Heidi Klum doesn't seem like the type to back down from a fight, so it was news to us when we heard the Project Runway host discontinued her QVC jewelry line after being hit with a lawsuit from Van Cleef & Arpels accusing her of copying their trademark clover design. "They wanted to have the clover, even though our designs never matched . . . they just wanted to own the clover motif," said Klum. "So they went after everyone who does that — Louis Vuitton! -— they said 'We own the clover . . ." Interesting. Take a look at Klum's jewels and tell me, does discontinuing her jewelry line admit guilt?
Probably both-
1As a lawyer myself, I don't think it admits guilt at all. It could just be that her jewelry line wasn't profitable enough to where she would be justified in spending the amount of money necessary to defend the lawsuit.
2Hello! The Alhambra Van Cleef line is classic! I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner.
3I liked her clover line. For Van Cleef to say they own the clover would be like someone saying they own the "cross" symbol. It's just too universal of a symbol to be owned by one company.
4Own the clover design? that's ridiculous, are they going to sue my lawn next for having "clover" in it?
5How can anyone "own" a basic shape? It boggles the mind...
6YES!
7They must own it, hence her not willing to risk legal entanglement.
8Own a basic shape? That's not a basic shape...that's a blatent rip-off! It's a symbol of Van Cleef, much like that particular flower on the LV logo makes it LV. I'm surprised she made it this far without a lawsuit!
9while im aware that the alahambra design from van cleef is classic, i dont think its logical for ANYONE to own a shape, thats stupid, just because shes selling something to people who probably cant afford to buy van cleefs doesnt mean no one will buy their jewelery, i mean its a completely different price bracket and people are insane.
10I own this square talk-bubble shape. You all owe me.
11haha - littlekaren!
I am copywriting/trademarking the letter "e". Any use of the letter "e" whether alone or in combination with other letters, or in the capital "E" form is permitted without written consent from me!
Man there's a lot of money to be had from "owning" a universal symbol.
