7.2 billion.

In honor of our favorite sneaker-wearing, Mercedes-driving, beach-lounging designer's July 11 birthday, here are 78 fabulous snaps that are almost as fabulous as Armani himself.

Armani Privé Fall 2012

Armani Prive Fall 2012 Collection

Giorgio Armani's Fall 2012 Couture collection for Armani Privé was inspired by beauty found in the everyday: the sun rising in the morning and setting in the afternoon, the sky yielding to constellations of stars at night. That message was grounded in clothing colored to resemble the sky at various times of day: sunrise pinks, oranges, dusky purples, and midnight blues were featured prominently on colorblocked shirts, subtle ombre jackets, and cardigans with sheer sleeves — many of which were paired with Armani's signature full-cut trousers in black. By the time the show had progressed to evening, the looks looked more like night, too. Futuristic dresses (one asymmetrical gown featured a spike of fabric that veered off over the left shoulder) embroidered with crystals or affixed with sequins dominated the latter half of the collection and were shown on models wearing sheer, beaded veils that called to mind shooting stars and meteor showers. With those, Armani said he was trying to create an air of mystery, but they also added a textural layer of beauty to a show already infused with plenty of sparkle and glamour.

Bruce Weber cast model Simon Nessman in a short film called Wet and Wild, created for Giorgio Armani's new fragrance, Acqua di Giò Essenza. Inspiration for both the scent and the short come from the Italian island of Pantelleria, where Armani has a home. "The idea was to capture, in my own way, that Mediterranean feel," said Weber. "The connection to water, the sea, and bodily freedom on a beach." Accordingly, Weber's camera followed Nessman as he swam in the ocean and roamed around a Miami beach wearing a pair of black Armani swimming trunks. A look at the film — which debuted today on Nowness — below.

More Details Emerge About the Future of Armani

An Italian newswire report suggesting that Giorgio Armani will form a foundation to run his fashion empire after he dies set the press ablaze with speculation that the future of the fashion label has been set in stone.

An Italian newswire report suggesting that Giorgio Armani will form a foundation to run his fashion empire after he dies set the press ablaze with speculation that the future of the fashion label has been set in stone.

However, an Armani spokeswoman said today that the report, published by Ansa last week, was incorrect. Instead, the spokeswoman said, Armani, 77, would consider selling his company to a large fashion conglomerate only if he's presented with a good enough offer. And, while he is also considering leaving the brand to a foundation, Armani told WWD last week that it is "only one of the possibilities."

Armani's succession plan has been in focus lately because of a recent WSJ. Magazine profile that explores what will happen to the company after the designer is gone. In the profile, Armani admitted that he hasn't settled on a plan, saying, "As long as I'm here, I'm the boss."

Giorgio Armani on His Health and Possible Successors

Giorgio Armani says his drive to stay healthy actually threatened his life, at one point sending him to the hospital for a 10-day stay.

Giorgio Armani says his drive to stay healthy actually threatened his life, at one point sending him to the hospital for a 10-day stay.

Armani told WSJ. Magazine that he had to be treated for "a very serious" case of hepatitis in May 2009. The cause was attributed to an unspecified collection of supplements the 78-year-old took before going to the gym every day. "My doctor told me: Get rid of all this sh*t you're drinking," he said.

While Armani wouldn't disclose exactly which substances he was taking, the Journal did suggest one possible motive for taking the supplements. "The house Armani has built is a reflection of himself — the trim, toned, tanned and t-shirted figure that is synonymous with the brand — and he wants to secure a long life for both."

Today, Armani is one of very few designers who owns 100 percent of his own company, where he serves as both creative director and CEO. His position as the man responsible for every aspect of the house's business begs the question as to who will run Armani when he's gone — and the designer says it will probably fall to his two nieces and his nephew. "Look, this succession issue has been at my throat for at least 15 years," he said. "The question is always the same, and so is the answer: as long as I'm here, I'm the boss."

"I am proud to stand alongside Sean Penn, a man cut from a very rare cloth," Armani said. "It is an honor to be a part of Sean's remarkable life of service by joining his humanitarian efforts for the people of Haiti."

In the past, Armani has supported charities like UNICEF, amfAR, and the Global Fund. In 2002, he was named a Goodwill Ambassador for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees.
